There's also apparently been a drought in Taiwan affecting things too.
Since it's Taiwan it's probably just some Sagat who's holding things up.Drought, or intentional suppression of regional atmospheric patterns by the CCP's weather-control machines in order to punish the world for making all of those Xi Jinping Pooh memes?
I read that Apple have bought up a TON of (expensive) manufacturing time over at TSMC(and probably Foxconn for assembly) to avoid iPhone/Mac shortages. It might be more than they actually have use for just in case things production slows down, demand is greater than expected or things gets messed up somehow. So in addition to a possible wafer shortage there could be a manufacturing shortage if enough companies are hedging their bets and overbook.I'd just like to interject that it's not only GPUs and CPUs that are in short supply now. The scalpers are the least of the problem. Shit like networking gear is starting to get hard to come by, with DRAM and NAND parts coming next. Wonder if phone manufacturers are starting to feel the heat
Yeah but that's only one fab. Do all automotive manufacturers get their chips from TSMC? How about network gear? Broadcom? Qualcomm (ok yeah they might)? Mediatek? IOT chips? Texas Instruments? Espressif?I read that Apple have bought up a TON of (expensive) manufacturing time over at TSMC(and probably Foxconn for assembly) to avoid iPhone/Mac shortages. I really don't know how any of that works but it makes sense to me in a way, it's similar to how some people bought some extra toilet paper last year and that turned into a panicked TP mania where people grabbed as much as they could.
I meant that one things could be made worse by another thing.Yeah but that's only one fab. Do all automotive manufacturers get their chips from TSMC? How about network gear? Broadcom? Qualcomm (ok yeah they might)? Mediatek? IOT chips? Texas Instruments? Espressif?
Apple took up all of 5nm, AMD is on 7nm and Intel is leeching off of 7nm their Xe GPUs for some supercomputer. nVidia got fucked by this and is on Samsung, yet they can't make enough as well.
Hence the question - did we run out of sand or something? Cause the last time I was in the know, the actual wafers were in short supply, not fab capacity per se (excluding TSMC)
This is great, where did you find it?I meant that one things could be made worse by another thing.
Disclosed companies that outsource stuff to TSMC and the companies that buys the things they produce:
Qualcomm, largest customer Apple.
Broadcom, largest customer Apple.
Texas Instruments, largest customer Apple.
STM, largest customer Apple.
(not shown) Apple, largest customer Apple.

I'm not saying that Apple is the reason for all this, they just popped out when I looked at this 2021 chip shortage graphic. If they're calling dibs on a lot of the production capacity then it wouldn't make a wafer shortage during a pandemic better.
Bloomberg, 29th of March 2021, so it's pretty recent. This is great, where did you find it?
