A 501(c) is a nonprofit. A 501(c)(3) is a subclass of nonprofit that is subject to additional restrictions and benefits. If an organization is a 501(c)(3) due to being a charity, one such restriction is the earlier mentioned requirement to donate a certain percentage of their money on hand per year.
