The Critic

You ever see the webseries? Even that's pretty ancient at this point, circa 2000 or so.

It was, uh, not good.
Thats what im saying. It wasnt proper, what im saying is like a real third season with Alice, Jay’s parents, maybe his son is older and Duke’s nephew or wife have taken over because those VAs have passed away and for the most part it’s the same thing as before but with maybe more satire on other critics being obviously paid off

The problem is you run the risk of it being really stupid in an attempt to be topical. “Jay meets Jordan Peele” and “Jay Defends Ghostchasers Reboot from Toxic Masculinity” would be the logical worst scenario

I think it could work without some of the original voice actors. Replace Duke with a Mark Zuckerberg or Elon Musk type would work. Age his son a little bit. Doris could be replaced. The real problem would be getting the right writers because it could very easily just become a Family Guy knockoff with the cutaways and movie parodies. A big part of the joy of the show was the fact that it skewered Hollywood:

Can Hollywood laugh at itself nowadays? Most likely not.

I can definitely see Jay defending Lady Ghostbusters until he sees it and realizes its all queef jokes and shameless product placement.

Jay is definitely like an establishment Democrat voter lmao. His family are old money WASPs so he’s got that raired into him. But he’s got principles to not talk up shit products and that’d certainly be the conflict if it was written well. It’d be like an update of the pilot premise. Does he risk his integrity to be well liked or does he risk his already shakey reputation just for the sake of saying it loud about a shitty movie no one will remember beyond controversy?

Are you really sure you want to live in a world where you hear people say that the Critic is just ripping off Family Guy by being about a fat idiot who constantly thinks about parodies of movies? Also who the fuck cares about anything produced by 2022 Hollywood enough to laugh at a parody movie clip taking the piss out of it.

tbh everyone seems to hate family guy now, even when it makes a joke that aint that bad like the bojak one, that they wouldnt even accuse it of being a ripoff. but yea youre right. the critic came out at the exact right time that both excellent, classic films and complete mindless dreck that people still cared about were being made. '90's critic parodied nightmare before christmas, cats, misery, beauty and the beast, indecent proposal, true lies, jurassic park, the lion king and howard's end when they were relevant. even if you dont like all those things, you probably remember them all and a good chunk of those i listed are classics. now everything's less homogenized, no one just watches new movies, new music or new tv. if you parody a new song you not only wont have everyone get it but you also have to do it immediately before it becomes dated. which doesnt benefit the critic. if a new season came out and they decided to parody what's just came out they'd end up parodying Prey, the new marvel thing, avatar, and then when the season finishes up no one will care about any of those things because there will be a new marvel, a new horror movie, a new sci fi. so the only option is only do classics, but then you rob yourself of the novelty of following a film critic by trade

Jay talking about the MCU and everyone getting mad that he agrees with Scorsese. He might go even further and talk about how movies have been McDonald-ized.
