The Critic

I love this show, never get tired of rewatching. While I would've liked another season I would prefer for it to not get a reboot/remake/sequel nowadays, because I feel it's gonna be a lot of cringey predictable shit (kissing the ass of the MCU, politics sperging, etc etc).

I love the ep where jay is the trucker, and originally his trucker name is "lard butt", but when he made a crucial drive, the truckers renamed him "hard butt".
I recall the end of the episode did one of those "Read More About It" type segments with Jay stating there was nothing out there about truck driving in case anyone got interested in it but then said you could mail in for a transcript to "What was the point?" Somehow that impressed me (the animation alone was re-worked from a season one episode to make this piece), perhaps because the episode just kinda ends in a meh way.

I bought the DVD set of this show a few years back. This show and Freakazoid were sadly way ahead of their time.
Sometimes when a show is ahead of it's time, it's hard for the studio or network involve to know what audience is out there for it. I felt that way about Get A Life myself. That show would've fit in today given the sort of neckbeard culture that flourished.

I would add Duckman to any list of underrated animation as well.
Positively, that was another excellent gem.

I agree, this was a great show and I know they wanted to do an update special. Which would be set about 10 years later with Jay and Alice's kids in college, Elenor owning part of Duke's company
Which would've been a cool idea had they got to do something like this, at least as a thank-you to the fans and as a final swansong to the series.

and unfortunately, Jay's father would be dead (he was one of my favorite characters.)
Well, it was bound to happen. He was a trooper.

The critic would have to be one of my personal favourite cartoons, it just so damn funny even if some of the pop culture references haven't aged all that well.
Outside of a revamped People's Court series, nobody remembers Ed Koch!

Yesterday night, I went to a seminar at the Brooklyn Academy of Music with Matt Groening and Lynda Barry.

During the post-show AMA, somebody asked him about the Critic crossover.

He mentioned that Fox actually wanted 8 crossover episodes, 4 for each show.

While he didn't mind the idea of a crossover at first, the demand from the network resulted in Groening removing his name from the credits.
Damn, though given the circumstances, I could see why he thought that was overkill.

I still bust-up laughing at those scenes.
it's funny, 'cause it's true! (at least the original source they were ripping).

Now that's done, if anyone wants to get into the show you can watch it all here via embeds.
No excuses not to! I will say one of things about the second season that hits him a certain way is the slight upgrade in those designs. Everyone now had a more of an Al Hirschfeld look to them than before. I felt they looked better this way, but I wonder if some miss the season one look around here?

Could you image an episode with Jeremy Hawke caught in a sex scandal, while obvious, it would certainly fall prey to the current trappings of Hollywood and current political trends.

I think the clip is even more true today then it ever was.

Every time I hear someone complaining about a movie being a remake, sequel or whatever. I just tell them just don't go.
Just rent the classic!

Easily the greatest "cancelled before its time" TV show. Infinitely quotable and does the random non-sequitur joke (ala Family Guy) a million times better.

Do any of you think the show could come back on Netflix or some other streaming service? There's a chance, it took 25 years for Twin Peaks to come back, but with Al Jean running the show it might be as bad as modern Simpsons.

I think it possibly could if enough people want to do it. There are so many movies and celebrities that The Critic can take the piss out of. Of course they wouldn't be able to have Chuck Napier though. :(

They'd probably replace the character with a Mark Zuckerberg parody.

Look at sign!

It was a great show with non sequiturs that made sense within the context. The Critic was the anti-Family Guy in that regard.

My favorite will always be Jurassic Park 2. From what I can actually remember about The Lost World this was accurate.

I'm re-watching the show and I think season 2 is a little better because it gets away from the usual plot of Duke threatening to cancel Jay's show and putting Jay through the ringer.

When you look at season 1 it's pretty crazy just how many times they recycle the idea of his show getting cancelled (foreshadowing) or getting retooled. Plus Alice was a great character.

Not to mention season 2 is home to the incredible Siskel & Ebert episode.

Yes, but season 1 had more Eleanor and Franklin, whom imo are the funniest characters in the show.
