The Critical Drinker

but the fact that they've never even tried to make connections outside of Milwaukee really says that maybe they weren't even shooting for success, and perhaps they know they're getting too old to pretend they even were.
They did try with Patton Oswald and Macaulay Culkin and maybe even Rian Johnson. It just never went anywhere after that. But yeah, RLM doesn't have it in them to be making movies anymore and their reviews have gotten worse too.

Oh, we're talking about Critical Drinker? As I understand it, it's supposed to be 20 minutes, not a feature-length film, so it can't be that bad for that long. Totally agree that it's a generic spy thriller story though.

The trailer reminds me of going to the dollar theater in the '90s to watch whatever second run action film was playing that week, and I mean that in a good way. I'll take a '90s style action thriller over Current Year CGI capeshit and forced diversity quotas. At least there won't be any gay shit in this.

Mike and Jay said once -a million years ago- that they make their movies for their own amusement first. So there ya' go.

I could really go for a 90’s action film now that you say that, yeah.

I'll give the trailer this.

It looked higher quality than I was expecting. Like, it looked like some talent and effort went in to this.

Granted, I'm using films like the Channel Awesome films, AVGN Movie, and Space Cop as a baseline for comparison. Those looked like they were made by internet numbskulls trying to just have fun.

This actually looks like something that is at least mildly professional.

From the sounds of it, only James and maybe Doug and Rob really had any fun making those trash movies. Everyone else at CA certainly was miserable, and nobody on the AVGN ever went onto anything either besides James going back YT reviews. Actually all of them ended up doing that, Doug went back to regular NC after failing movies, Demo Reel, Game show..

From what I've heard of Space Cop is they hated making, especially as it dragged on. They did seem to have a good time with Gorilla Interrupted and Feeding Frenzy, but those were quick and dirty. Going wayyy back they seemed to have a good time on The Grabowski's even.

At least this Drinker one looks 'legit', even if that one actor reminds me of David Hogg. And unlike CA movies it appears to be in focus at least.

Looks pretty generic, but not bad. If understand it correctly, it is he who is the director of it, right?

Speaking of connections…

Every critic is a wannabe filmmaker at heart.
first book came out in 2012, so I'd probably attribute it more to writer wanting to see his works on the big screen. how much influence he as in the end, no idea (although I'd assume due to his youtube-gig he has vested interest to make it not shit).

if you listen to most of his criticism, it's about the writing first and foremost

Yeah, he was writing glorified screenplays.

"it's better to fail than to never try" or smth like that.
Not really interested in the movie, only watch his reviews when he does the ol' "dunking on the woke" shtick.
With both writing books and now producing his own kinda movie you cannot say he doesn't know what he talks about i guess.

It's pretty much what I expected from his books I've listened to and the budget I assumed it would have.

I'd probably VOD it, but I wouldn't go to a theater for it. Then again, I don't go to the theater for anything now.

I'll say this, it at least looks professionally made and shot well. As in the color grading isn't a disaster like AVGN or Walker's crap. And at least it appears to actually be coming out, unlike Stucmann's vaporware. And btw, it's been great seeing Stuckmann get roasted all over after Drinker unloaded on him for being a twerp.

I still don't get why these successful millionaire youtubers think it's a good idea to go all out trying to be a movie creator, since I really can't think of a single time a critic, much less a Youtuber, made a really good non teeny bopper style product.
Yea, it's pretty clear from his review of things like The Creator and non-review of Madame Web. The jig is up. You want to work with a major studio, so you refuse to badmouth Hollywood creators.

A lot of endeavors are incremental. You make one shitty thing, and then ten others, and they get better over time.
It's not just a skill thing either. When you start you got nothing, then you pick things up over time. So whatever you are doing at the at the start has nothing, and after you've done it ten times you got some tools or a program, some machines, some connections. A hundred times and you know who has skills you need, a thousand times and you can do things you couldn't dream of when you started.

But with movies they are so complicated and expensive from the start that building that up would probably take decades or more.

This is the oldest drinker video I could find on his channel, it's from eleven years ago:

...unless you're Neil Breen, whose movies have gotten worse over the years.
