The Daily Show and the Redskins

http://m.reviewjournal.com/sports/s...ntroversial-redskins-vs-american-indians-clip

Recently, a segment was aired on Comedy Central's The Daily Show that showed both sides of the debate on whether or not the NFL team the Washington Redskins should change their name. The segment seemed pretty harmless until the Redskins fans, those who don't want to see the name changed, were confronted by Native American activists who wish to see the name changed. The problem was the fans were told that being in the same panel with Native Americans would be "too serious for Comedy Central" and were then surprised, one fan left in tears and few attempted to revoke their consent before the clip aired.
Personally, I see both sides of the Redskins debate. As for The Daily Show, the fact that fans were told they wouldn't be confronted and then were is wrong.

As much as I agree with everything you just said, I don't give a shit about sports and would buy Aryan Allstars tickets DAY ONE. It'd be like the Harlem Globetrotters only racially pure.
Their mascot would be an eagle!

I don't give a shit about sportsball either, or really understand them and the hype surrounding them. I already knew in detail about how the natives have suffered because of college course requirements. But what finally torqued me on the issue was the redskins fan on the daily show that said it would be like losing a family member to have their sports team name changed. That was a disgusting thing of that fan to say.

That would be an amazing shitshow.
Now as someone who has taken university anthropology courses, what makes me sperg about the Redskin's team is that their mascot represents Plains Indians, NOT Northeast Atlantic Indians. Plains Indians are the ones who wear the feathered warbonnets. It's like confusing British with Greek culture or something. *stress sigh* But then again, we wiped most of the Indians out so we don't know much about their individual cultures to begin with. :(

[OFF TOPIC]
Northeast Atlantic Indians are fucked over in a special way, yeah? Like Trump-funded casino lobbyists have poured so much money into de-legitimizing petitions for tribal status at the state and federal levels, promoting historical and cultural research so incompetent that it verges on academic fraud, to protect their own financial interests in legal gambling.

Like the Ramapough Mountain Indians in NJ were burned so bad by this that they won't even talk to anthropologists anymore.

In terms of racist mascots, this one (for the sports teams of a rural Illinois high school) was in shockingly bad taste and stayed in place until 1980.

Oh damn, I've been bringing up San Diego Chinks as an example of why the Redskins and their supporters are retards. But apparently it's actually been done, shit...

Also, I don't watch South Park regularly, but I really loved the recent episode about the Redskins. It perfectly hit the nail on the head.

Let's ban St Patrick's day too
tfw when white kids try to claim oppression based on Victorian-era prejudice and literally nothing else. HEY YUU GUIZE i need reparations because Thomas Nast drew simian-looking caricatures of my ancestors like a century ago and I am triggered whenever I see the Notre Dame mascot and this irish yoga hat wounds me to the core and the transcontinental railroad or something hey you guys listen to me

Hey your SJW is showing. Try a little harder and the world just might get better!

Oh wait. No, it won't. This is a forum about a pants shitting autistic. Anything you say here holds no merit. It has no value. This isn't a public assembly where your input holds any form of gravity.

We've both made the mistake of taking A-Stump too seriously, I suppose he's taking the piss, as he usually does outside of chat.

I don't really care about "white people are on the top of the totem pole, (zing!) so their feelings can't get hurt". The bigger issue is that lots of Irish people love St. Patrick's Day. They organize parades in numerous American cities. Notre Dame was founded (and largely attended) by Irishmen. They think the leprechaun is awesome.

The Seminole nation is paid licensing fees by Florida State, if someone said "Dat's racist!", the Seminoles would be the first in line to smack them silly.

There is no such exchange of money or participation with the Washington Redskins.

Aw, you must be of Dutch descent.
:heart-empty:

Doesn't really matter because they can't win any games anyway. But when your NBA affiliate is the even worse Wizards and your city hasn't had any athletic achievements since Moses Malone then I guess the Redskins should be happy to at least be in the headlines.

Do indians actually give a shit, or is it just the moccasin wearing version of Sharpton/Jackson that does?
They do give a shit, what percentage, I am not sure. However, for example, casually wearing the semblance of war bonnet is really offensive given the significance of the war bonnet to the tribes that have them. They are symbols of power and accomplishment, and are almost exclusively worn by the leader of the tribe. The Omaha tribe, from my area only have one war bonnet, and it is only used when the leader of the tribe does anything big with the government, or on other rare events. Otherwise it has sat on display for decades.

Another thing an actual Indian told me is they can't stand the Redskin's cheer.

I'm assuming it becomes more "acceptable" to objectify a certain group of people (like American Indians) because they aren't that common. The less common they are, the more likely they're just something mythical and rare like a unicorn. From my recent viewing of Wikipedia, American Indians make up like 1.2% of the United States population. To put that into perspective vegans make up 2% of the U.S. population. Also, when there's less of that rare group of people, there are less of them to protest against being objectified in that way.

Also, the biggest atrocities to the American Indians (the massive killings and land stealing) happened over a century ago. Most likely is no one living today to recount any of these horrors inflicted upon their people. Compare this to the Jewish people, where there are still some survivors of the Holocaust living today. Additionally, many registered American Indians are of mixed blood, or are hidden away on reservations. So either they "blend in" with other races, or their issues are just put on the back burner because they live away from the rest of society.

There was a research paper linked to from a Native American website called "changethemascot", that claimed that Native American sports mascot stereotypes, even positive ones, have negative effects on both natives and non natives alike, citing several studies. How prevelant the negative effects are, and under what specific circumstances they happen, I don't know for sure.

Polls conducted with Native Americans regarding Native American themed mascots and whether or not they approved of them have had mixed results, but as I understand it, it's more or less of a 50/50 thing with the ones living on reservations, and more approval with the ones not on reservations. This is for mascots in general though.
