I am starting to wonder if this might be an attempt at damage control? Like maybe he's going for absolute absurdity as an attempt at muddying the water?

His past history would suggest that isn't the case, but I can see him thinking that it might work. If one muddies the water sufficiently nothing about them can be believed and no information can be considered reliable.

It won't work of course, but just food for thought.
