The Elder Scrolls

I just read the news. Much sadness. LOTRO has managed to survive all these years as f2p, hopefully ESO can too.

The game will thrive, have a community. It won't dethrone WoW or anything, but it will at least break even for investors.

Some good news, no subscription means it'll become more accessible. Maybe we'll see Jace and Eli start a Deagle Nation chapter in Tamriel.

There's been much wailing and gnashing of teeth in the forums, zone chat etc. I was just in Thornblade pvp, and the regulars don't give a fuck. They're still hooked up at the arm and getting their fix, so onwards and upwards I suppose.

Why the heck would anyone play ESO when you could be playing TERA?

much better combat, graphics and more pedo forks then you can shake a stick at.

I tried playing TERA. the limited character creator, weird Armor, atmosphere, no first person camera and no feeling of an open world personally gave me a headache.
I don't want to say it's bad, but rather it doesn't appeal to my tastes.

Wolfen and I have been working on an Elder Scrolls comic for the past year and a half.
and just now we actually are drawing and writing it. evreything beforehand was focused on lore, establishing characters, reading TES lore and drawing porn of them.
and All of this was based on a DnD campaign.

Anyone else love arena? It's more fun than Morrowind to me.
There are a lot of problems with Arena.

1. The first dungeon is way too hard.

There have been guides written on just how to survive the first dungeon in TES Arena. The lead designer for Oblivion only managed to get through the first dungeon after 20 attempts. After the first dungeon though the difficulty is much more forgiving. Compare the Privateer's Hold in Daggerfall where there's a nice simple dungeon with like 3 ways to get through it with the Imperial Prison. And subsequent dungeons range in difficulty depending on the player's level and what province you're in.

2. The game is not a true open world title.

Unlike Daggerfall and the later games, it is not possible to walk from one city to another. The terrain randomly generates infinitely in front of the player. Essentially cities are islands completely separated from one another and the only way to travel between them is through fast travelling.

3. The plot is pretty generic.

The game's plot is "Go to a dungeon in each province of Tamriel, and assemble parts of a staff so you can kill the evil Wizard"

4. There's no mouselook unlike Daggerfall

Iirc you can only control Arena through the extremely clunky Ultima Underworld/System Shock control scheme instead of the vastly superior mouselook control scheme introduced in Daggerfall.

Arena in general comes across like an Ultima Underworld clone but it's not entirely realized as a game. It introduced a lot of concepts that became staples in the TES games but I felt Daggerfall eclipsed it in almost every way.

I love Arena even though it is inferior to its successor's. Cuddlebug brought up some good points and really, Arena itself was, iirc, inspired by some other RPG's at the time so no doubt one could compare it to Ultima Underworld. Still, Arena itself is a fun romp through all of Tamriel and the Passwall spell may as well be OP in breaking through some parts of a dungeon. Also gotta like how the game actually did challenge you with a riddle, even if said riddles boggled your mind.

maybe the shittiness is part of its appeal...
Anyway, I never got through the first dungeon of daggerfall, I always get mauled by the rat for 20 seconds and then get finished off by the bat in the hallway. In fact, could you give me a bit of a hint on how not to get buttfucked by small animals so I can actually play the game?

also, how could you not love these wondrous sights?

The bigger issue with Daggerfall has more to do with it's character gen system. Which is a legitimate complaint with the game.

The character gen system in Daggerfall is a huge mess with a lot of under realized mechanics, like all of the language based skills that are basically useless. And how critical hits are tied to a skill so if you select that at charater gen you automatically start with more crits. Racial bonuses also don't actually work due to a bug. And the only races that are useful are ones like High Elf because it has a native immunity on top of it's bonuses.

The way I finally managed to enjoy the game was I copied someone else's character from a Lets Play, I'd recommend copying one from a Walkthrough personally. Since the people who do those typically know a great deal about how to min-max characters in Daggerfall's character gen. After you do that the game gets noticeably easier and noticeably better.
