It's an odd relic of virtue signalling. Remember, you don't get credit for being as woke as the rest of the crowd, you have to stand out from them.
Aracnophobia mods came from an early variant of this, where some wokie stood up and demanded it because phobias were popular fake disabilities to claim on Tumblr (literally no one can argue with you about it). It reached it's absurd endpoint IMHO when someone claimed to have a phobia about the color blue and was harassing other users who had blue themes. But I digress. Right after Skyrim was released someone pulled this and demanded / released an arachnophobia mod, where the spiders were replaced with Spiderman or something absurd. But once that early "I'm more empathetic than you are" thing hit the rest of the woke horde stepped up to go "oh yeah me too, I also give a shit about that, give me asspats for being woke and empathetic and activistic and shit!"
This is called a "Virtue Spiral" when the woke do it, similar to a "Purity Spiral." A horde pushing themselves ever more woke and to greater heights of activism to prove they're better than the crowd. It's also known by it's more common name: A lynch mob.
