The extreme danger of AI, will this kill us all? - what needs to be done to avoid the terminator timeline? what would AI warfare against humans look like how would you beat them? should AI be banned?

I am surprised this does not have a thread yet but AI is becoming scary and I consider it to be a serious threat to us. AI image generators and voice generators went from colorful TV static to indistinguishable from reality. Chat bots have evolved from retarded and stupid to passing the Turing test easily.

Boston dynamics has put together a working bipedal robot that uses algorithm AI to move around and perform tasks on the fly like a human would.

The largest limitation on these robots since the 60s has been making them be able to think. I predict by 2030 algorithm AI will become good enough for the bots to be able to do things on their own and follow instructions.

But what do you think? Am I over reacting or did humanity have a good run?

I just hope we're ruled by a benevolent ambitionless immortal dictator

We’re not in the Terminator timeline.

We’re in a timeline where “AI” is going to get shoehorned into many, many places it has no business being. And then, people are going start abdicating responsibility for decision making to it.

If you’ve investigated the technology at all, you’ll understand that this stuff doesn’t think or reason, at all. But it acts in a way such that credulous people think it does.

So, at first, it’ll be little stuff. AI will advise people to eat small rocks or put glue on their pizza. “Haha that wacky AI, amirite?” But inevitably, serious decision making is going to be handed over to it, because it’s faster than humans and much, much cheaper.

And then one day we’re going to have some shipping incident, or train derailment, or industrial accident where something awful gets released and hundreds of people die because some dummy will have done something stupid and dangerous because an AI told him to. And he’ll be punished, severely, “to send a message,” but the actual decision makers will avoid any responsibility, and AI will continue to be given tasks it shouldn’t, and more people will die.

The problem isn’t the AI. It’s a lack of human responsibility and greed. And that’s what will eventually get us killed, even if we ban AI tomorrow.

AI doesn't need to think like we do to be very dangerous to us it only needs to be able to pathfind and follow commands. Which right now it can already do (on a very basic level of course)

Don't forget either the USA is not the only country involved with this. I'm still afraid of a place like china using AI to achieve total oppression of it's citizens and then the AI that's controlling everybody gaining a mind of it's own.

I'm less worried about a Skynet‐esque apocalypse, and more worried about a retarded, lobotomized cyberpunk dystopia where we're slaves to the shoddy coding of pajeets and their Mechanical Turks. As for the latter example of a horrible future, we're more than halfway there. I mean, is there really a major tech platform/service that's objectively better than it was 10 years ago? Hell, the most ubiquitous search engine in the world is almost dead thanks to sloppy AI, and no real alternatives exist.

If AI starts killing everyone it will do it because it's told to kill everyone. Think less Terminator, more the global aristocracy doing a little pest control.

AI doomerism is one of the stupidest things out there. Pure speculation, with zero evidence to back it, because it's a popular trope in sci-fi movies. It's about as credible as sitting around fretting that any day now aliens will randomly show up and blow up the planet.

The AI that we have now can't do anything that people don't tell it to. The worst case scenario is that governments will likely just use it to do things they already do anyways like mass censorship, trying to shove gay and black people into everything, etc. These fantasies that people have about movie-like fantastic societal collapses are absurd and never play out in reality, only on the big screen.

Yes, deepfakes will probably manage to destroy society and start wars or something. Also, one of the weaknesses of your overlords is that they don't have enough manpower to micromanage your lives, AI could possibly change that.
