The Fatal Frame Thread

Was going to get it on the Switch but might do PS5 instead.

I've been wanting to get into the series for quite some time. The concept is amazing for a horror game; you have to get in close and personal with the ghosts if you want to take them out. This stands in sharp contrast with games like Resident Evil where you're encouraged to stay as far as possible while you fire your gun at the enemy. I'm more interested in the first two than I am the rest of the series. I hear Fatal Frame II in particular is one of the best horror games on the PS2.

I'd much rather some kind of remaster of I or II.

V was really mediocre compared to the other four. All the anxiety or fear I might've felt was eviscerated by random fights every 5 minutes. Most of the fights in other games felt impactful and important but here we have some Pokemon-tier shit. It was so exhausting, I was really forcing myself to play through the last few chapters. I also feel like the plot was the weakest out of all the games.

And if you wanted you could make the game basically play itself by turning on shadow reading and making the character follow the spirit. 10/10 game design.

I got really excited on seeing it announced but my heart sank on seeing it was just Maiden of Black Water again. A remaster collection would be a huge fucking boon for this series. Fatal Frame has atmosphere so thick you could insulate your house with it. Even the first game is still scary all these years later.

Koei may not have the assets to the originals, we're not getting any of the Atelier games that are earlier than the PS3 because they may have supposedly thrown stuff out.

Aw so it's not good? I never played Fatal Frame....nor the 3DS game.

It looks like there's a lot of customization for the girls though.

Yeah, I know 5 got a mixed reception but I'm glad to finally have the opportunity to play it.

I'm a huge fan of the first 3 games, although the third one is a bit of a mixed bag with the reused areas from 1 and 2, but it's still a great game.

Never played 4 due to it not getting a US release, hopefully if this is a success we'll get 4 finally and an all new game.

Even the first game is still scary all these years later.
First game scared the shit out of me when I replayed it in 2014, very rare for a game to still scare me as an adult.

The thing about the first game is it's honestly the scariest, 2 and 3 have way higher production values, the first game is very cheesy at times, but there's something about it that just makes it scarier, I think it had to do with the fact that there's a random element to things, sometimes when making your way through the mansion random stuff will happen like lanterns shaking, the ghost appearances are also more random (though not too frequent), it all adds up to the environment legit feeling more "haunted" than the more scripted second and third games, although the third game thankfully brought back a few random things that happen.

Man, such an underrated series though and so many great creepy moments, like what happens when you leave the games paused for too long...

There was controversy over the US release back in 2015 because they cut sexier lingerie style costumes, I remember arguing with SJW gamers back then that, lingerie or not, the more costumes a game has to unlock, ie the more incentive to play it, isn't that the better? And if you don't like them, they're 100% optional anyway, so why celebrate the censorship? But no, no, no, no, it fell on deaf ears because sexy is sexist and censorship is good.

This was back when Nintendo seemed to be going Woke in general with other controversies like Fire Emblem Fates, but they thankfully dialed that back a bit, I wonder if Allison Rapp legit made them more cautious with that type of person.

But I expect this new release to be uncut.

the second got a wii remake, but only was EU and Japan, would be a good one to remaster next
It'd be cool if they included a collection of all the games and their different versions, including the Xbox versions as well as the Wii versions, as they all had their differences.

I've only played the PS2 versions and I've been meaning to play the Xbox versions for ages as from what I understand they have new ghosts and new endings.

5 is probably the worst in the series. Though I not especially big on 3 either. It's still a decent game though. At least the series isn't 100% dead yet.

I hope to god that fatal frame's switch japanese physical release comes with english since it's already translated on wii u, I love my shit physical and would really suck if I had to get it digital for english

I don’t recall if the Xbox version of 1 has any differences, but 2 added an ending where you can save Mayu and the twins’ spirits are reunited. You have to beat the game on Nightmare, I think, but it’s worth getting and is probably the happiest (albeit non-canon) ending in the series.

The japanese eshop page isn't up yet but you should definitively check that first (through dekudeals with the the region set in Japan to make things easier for you) before ordering. If the language support (対応言語) shows japanese (日本語) but no english (英語) then the physical format won't be any different.

A potential red flag would be that the japanese release and the western release have different forks (which you can spot by the difference in language supports), meaning the censorship of the cosmetic costumes as previously seen on WiiU. There could be also a repeat of FE#Encore where the third-party publisher took the lazy route and used the english release as a base model for the international switch version. The fact it's also multi-platform with Playstation doesn't ease my mind either

I never got around to beating the Wii U version of PZ5. Debating whether I should get it on PC when it comes out for potentially better controls, or if I should just stick with the Wii U version if I can be arsed to set it up again
