Disaster The FDA has officially declared a shortage of Adderall

The FDA has confirmed the nation is experiencing a shortage of Adderall after many pharmacies around the country have been unable to fill prescriptions and keep up with demand.

The drug, which is also known as mixed amphetamine salts, is used to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy.

"We will continue to monitor supply and assist manufacturers with anything needed to resolve the shortage and will update our website with new supply information as it becomes available," the FDA said.

Expected recovery times for manufacturers' supplies of the prescription vary. Teva Pharmaceuticals, which sells the most Adderall in the U.S., has a 10 mg dosage of Adderall that is expected to rebound in October. But many of its generic brand offerings aren't expected to recover until March 2023.

Manufacturer SpecGX's higher doses won't recoup until January 2023, while Rhodes Pharmaceuticals has a shortage of an active ingredient.

Bloomberg health reporter Ike Swetlitz told NPR last month the shortages began due to a labor shortage at Teva, causing production delays that began showing up at other companies. Additionally, an increase in ADHD diagnoses has been driving up demand for Adderall in recent years.

"So some people are just going without," he said. "You know, they're not doing as well at their jobs. They're not really able to keep up as much in professional and personal relationships. Some people I've talked to are trying to compensate with other sort of stimulants, drinking a lot of coffee, energy drinks – people I've talked to who have thought about going to the black market."

Typically stimulant use should be combined with the development of good routines and other coping methods so that even if you run out of medication you can still function. If you're relying solely on the pill you are never going to be able to effectively manage your symptoms.

Adderall kinda fucking sucks though, way too quickly absorbed and far too much potential for abuse. Vyvanse and Concerta are better imo.
Typically yes how LIKELY is that though? Just saying on average people are probably more reliant on the stimulant and unlikely to have developed healthy habits in case of issues like shortages.

Also lol anyone going ‘to the black market’ for their Adderall is doing it wrong I mean fuck just substitute for another prescrip for a while goddamn you might be an addict if it is that serious. Some docs even off label use ProVigil for ADHD I hear.

That would explain a few things. Although wouldn't that be considered cheating?
Most large esports tournaments have no official rules against performance enhancing substance use, likely because testing for it would disqualify 90% of competitors. Another place amphetamine use is systemic is among MLB pitchers. Throwing a ball 90+ mph perfectly down the strike zone for several innings tends to require the kind of focus only stimulant use can provide.

Worked as a pharmacy tech in the mid 00's

Never once saw a kid put on Adderall get off of it, and they always migrated to the heaviest allowable dosage.

Naturally, their parents would commiserate to me about how they wish they could get little Timmy off his meds, but "nothing's working". As Timmy was tearing apart a Benadryl display behind her and she was doing absolutely nothing to stop him.

Strangely, I never met any of their Dads, it was always the kid of a strong, independent, single Mom or trailer park reject that had these kids who just wouldn't listen to authority, for some reason.
Even kids with good families end up as Adderall/Ritalin/Vyvanse zombies. Parents are woefully misinformed of how bad this shit is, and when they are sitting in a parent teacher conference and they are told that there's a miracle drug that'll stop the constant phone calls about how their kid "had an outburst" or "doesn't stop looking out the window during a lecture".
I don't even blame parents for falling for this shit, but at the same time it's a tragedy because at one point there was a generation who should have nipped this in the bud by realizing that all these symptoms of ADHD are just very natural reactions to some of the most dull bullshit. These damn drugs are a shortcut for every adult in that kid's life - from the teachers, to the parents, to the doctors. There's an absolute glut of studies about teaching methods that work for ADHD kids, but none of these practices are actually put into place because they require a modicum of effort. In addition, the pharma companies push for this shit.
There was a point where this could have been stopped in its tracks, but everybody involved either forgot their own childhood or acquiesed to the thin veneer of the authority of the education system. The whole thing is a damn tragedy. These kids are stuck in a classroom reading literature like Tom Sawyer, reading about the adventures of people who were actually allowed to have a personality.

I’ve used adderall and been off it for several years and recently got back on to help me focus at work. It definitely does help but it can fuck you up if you take it like tic tacs. I won’t deny how much it helps someone with actually ADHD/ADD, but it’s also not as big as a help as people believe it to be.

Like someone said, it's so widespread that most tourneys don't even check and try to pretend they don't know anything about it.

It's especially big in MOBAs like League of Legends and DoTA, where Adderrol gives reduced jitteryness and gives them hyper-focus for multi-tasking (Keeping map awareness while simultaneously farming or watching everyone's positions and cooldowns in teamfights).

And in RTS stuff like Starcraft where staying hyper-focused and managing multiple things (Scouting, economy, production, in-battle micro, ect) all at once is a key to high-level play.

It's used in other esports stuff too, as reduced jitters and more focus can definitely help with shooting in FPS games, but RTS and MOBAs are where it's almost ubiquitous.

If someone on it is not doing cognitive behavior therapy while taking it, they're dumb. The medication is to help solve your issues quickly and then you go to CBT so you don't spend the rest of your life on the medication. There are literal YT channels dedicated to this stuff.

When this shit is handed to kids as some kind of cure all miracle drug, I feel it cannot be stressed enough how dangerous this drug is in cases of overuse. It absolutely needs to be scheduled, an Adderall OD is indistinguishable from meth psychosis.
Psychiatrists are derelict in their duty when it comes to actually informing parents and patients of the potential dangers of this drug, especially when the prescription process is to zombify the kid until they start having a personality again, and then it's time to bump up the dosage. It's a prime recipe for abuse later in life. It should be outright illegal to prescribe to children, especially if the reason is "the kid can't sit still for three hours straight in Holocaust class".
Adderall is already Schedule II, same as meth(Desoxyn in the pharma world). When you understand meth psychosis is more just generalized amphetamine psychosis it should be understandable why they are indistinguishable, they are quite literally the same thing. Adderall is generally a much lower dose, but if you're in OD/psychosis territory I'd say it's past the point of that mattering.

If you can get on a non-scheduled option like Straterra, you should. Pro-drugs like Vyvanse have a much smoother metabolization profile that is less likely to make you tweaky. If the salts are it I usually started the day with a glass of OJ (not grapefruit) and 2 Tums prior to dosing. Really helped with the less-smooth parts.

Best advice in the thread.

Little tip for anyone who needs Adderall for ADHD. There's less effective alternatives like caffeine and St. John's Wort. Don't use sugary caffeinated drinks. Use black coffee and unsweetened tea. Dark chocolate has small amounts of caffeine in it. Milk chocolate does, too, but it's basically a microscopic amount.
