Diseased The Fidget Spinner Community - "It's Not A Trend, It's A Way Of Life."

decided to create my very own design using one of these in Photoshop

That Yelo_Canu user in the OP annoyed me so I dug through his Reddit post history. He almost feels like a parody account:

Obsessed with spinners: check
Vapes: check
Creepy posts about Katy Perry: check
Posts about weed: check
/r/conspiracy: check
antivaxxer: check
pizzagate: check

Says everything you need to know about the spinner demographic. He also used to be obsessed with Rubik's cubes. I wonder how much of an overlap there is in those communities.

This just makes me imagine what reddit would have been like if it had existed earlier.

Imagine the people who'd make Beanie Babies the center of their incel existence. Or the sovcits who'd somehow be really, really, REALLY into Tamagotchis. Or us laughing at how anyone could ever pay hundreds of dollars for a rare fucking pog.

Toy fads come and toy fads go. That's a constant. What's new is having such a complete record of people's idiocy. It's easy to quietly ignore that time you spent $50 on whichever stupid fad managed to catch your attention, but now that everyone on the internet believes every new fad calls for an array of alarmed thinkpieces and a community of people who make it their entire lives, future generations will be able to laugh at the full breadth and depth of stupidity this time period had to offer.

For me the cincher is this fad is becoming part of the flourishing "autism culture" gaining ground on the internet. It's probably only a matter of time before Tumblr starts shitting out fanart of characters playing with the things as a form of stimming.

only a matter of time

I went on eBay to order one of these for a severely autistic cousin of mine. Oh boy, big mistake. The prices people want for a set of bearings and a shaped bit of metal are obscene.
I've seen plastic ones going for over £200.

A decent entry level 3D printer is £100 or so, 8 Reds bearings (which are the ones an enthusiast skater would buy) are £20, so even the most roundabout ridiculous way of doing it is cheaper than some of this shit, and that's ignoring the more obvious option of just visiting the nearest store where they're probably £3.
