The Final Fantasy Thread

Also the only thing worth buying from the FF Pixel Remaster that was just announced is the canned FF3 Wonderswan version(?).
In a tweet, Square Enix said that the games will be getting a “pixel-perfect makeover,” which makes it sound as if these games will be improved versions of the originals that retain the original visual style (as opposed to the 3D remasters).
Here comes the 5th remaster of most of these games.

I only give a shit about 5 & 6 simply because the current steam remaster of those games are fugly as shit. A return to the original portraits, sprites and hopefully ATB gauge is welcome.

The trailer on youtube tells me almost nothing.
Final Fantasy 3 and onward are already ported to PC. I suppose people really wanted 2d Versions of FF3,4 and 6.
I wonder if they'll port the Wiiware/PSP version of FF4's sequel, The After Years to this collection.

Eww, Rosa looks like shit. She's is way too saturated.
And for a remaster with "original visuals," they're using the modern look for the FF2 cast. I thought OG Firion and Maria were essentially the FF1 Fighter sprites?

I'm gonna guess no since they probably would have featured After years in that trailer as well.

So I've been considering picking up FFVII Remake; should I or shouldn't I? I liked the demo pretty well, but I've heard that they completely fucked the plot and the combat is kind of shallow. I've also heard all the bitching about the plot is from fanboys that are just REEEEEEE-ing that it isn't a perfect copy of OG FFVII.

The combat (aerial combat specifically) can get annoying but they seemed to make some improvements with Yuffie's abilities so it might be a sign they've learned from their mistakes and it may be better moving forward

It's not that they fucked the plot so much as it's kind of a sleeper AU sequel. We really won't know the full extent of its quality until the whole remake is complete.

I liked it though and it was a good introduction to get me into the franchise. So take that for what it is.

They threw in a time travel twist but it's a bit early to say they fucked up the plot as a whole. I had a lot of fun with it.

I said this in the E3 thread, but I am salty about the collection. Do hope they are on other platforms.

I am mixed on the sprites in general. I think the best remastered spirtes for the older FF games were the PSP ones. FF5 and FF6's ugly moblie sprites just look really gross or remind me of generic RPG maker assets.

It's hilarious nobody's brought up that Stranger of Paradise game or whatever the fuck that's supposed to be.

What even is this? The aesthetics are hideous and the dialogue is so overwrought and edgy it's hilarious. The use of Garland and Chaos makes it seem like it's related to FF1, but the look and feel is so far removed that I have no idea what they're going for.

So... it's the original 6 games, but now with uniform sprites, and bland menus with generic fonts?

How is this an improvement at all to just playing the same GBA roms we've had for well over a decade now?

Glad to see Nomura took a break on shitting on FFVII's legacy to just shitting on FF's legacy as a whole. Seriously, what the fuck is that?

I think it looks neat. It feels like a soft remake of 1, and seeing Garland with Chris Sabat voicing him again got me giddy.
I think Garland is going to end up being the OG Warrior of Light (who is missing as per dialogue), who is either possessed by Chaos or has accepted his place in the cycle and assumed the role of Garland to preserve fate.

I like it too. Almost kinda giddy at the fact that the main heroes are isekai from the real world.

Always wanted to see some dark FF that we never got with 15, so let Nomura have his fun.

Yeah that looks like it will be fun. A more traditionalist dark if you will, but something that still appeals to the old guard.
I like that they are going back to the fantasy aesthetic that the previous old titles had. I do love Final Fantasy IV, since it was my first as well for V, which was back in the old fantasy feel I guess? Most of these older FF games with the castles, kings and such use medieval mixed with steampunk. 4 had space travel after all.
