The Final Fantasy Thread

Oof...be careful with 8. That one has a funky game mechanic to say the least. If you do get around to it just remember one thing : refine items and cards ASAP. Trust me.

I bought 8 when it was new (big box edition, which I still have including my hand-written GF junction chart) and completed it several times. What's put me off ever since is just how unlikable he is, the type of person who would be a complete loner in real life but for some unfathomable reason Rinoa loves him and everyone else follows him.

It is typical of Square to over-complicate things. Chrono Cross, Legend of Mana, Xenogears, f**king Vagrant Story....really, out of all of them, Parasite Eve holds up the best. It's such a lean game.
Are you referring to Xenogears story being complicated or the gameplay?

Rinoa's just using him for protection since he's competent and then continues to use him for protection while shit gets weirder.

The problem with FF8 is that the characterization is buried about 80% of the way through the game. Not spoiling anything, but things like Squall's meltdown at Galbadia make sense at that point...except that was probably like 30 hours of gameplay ago so you've forgotten it.

FFX had the same thing going on.

There are quite a few platform sections in this "visual novel".

You know it's a well-designed dungeon when you need quicksaves to navigate it.
FFX had the same thing going on.
Tidus was smitten from the beginning, and he knew something was up from the way Yuna was acting. He is Rinoa in this scenario. He's breaking her out of her shell.

Yuna isn't stoic for the sake of it: she is on a mission and doesn't want to lead him on.

Go browse some FF8 threads. It's always the same excuse: Squall and Rinoa act stupid, and that is why it's beautiful.

They don't really understand the characters then.

e: to not make this a flippant one-liner, both characters were ultimately acting out of self-interest.

Squall has a fear of abandonment, which is why he doesn't get attached to anyone. This comes from the fact that he was abandoned as a child and he's the only one who seems to remember growing up together with the other characters in the orphanage. He is weirded out by this and has an extreme fear of being abandoned and forgotten.

Squall also sees a bit of himself in Rinoa, who has also been abandoned somewhat by Cid and is lashing out with her amateur terrorism. That's why he continues to protect her despite them not really meshing well. So he can save her from becoming like him. He has a massive savior complex.

Just started playing final fantasy today, starting in chronological order. Currently playing FF1 on PlayStation Portable. I’m really having fun with it. I actually got into it because of the E3 Final Fantasy 1 Remake/Origin was hilariously early 2000’s edge and it gave me a giggle. Got an all level 12 party consisting of a Warrior, a Thief, and White and Black Mage. Saved some goobers from some pirates, now I’m just on the sea aimlessly trying to find somewhere to go next.

Since I’m kind of going into this without much knowledge about anything, blind, I do want some advice on what to be buying or what to be conscious for around the point of where I am. I’ll put some screenshots below on how the party is. (Yes, I will rest them.)

And here’s the magic I know.

Currently, I’m in Elfenheim. Elf king is sick, and I visited some other king in a ruined castle. I’m going to head south to the dungeon directly below the ruined castle filled with zombies. What is the best I can do with what I got before I move forward?

EDIT: I have about 3k Gil on me atm.

Get plenty of antidotes. Some of the monsters there can poison you and you absolutely do not want that happening.
Oh god, I didn’t even think of that. Poison messes up my groove so bad. I have to trek across an entire map and that’s just stress on my party and my Gil. I’ll get like 5 or so.

Edit: I just remembered I have poisma, but having back up for when MP will definitely run out is nice.

5's a little low. I'd recommend at least 10+ just in case things go catastrophically wrong.
Got it. Thanks man. All my niggas hate werewolves!!
The game is trying to bleed you at this point. The distance between the Cave and Elfheim is meant to deplete your items.

Luckily it gets easy after the Marsh Cave. The real challenge is not getting lost :story:
I can deal with the getting lost, SMTIV’s Tokyo is a fucking giant messy maze. Love that game, doesn’t make it any less of a slog when finding certain quest areas.

But on top of that is that the story really seems to come off the rails about halfway through. It’s really focused and relatable and then it just goes balls out bonkers.
Yes but Balamb garden is really cool looking

Also looks like Epic Store has locked down PC exclusivity for FF7R and all it's future games.

Oh no, how terrible. Epic is going to bleed itself even whiter paying Sony for all of the non-sales. Timmy boy is going to have to explain himself to his Tencent overlords on why the Japanese are getting sent massive checks.
