The Final Fantasy Thread

Still playing FFVII and recruited Vincent. Granted, I am a total wimp at this game (me using the cheats on the PS4 version says everything about how much of a ***** I am), but I'm still really loving this title.

To think, it still ranks as one of the most expensive video games ever created when adjusted for inflation, mainly due to the humongous marketing campaign Square and Sony put out for it. Yet during those years, such pushes were actually noteworthy events reserved for games that truly deserved it, as opposed to the non-stop overblown hype machine we see every year from the likes of EA and Activision. It definitely makes me feel a bit melancholy knowing that.

Advertising and marketing tend to eclipse actual development cost in quite a few instances. Mobile Games have huge advertising budgets compared to their minimal development costs.

FF7 was never a particularly difficult game, so I think of those cheats as more akin to "don't waste my time" options. After all, old JRPGs can be practically impenetrable without ways to speed them up.

It certainly felt like a really big deal at the time. JRPGs were a niche interest back then, the only FF officially released here prior to 7 was Mystic Quest, which must have made it somewhat of a gamble for them.

You're talking Europe, right? I figure America proved that Christendom likes JRPGs, but Europe just didn't get many because of the monumental task in translating such dialog-heavy games into several languages, alongside how each language would need its own cartridge due to space limitations.

and speaking of Europe and Final Fantasy, wasn't the Spanish translation of 7 laughably horrible, with like characters calling the active team a "fiesta" (because "party" as in fête -> "fiesta")? I wanna read more about that.

UK, so they wouldn't have even needed to translate anything. RPGs were more of a PC thing back then with the likes of Ultima or Eye of the Beholder, so we had no Final Fantasy, Tactics, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger and so on. We did at least get Secret of Mana though, which whilst not a JPRG was my introduction to the Square games.

Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster Screenshots Reveal Upgraded 2D-HD Scenes

by Joel December 17, 2021

Famitsu has a new preview for Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster and the screenshots from the preview appear to showcase a moderate upgrade.
Final Fantasy VI is one of the last games to get the pixel remaster treatment from Square Enix, but they might be going the extra mile with this one and adding more than a simple pixel upgrade. One of the screenshots, the famous Opera scene in FFVI, was seen in the Famitsu preview article and it shows completely revamped graphics in the new 2D-HD engine that was seen in Octopath Traveler and the upcoming Project Triangle.
The comparison below is for the Opera scene in the original release and the pixel remaster.

FFVI Pixel Remaster is also listed as coming in Winter 2021, so a release date is possibly going to be announced soon.

Man, just seeing that still of the magitek armor on the march gets the opening song stuck in my head.
Here's hoping they don't fuck this up.

I finally finished Disc 1 of FFVII, and am starting on Disc 2. Maybe because the cheats help, but I find myself having Tifa in the party most of the time alongside Cloud and one other member (usually Yuffie).

Gotta say, even after all these years, the signature scene still got me rather choked up. Heck, knowing it was coming just added to the sadness, and the build up was done perfectly too. I can see why it shocked so many players the first time they got to it.

If there's one thing about Final Fantasy that I honestly miss, it's the Job system. I know that XI and XIV managed to "perfect" the job system by integrating it into an MMO and honestly? I'm happy that such a cornerstone of early Final Fantasy still exists in some capacity. With that in mind though, I really miss the old-fashioned job system in single-player FF games.

I've been going through Final Fantasy V Advance for the first time as an adult and I was honestly taken aback by the sheer flexibility of the job system. You have incentives to experiment with and eventually master multiple jobs. Ultimately, this means that the endgame goal should be to master all jobs so that you can go to town on Neo-Exdeath/Neo-Shinryu with a Mime/Freelancer. This is a non-issue for me though, because I'm more preoccupied with the journey than the destination this time around.

It's such a shame that X-2 is the closest to a "modern" mainline Final Fantasy game that has a robust job system.
Bravely Default 1/2 are about as straightforward of a FFIII/V successor as Square is ever going to make. BD2 has a pc port and 1 is easy to emulate.

Well I’ll give you credit for going for nearly 100% completion in a game you hate.
I think I got 100% completion. I beat all the rematches and the new dragon cunt and the true ending version of the final boss..but the game is poorly designed bullshit.

Difficulty does not mean "We are going to have every single boss in the end game counter attack by gaining brave, which you have no real counter play to except to DPS so hard they don't get to act" Like Bravely default 1 had some stupid aspects to it in the late game, but Bravely second was much better about that crap..and Bravely Default 2 took a giant shit on the floor by taking what was an acceptable idea "Most enemies have a counter attack, so you need to choose your attacks carefully." to "Every action you take just grants your enemy a Brave Point so you will eventually just get fucked by the AI deciding it is fuck you time."

The Entire Brave/Default system has never really worked and I honestly think the games would be unironically better off without it.

That’s what bravebearer’s equalizer is for, it makes that easy to deal with. As for DPS absolutely breaking the combat system at the end is what makes class based RPGs fun. (Like FF tactics) I will agree that the counters definitely are annoying for most of the game. The lack of information the game gives you about enemies even after examining definitely feels like an oversight.

That’s what bravebearer’s equalizer is for, it makes that trivial.
Yes because a game that requires the use of the OP class to defeat the final boss is well designed. Mind you I said fuck that shit the moment I realized that the Shitty Dark Knight wannabe classes Ultimate skill scaled with HP spent if you used the Redmages HP to MP conversation ability.

Which makes the game even more hilariously broken because you kill everything except dragon in one round.

Well it didn’t require it obviously, like yo said you can use the hell blade+ redmage or others if you want, that’s what makes it fun.

You niggas love tactics
Its an extremely fun game to fuck with and there are lots of ways you can play it. FF6 is similar. Both are pretty easy (though FFT actually does start out challenging) but have a multitude of ways to break them.

Romhacks are very hit or miss but I found the FFT hard type hack to be really fun even if its pretty autistic. If you're someone who's combed through the entire game multiple times I recommend trying it. Someone did a monster arena type hack too but I haven't tried it yet.
