The Final Fantasy Thread

I've constantly heard people shit on the re-translation of "Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions," but it's actually one of my favorite parts of this version. (I never beat the original PS1 version, but I did play it, and the olde English thing they were going for in the remake really works for the story.)

Turbo-weebs get mad when translations aren't hyper-literal, even though the Japanese team themselves often push for archaic language in the English translation. A good example of this is Vagrant Story, where the English localization lead got orders from the Japanese team to make the text 'biblical' to better reflect the scale and themes of the story. Post-VS, this has been carried forward in all Ivalice localizations and even crept into other SE games with similar settings.

The unfortunate truth is that Japanese and English are so different that any translation is going to be a localization because Japanese is a high-context language where you need to be part of the culture (or intensely learned in it) to understand the nuances of what's being said. Without that cultural context, the literally translated text is going to sound dry and extremely stilted. Localization isn't, in itself, bad, especially when the setting is vaguely western. Western fans just have a bad reflexive response to it because of the censorship of old and the increasing censorship of now being justified under the banner of 'localization.'

Anyway, if you liked FFT, you should check out Matsuno's other titles. Tactics Ogre was his big franchise before coming to Square and Vagrant Story is also kino (if you can handle a slightly convoluted battle system). Also he has some kickstarter game coming out but it's been development hell forever so it might be a flop.

So wait, the remake is actually a reboot with a different storyline? It's almost like without Hironobu Sakaguchi the plot is little more than fanfiction just like Advent Children. Are you telling me that the person actually creating and writing the game is more important than the title of the game or the characters in the game? Crazy, who would have guessed that?

For Western developers you also have Owlcat Games, Iron Tower Studio, and inXile (although admittedly I haven't liked any of their games so far but I'm still oddly hopeful for Wasteland 3 not to suck).

Now I'm concerned

I'm collecting all the beastiary entries and I'm noticing two references to Lightning and one with Type-Zero. I swear if they try resurrecting that bullshit and the cut Fabula Nova Crystallis stuff that's going to be the end to the series. If the exceptional Lightning Waifu guy gains control of the series he's going to fucking crash it into the ground and exceptional individuals will blame the story for ending the series and not the dude's atrocious views on what counts as gameplay. So westerners will further think RPGs are just supposed to be non-itneractive movies and will try and replicate netflix specials and market them as games, while ignoring actual proper series like Dragon Quest
Let them ignore Dragon Quest. I am perfectly okay with that.

Meanwhile Lightning showing up would not surprise me one bit. Not a single bit.

I'm annoyed that the FF7 remake will be episodic. I would've preferred if they just put all the discs and episodes together.
Sorry bub, you have to get with the times. Final Fantasy VII sure is!

Aerith is....

Fuck this.

I am so fucking happy that ff7 didn't have any voice over. This is so fucking cringe. I guess this is one way of destroying our childhood.

OH HEYYY I HERD U LIEKED FF7 WHEN YOU WERE A KID. HOW BOUT I MILK THAT SHIT SEQUEL AFTER SEQUEL

Controversial Opinion Time:
I enjoy the world of final fantasy 7 and it's characters and am interested to see what this Remake/Reinterpretation of 7 has to offer. There was a lot of cut content to 7 due to time constraints and I wonder if some of we're seeing in the new content is based on that. I will hold any and all judgements until I play and beat Part 1, as I'd rather not destroy my new experience of the World of FF7 because it's a not a direct 1:1 of the old one.
Most of FF7's cut content got reworked into other games, specifically Parasite Eve, Xenogears, and FF8.

FTFY. Tactics Ogre was the middle title of the Ogre Battle series, the other two of which play pretty differently from Tactics but share visual and musical direction and Matsuno's historical war-inspired stories.

Aerith's VA is kind of a problem to be honest. I mean she's not terrible, and maybe it's just not at all how I imagined the character sounding. But she doesn't seem to have much range.

I know I'm gonna get hammered for saying this, but is it wrong if I'm honestly now more interested in the FFVII Remake after hearing all the details about where the story goes?

Personally, I see this as being akin to the Rebuild of Evangelion movies; starts out as a prettier version of the original, before going in a different path, along with hints that it's actually a sequel and the like. For me, I actually like seeing different interpretations of stories so long as they are done in an intriguing and entertaining manner, and the Remake does look to be that. Plus, the gameplay and presentation all looks to be top notch (which is what got me invested in this game to begin with).

I do agree that SE should've been a bit more transparent regarding the nature of this game, and probably should've called it something besides just a remake (even though that moniker does make some sense when you really think about that title). But even so, I'm still excited to play it, though I do get where some of the complaints are coming from.

Maybe, though if they decide to do a different interpretation of that game like the FFVII Remake, they would be wise to not call it a remake, but a reimagining like this VII game.

You think Square will remake FF8 after this?

That's the one that needed to be remade.

I think many people wouldn't have felt this strongly if they knew this was a sequel if they were upfront from the beginning. This is 5 years of buildup with people asking for a remake longer than that.

It's just a huge disappointment and I'm still trying to figure out who this game was aimed at. They seem to think this "twist" is clever, but it's more of a bait and switch slap in the face. Just extremely weird and misguided marketing. I still have a theory that this was an actual full-on remake just two years ago and all this junk was added in last minute.

What that game really needs is a retranslation. Apparently everyone is much less irritating (Although the infamous "Whatever" line is mostly in the original japanese version.)

It's still a mess even in Japanese. It's a game with interesting ideas and I still greatly enjoy the first disc, might be one of my favorite parts of any Final Fantasy game, but it really falls apart at disc 2 and the orphanage might be one of the dumbest plot conveniences I've come across in any story.

Also, am I the only one who just hates the character designs? It seems with every new iteration of these characters, be it in spin-offs, sequels, whateverthefuck.....they just continue to feminize the male characters. At this rate, Tifa will be the dude while Cloud will the female in a couple more iterations, no need for any crossdressing, and most of the Turks look like they are a boy band group. But this isn't even with FFVII, they did it recently with Squall in the remaster (he looks terrible), Tidus got screwed up in the FFX remaster (I believe another company worked on FFX remaster) - only game I can think of that SE didn't do this with was FFXII, it was relatively faithful to the original release.

I finally beat "Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions" tonight... And I really enjoyed it for what it was, but damn.. 'King' Delita's final question: "Did you get your end in all of this, 'Ramza'?" (I named my main character something else, but that doesn't really matter here.) That hit me hard... I wish that this game had gone on longer, but I really enjoyed it for what it was. I might say more later.
