The Final Fantasy Thread

I’ll definitely give FFXVI a try but I have only about two issues with it.
First is the main cast seem underwhelming. It reminds me a lot of the FFV main characters. There’s nothing that really pops out to me unless you’re somebody who thinks a facial scar makes a character look cool. I prefer the FF with weirder looking characters and I’m sick to death of all human casts.
Second issue is the director Hiroshi Takai who also directed The Last Remnant. In my opinion that game was absolute shit and there are a few things that look slightly similar to it in FFXVI at least with the art direction. Takai was put on FFXIV for a while after, I don’t like MMO’s so I don’t know if he got any better.
I think the combat looks alright and hopefully a little better than FF7R. I still prefer the classic turn based combat though but I’m probably not who they’re trying to sell to anymore. Also thank god there’s no anime and movie required to watch before this comes out (at least for now).

Zack getting resurrected and time traveling really is canon so unless he dies saving Aerith then Aerith-bros BTFO'd.
Or maybe the whole thing is Aerith's dream and Zack is a fragment of her psyche trying to save her.

There are just a bunch of these robot heads hanging around in the middle of FF4's moon, that spam a really weak Holy a lot, and are really obnoxious. Why are they there? What are they for? Who knows?
Deathmask: a plaster of a person's face upon death.

Coupled with Zemus' spare parts floating around in the Subterrain, perhaps he is creating more clones and strand-ins of himself in the hopes that one will offer a suitable vessel for him to inhabit. For example, those Deathmask face enemies or whatever. All this effort is ultimately wasted since all they do is cast spells like Libra; they have no useful purpose other than to annoy you.

Again, it's not explicitly stated, but any encounter on floors B8-B12 can be considered a "boss" because of the music.
I haven't played Final Fantasy in years, but one thing I always liked, especially in the 2D games, was how there's zero context for most encounters
6-8 was the golden age of weird-ass monsters. House with legs, skeleton in a pirate ship, little blue alien in a UFO, hockey players...

16 to me seems they're putting a shitload of prominence on the summons. So much so I figure they're going to be integrated heavily into combat. It already looks like that you change your combat style by aligning yourself with a specific summon. The summons also being real people probably means those will be the party members.

I would say 13 was the last real turned based one. As much shit as that game gets, the battle system was actually fun.
13 got tedious, 13-2 then went full retard in the other direction and made shit fall like paper, Lightning Return's combat was probably the only one that balanced shit right.

Lightning Returns is also probably the only 13 game that's actually fun.

I will probably give FF XVI a chance, it looks somewhat interesting from the trailers but I truly haven't enjoyed a FF game since XII. FFXIII bored me to tears and I didn't like any of the party members. I still have to check out FF XIV at some point.

I don't know if I'm just getting old FFXVI looks like something I'd enjoy if I were 14.
Cloud was rated #1 in Japan...after Advent Children. Lightning would go on to beat Cloud in the rankings.

This is another modern Cloud for Japanese kids to latch onto. They seem to like intense, brooding characters.

I am torn because remakes always do something supremely gay and fuck up what made the game good in the first place.

But at the same time I would love an 8 remake just so I can have my weird little 10 minute space horror segment, also I want to see cringe virgin Laguna voiced and in HD.

This is going to be controversial because I know a LOT of kiwis here can't stand Remake, but I actually think they balanced out Cloud's characterization pretty well there. They did the brooding emo KH trope and then spent most of the game consistently showcasing what a fucking socially awkward dork Cloud is at the end of the day, complete with his OG wisecracking asshole persona. Some people might not be into that, but I'd say it's a welcome change from Advent Children.
