The Final Fantasy Thread

Remake it with just better graphics and maybe more sidequests or remake and revamp it (i.e. change the gameplay mechanic)?
Fuck that, make better graphics, make more side quests but how about you not touch the game play. There was nothing wrong with the gameplay from SNES-PS2 era RPGs. Stop trying to turn RPGs into shitty ass offline MMO garbage. That is why Final fantasy became shit after 9. The only one with refined gameplay was X-2 all the rest tried something "new" that ended up as broken fucking garbage.

What I do like about X-2's premise was exploring a post-Sin world, see how everyone coped with a very sudden shift now that they no longer have to fear Sin. I do think by having Tidus come back in the end, they chickened out and one of the reasons why I don't want a direct sequel.
Atleast HA HA HA HA autist coming back is less retarded than ending E in Nier
Jesus fuck what was yoko taro thinking

That held the title of the greatest video game movie before Sonic took the crown.

>Rufus coming back to life
>The Turks becoming too goofy and "one of the gang"
>Sephiroth coming back to life turning him into a Saturday Morning Cartoon Villain
>Cloud getting his personality retconned to his Kingdom Hearts version
>Zack being in the afterlife with Aerith even though FF7 established most life gets dissolved into the Lifestream's gestault

Nah.

He wanted to be with mommy dearest who wasn't even really his mom and wasn't even really an ancient. He may have even largely just been acting on the same kind of Jenova instincts with ad hoc rationalizations Cloud had in pursuing Sephiroth throughout the game. Screw all that compilation "Sephiroth's will was so strong he just psychically ate his mom" crap, the ambiguity was cool.

Apparently Ultimania said that Sephiroth really died in that mako reactor but his will was so strong he dominated Jenova and reformed himself in the north. Personally, taking FF7 alone I'd take it that Sephiroth just drifted up towards the Northern Crater and got frozen there but remained concious enough to impose himself on Hojo's experiments (after all, Jenova wouldn't know Cloud).

Because JRPGs are otherwise well known for being respectful of Christianity, of course.

Honestly? Dragon Quest and Fire Emblem both have plenty of helpful or at worst non-villainous churches.

I'm aware. But Ultimania is non-canon bullshit written years afterwards. It's about as canon as the Star Wars prequels/sequels. Sephiroth was rejected by the lifestream because y'know, alien parasite. And Sephiroth/Jenova didn't initially know Cloud. It took it/him/them a bit to figure out who he was supposed to be.

...the gameplay for X wasn't bad, I can't vouch for the rest since then.

Also, yes FF7 lore (never mind FF8 lore) is ridiculous.

...the gameplay for X wasn't bad,

Yes, yes it was. The Sphere Grid was terrible, The "Crafted" Weapons and Armor system was horribly designed and the in battle mechanics were atrocious by the end of the game with Tidus having enough speed to just ignore the "supposed" mechanics you were intended to follow and just spam delaying strike on anything not a boss until it fell over. Final Fantasy X was a terrible game from top to bottom and I would say it is the worst in the series but 12, 13 and 15 happened.

I think the only FF games that took a shit on religion was 10 and 14.

edit: oh yeah the POPE is the final boss of 13.

The problem with FF's sequels is the very problem with enough sequels/prequels/other: Telling more from a story not designed to have much more to tell.

Advent Children did "what you saw happen is undone or not really what happened." After Years did "trivalize what happened before."

i think nier: replicant to nier: automata was a good implementation of a soft sequel. the story from replicant had a huge impact on the setting of Automata but they both work well enough as standalone games.

I enjoyed X-2's gameplay a lot, the dress spheres were a fun system, but I found the story to be really trite and as others have said it felt like it undid a lot of the emotional weight of X.

I actually wrote up a bunch of ideas a few years ago for the setting of FF4 after the game's end that set up conflicts for another game in a natural way, not just rehashing the plot points of the first one, but frustatingly I can't find where I put the write-up. Things like the bad guys turned a bunch of people into monsters for their army and not all of them were destroyed, what happens to them? Do any of them try to reintegrate into society, or do they form their own society? Or the fact that the former king of Baron, from the point of view of the population, just mysteriously disappeared one day and this guy who was banished comes back saying "He was a monster and I killed him, also I am holy now"; wouldn't that seem off to some people? Or this huge magitek giant thing just blew the fuck up, shouldn't there be large chunks of alien machinery left over and maybe even still-functioning internal defense robots? Stuff like that.

You can probably add XV to that list since most of the gods in that game are complete dickheads towards humanity.

Speaking of IV, does anyone else prefer the GBA/PSP bonus content compared to the DS/iOS/Steam versions?

-Before the final dungeon, you gain the ability to swap out any non Cecil Character. Besides the original final party(Kain, Rosa, Rydia, and Edge), you now can also use Edward, Yang, Palom, Porom, and Cid.
-To make sure that the five other characters can function, they all rejoin around the same level as everyone else, and a new dungeon opens up where you have to use the five characters to fight specific bosses that drop fancy new equipment for them(the dungeon itself is also full of many new items in general to make sure everyone is properly outfitted)
-There is a post-game dungeon, it is extremely massive and on top of the many floors within it there are trials for every character to gain their ultimate equipment(some of which change their more useless command prompts with much better ones). At the end you fight a alternative version of Zeromus whose appearance is based on what he looked like in the Japan-only Final Fantasy IV: Easy Type.

Well I was talking about more about organized religion and not deities smiting mortals, if that was the case we might as well add like 3 fourths of the FF games.

The GBA version is buggy as fuck but the PSP version is the best since it fixes the bugs and comes with the After Years but yeah good luck finding a copy since it's PSP.

I still have mine in the storage room in a box beneath the baby stuff. I should dig it out sometime. PSP was honestly a great system for RPGs.
