The Final Fantasy Thread

From what I understand, Zack doesn't survive in the game's current timeline. Aerith senses him in a different timeline where he gets back with Cloud. This is why I think Aerith will go to that timeline. Basically, I think the plot will end up pretty much the same except Aerith and Zack will be in a different timeline instead of the lifestream.
The only thing that could actually make this work for me is if it turns out to be one bloated tie in with the Square-Enix Avengers game and Sephiroth has the Infinity Gauntlet but Zack has the Time Stone or some shit as a lead in to Kingdom Hearts 4 where Barrett will go to visit Wakanda. If you're gonna fuck up, fuck up amazingly. Balls to the wall, if this doesn't happen Nomura is holding back his true exceptional individual vision.

Meanwhile, Sakaguchi laughs at the shitstorm he won't have to weather.

What annoys me about all this is that there was a lot of potential in a remake of FF7. I love the original to death, but I'm not gonna deny it's perfect. Maybe a remake could have expanded on themes that were undercooked in the original, like AVALANCHE being just as guilty as Shinra due to their rampant terrorism or giving Vincent a larger role. Or maybe just retell the original but update the gameplay. This isn't a remake like their remakes of FF3 or 4, it's another continuation in the autistic maelstrom that's the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII.

But you know what I hate the most? It's devaluing the original's theme of death. The original game was influenced by the death of Sakaguchi's mother, and that sense of life and its importance permeated throughout the game. A lot of people died in FF7. Jessie, Biggs, Wedge, Aerith, Zack, Dyne, and the biggest takeaway I got from that is you can't undo death. You have to remember the people as they were in life and move on. That's why the scene where the party's remembering Aerith is one of my personal favorite scenes because that's the moment where it sinks in that Aerith is dead and nothing can bring her back. All anyone can do is follow her example and keep their memories of her. But the remake? Zack, Biggs, and Wedge survive lol! Why have permanent character death and examine how that affects everyone else when we can just rewrite them back to life? It's cheating and I fucking hate it. If this ends with Aerith surviving I'm gonna be pissed.

I know I'm going to get a lot of hate for saying this, but I'm not too bothered with the changes in this remake. Especially since it's more of a reboot than a shot-for-shot remake, and unlike Mortal Kombat 2011 or the remakes of RE2 and RE3, each Final Fantasy game has its own continuity and setting, so I don't see it as all that egregious. As others have pointed out, it's like Rebuild of Evangelion, a reboot disguised as a remake.

For one, this remake is only covering the first act for now. We don't know how the other parts will handle the changes and maybe there's something in the post-Midgar games that will explain it better.

Two, I don't think Aerith will live unless it's in some New Game+ mode that's referencing the old urban legends about resurrecting her or if it's part of some in-game decision where one choice will allow Aerith to live but someone else will die and the other choice will have her die like she did in the original.

I'm going to be cautiously optimistic for now and wait until I get to play it myself. There was a lot of uproar over the RE3 remake, but I've enjoyed it so far despite the changes and minor flaws of that game.

My issue with this stems from the idea of timelines not really gelling with what FF7 is about. Yes, each game is its own self-contained continuity, but that allowed each game to explore new ideas. FF8 had the time compression stuff, why not have that game do alternate timelines and shit? FF7 at its core is an environmentalist message along with general themes of death and letting go of those who have passed on. Presenting alternate timelines that allow for characters to not die just feels antithetical. If the changes were made without the timeline crap, I would have been way more forgiving. Hell, I half-expected them to let at least one of the AVALANCHE trio live, and I wouldn't have minded that if it was done as a way to present an alternate way of telling things.

It's not the changes that bother me, it's the context surrounding them. If the game presented itself as an alternative way of telling the story, like REmake 1 or something, instead of doing all this timeline shit, I would have probably defended any major changes outside of say, Aerith living.

Also, people keep bringing up Rebuild. My knowledge of Evangelion goes as far as the first ten or so episodes, but quite frankly that idea sounds absurd to me.

If you've played either of the Nier games in New game+ this is basically what happens. Your secondary playthroughs retain the knowledge of the events of the first despite this being an entirely "fresh start" and the campaign alters itself a bit. Dragon's Dogma also did this.

Basically the remake is based on this concept of being a New Game Plus to Final Fantasy 7.

SAY, speaking of a game that did the time travel shit better and yet I still feel ripped off (which is another way of saying I fucking suck at this game), how about Type-0 Remaster?

Gods, this game feels like it's been trimmed down and neutered. You can plain tell Type-0 was meant to be played in a multiplayer setting, because the dynamics of everything feels fucked since it's only in single player. You as the player are solely responsible for achieving instant kill frames or Killsights, which allow you better souls or Phantoma to upgrade magic, as your CPU controlled allies can't do that, even if foes are in Killsight. Your actions in battle are also severely limited, which is originally done to encourage teamwork, and they nor the movesets are not redone at all to accomodate for single player gameplay. What sucks even more is that this game demands you to Killsight everything than typically fight everything like in a game, ie wailing on foes non stop which only triggers my OCD because plenty of characters have gameplay centered around achieving multiple hits.

And I am also not going to replay this game because several playthroughs are encouraged to understand the story and gain your ultimate weapons. I currently have no patience for this.

She senses him in a different timeli- what? Now she has that power as well? Being able to summon Meteor wasn't enough? Now she has to be the fucking G-Man? And there are multiple timelines? What??

That's dumber than all of Advent Children.

Hah, I meant to say that she could summon Holy. Though with that said, I assume an "ancient" could also summon Meteor. But I only ever played the game so what do I know.

My favorite part of FF7 was always when Sephiroth throws the entire Shinra building at Cloud who goes SSJ 7 and cuts it in half. It really speaks to the game's themes and has a great slow build up.
My favorite is when the gang starts to throw him in midair, propelling him to fucking mach 1.

You can be cautiously optimistic while not using SE's marketing strategy by calling it a Remake. Start there and you can love anything you want about it.

On the one hand, you've got to admire the sheer balls of Nomura to bring in time travel.
This is not a Final Fantasy VII Remake, this is Final Fantasy VII: Remake. Sephiroth is literally trying to re-make the timeline. It's actually genius in a way, but also completely insane.
Nomura is a man who had the MO of making a game where you fuck around in some Disney worlds and sprinkle some Final Fantasy IP in there for good measure, and turned it into the most convoluted plot in mainstream media. No way is he going to reign himself in with the timelines here, and unlike Kingdom Hearts, fans already have a roadmap with the boxes this remake series needs to tick.
I can see why it's happening though. The big lead up seems to be contriving a way for the player to subvert the original and save Aerith, but it also means the final boss isn't gonna be 1-winged angel. It'll probably some Xehanort-esque byzantine conclusion where time-travelling AC-Seph merges with OG-Seph to make a two-winged angel. Hope it pans out because Square-Enix put all the eggs they would have put into FFXVI into this project instead, and if it backfires the company may as well start shopping for coffins.

See you all in 2025 when the compiled Definitive Edition is released and its a 4 part, 350GB experience.

The sheer balls? It's all he knows what to do lol Plus, he's not the writer anyways, the dude who wrote the story about Tidus getting his head blown off by a blitzball is who wrote it.

Now they have assests it will probably be a part every 16 months.

I didn't know it was allowed to give AAA releases from a major studio lower than an 8.5
It's certainly a more finished and complete game than 15 was.

And people saying "OH BUT I MIGHT TAKE FOUR GAMES TO FINISH", it's like bitch you don't know nothing we've been waiting 9 games for Calvard.
