Is it just me or is level grinding not really a thing in original FF7? I have been grinding a bit, but mostly when I want either gil or limit breaks, and leveling up just seems like a side benefit.

Levelling up doesn't do anything other than raise your stats a bit, IIRC. I still try to grind my level out to the next multiple of 5 before carrying on.

AP will level your Materia though, once it's mastered it gives you a copy (Original FF7 only), so it's worth grinding a bit.

It's mostly something you do late game to level up your materia. The true grind is morphing stat sources. You gain very little just from levels.

Level Grinding isn't a thing in any game if you aren't a moron and can actually manage the battle system.

Interesting stuff from an interview with Nomura, Nojima, and Kitase here from the Ultimania Book:

—In regards to the story’s important key points, there must be a flashback scene from here on out, right?

Nomura:
At first, the direction we took was that we did not want to put any of these hints while still in Midgar.

Nojima: Right, we originally planned to have the storyline diverge only slightly.

Nomura: We thought to have only a subtle change where in the ending you see Biggs alive, which makes you think, “Wait, this is weird…” and gives a slight sense of unease. But then the staff thought, well if there’s room for more scenes, then let’s just add it (laughs). When we did that, there were scenes that we had to say, “No this won’t do,” and removed it from the story. We didn’t add too many new things, but we did leave a few scenes in.

Nojima: I myself added about two or three scenarios to that too….I’m not too sure what happened to those scenarios at the end. (laughs)

—The scenes where Sephiroth appear in have also be greatly added into the storyline.

Nojima:
In the beginning we didn’t plan to have him appear so often, more as an overlooming presence instead. During the middle of production, we changed our minds and decided to have him appear more frequently, and suddenly he was in a ton of scenes.

Nomura: At that time, Hamaguchi-san (Co-Director) quietly pulled me aside and said, “I want the characters to fight Sephiroth in Midgar” and consulted me with this idea. In the original story, Sephiroth exists in a different space, and apparently he gathered materials to persuade me to have the battle play out in this way, but I just said, “Okay sure,” and greenlit the idea. (laughs)

Seems Nomura wasn't the main person who called for the major deviations to happen, and that he in fact wanted it to be more subtle.

It's an entire team of rat bastards lol Nomura is like Todd Howard in that he's the face of everything wrong with the company. Square Enix's problems run much deeper than The Belt Man. It's a culture that favors shithead pretentiousness and shoving faux deepness into their games.

FF7R's problems are not just the result of Nomura. Fucking up a game like this takes a team effort. Notice how Yoshi-P is staying far away from this mess and in his FFXIV lane.

And here I am wondering if I'm one of the few people who are honestly intrigued by the new direction the Remake games are heading now that things have settled down.

The vast majority of players love the new changes and are excited to see what Square does next. The people complaining are in the minority and that will not change in the coming years. You'll also hear less and less from us as we get pushed out by Gamers (tm) because of our negativity. If you go to Twitter and Youtube, the praise for this game is well night universal and people who break this line are being attacked and downvoted into oblivion or whatever.

I'm not surprised. I called it from the beginning based on my experience with FFVII fans. If FFVIIR broke into a house and killed a family of five, I'm sure the fanboys would defend it simply because it's FFVII.

Shit like this happens all the time. When a event this big fucks up, few are willing to admit it.

Remember: There was a good few years before everyone was willing to admit what a turd The Phantom Menace was

Welp I found the 2 minute Hardmode Hellhouse build online, stagger the fucker then cast bioga and he doesn't even make it to third phase and you can user your limit breaks 2-3 times with Goddamerung.

They're not lying about Bioga being overpowered, you just have to triple slash the tonberry motherfuckers.

Did you ever look up somebody called Xuses on youtube? Seems like he has hard mode pinned down pretty easily.

Interesting details here.

1: Apparently it fell hard in the second week of sales, into the midst of evergreen products. It's just ahead of Luigi's Mansion 3 (which released 6 months ago, remember.)
2: The fact that they don't even know how many more parts they need, what's going to be DLC, and so on spells nothing but bad for this game. It took a long-ass time to come out, and even people praising the ending have low expectations for seeing this entire thing through.

anyway, I expected Squeenix not to do a 1:1 remake, I mean FF7 has some really ridiculous parts like stepping on a dolphin so it can launch you to high places to go back to Midgar... But at least I expected them to have some brains and do the remake like Capcom did to RE1 or at least RE2. So much pointless padding, so much pretentiousness. And the worst of all, it has a big budget, and made the story "super serious" but the animations of the characters are still from 3rd-rate stock animations from PS2 era, like the head down, arms down sighing, stomping the ground angrily, waving the hand angrily animations...

I didn't exactly think the game was all that big of a mess up, and still enjoyed it, for whatever my opinion is worth.

I heard the same about The Last Jedi. The entire thing won't even be remembered a few months after it's final release. Same with Kingdom Hearts 3. All that buildup....to what? Nobody gives a shit.

Agree.

Also the dolphin bit was to get to Junon. It was after the old man got his rocks off watching you perform CPR on Priscilla. I can't wait to see how they've expanded Priscilla's role. I'm sure she's going to be in charge of AVALANCHE Junior fighting the baddies in Junon with child-level sabotage. Until one day they take it too far. Then Cloud shows up to breathe on her face for a while.

I dunno. It's selection bias but on sites with little to no moderation like 4chan as opposed to youtube, the opinion is overwhelmingly negative.

It's all a big 'maybe' at this point. Square has been getting away with their bullshit for so long that I simply don't trust the regular person to understand why this stuff is bullshit or why it matters.

So today I saw a youtube video that really got my noggin a joggin. It was a video from Crisis Core of Sephiroth fighting Genesis (OC DO NOT STEAL) and some other OC, and it made me realize all of Final Fantasy VII's Compilation event they did when Advent Children came out was really about one thing: Nomura making edgy OCs because he thinks FFVII was all about Sephiroth. If you look at all the games under his watch at the time they all included new villains and all of them sucked and felt cringy (Genesis is just Gackt).

And now here we are and Nomura is directing VII again, just waiting on the OCs but really he's sort of turning all the characters in to his cringe OCs.
And the plot changes show that Nomura can't even get through one game without KUH-RAZY moments. Final Fantasy VII is now as much of an autism magnet as Kingdom Hearts.

Give regular people time, they'll get sick of it even if it's just the episodic nature (which Squeenix are talking about making more episodic now, as in cutting it down to even smaller parts) and it's terrible writing. The difference is regular people don't remember how good FFVII was, they think it's just an old game that isn't worth revisiting and most of them haven't played it in like 20 years. That and they're slow, very slow.
