Not sure how the "humans are extinct" theory prevailed.
I've heard the Final Fantasy fandom malignly compared to the Harry Potter fandom many times. So maybe they're just dumb?
This is the same fandom who, instead of the actually clever theory about Rinoa time travelling, went with "Squall dies and the rest of the game is a hallucination."

The idiots are always louder and more numerous. The larger the fandom, the more idiots it will have. Therefore, the larger the fandom is the dumber it is. Final Fantasy is a large fandom. QED.

Nobody wants a 6 sequel. They act like they do, but they don't.

Those same people wanted a Metal Gear 1 remake. Why? It's redundant and it'd be dated in a few years.

They're ashamed to go back and play old games.
Reminds me of how I've seen people tout that they want a Metal Gear 2 remake, and I can't help but think "Then go replay Metal Gear Solid," in that case, because that's basically what MGS1 ended up being both mechanically and narratively.

It seems like Portable Ops and Peace Walker were conceived as a half-measure Even has the same elevator controls as the MSX game.

Jokes aside, I don't care for this shared universe stuff. It's the same complaint as Star Wars. It makes the universe feel smaller.
Repeated the same assets, elements, characters, tropes, motifs, and so on always shrinks a universe. It's how our brains work. We respond to sameness and consistency by taking it for granted in its familiarity.
Writing something meant to be climactic that isn't actually the end creates a sense of futility imo.

Has this been discussed yet? There's a rumour that Team Ninja will be developing an action RPG that's related in some way to FF1 entitled "Final Fantasy Origins".
>team ninja

Oh boy. What could possibly go wrong?

I hate anime, and I've always thought this series is super gay, but is it worth playing the FFVII remake just to experience a "legend" once? Is it actually an amazing game with a deep story, or is it just weebs upselling it because it's an anime game?

No, because the Remake is a remake in name alone and is likely going to end up a sequel as it monkeys with the original plot in ways that are irreconcilable. Either play the original FFVII on PC with the Remako mod (machine learning program upscaled every pre-rendered FMV and background in the game) or wait until the mobile game Ever Crisis comes out, which is going to be the VII remake many people wanted that keeps the super-deformed style of the original.

I played the original many years after release (~20 years) and the thing that interested me the most was that a lot of my pre-conceived notions about the character personalities were completely off base. Especially Cloud. I was expecting a mopey emo, not a flippant horny asshole
And I'm utterly amazed that while "lol Sephiroth kills Aerith" was spoiled for me and the rest of the internet not long after release, other major plot points took me pleasantly by surprise like how Cloud was never a supersoldier, just a regular infantryman and that Sephiroth was dead the entire time

Am I glad I played it? Yes. Has it aged well? Some parts. The rendered backgrounds and the music are still fantastic. The character models and sound effects almost gave me an aneurysm though.

This was Advent Children's fault, but Nomura also clearly wanted to spin Cloud as a moody broody emo as early as Kingdom Hearts. Many people see only that moody broody emo, and never delve further into the reality that Cloud's a dork from the middle of bumfuck nowhere that just wants to be cool.

The ending seems to suggest that Cloud is going to change the timeline (possibly saving Aerith), leading to a "Kelvin-verse" scenario similar to Star Trek.

Shit, even Crisis Core understood that element of his character.

EDIT: What bugged me about VII Remake was the fucking ghosts. Every time they show up it kills the pacing of the story dead in its tracks. They're not even hallucinations since normal people clearly react to them. The first half of the final boss involve fighting the big ghosts that will monkey around the plot of later games. Given how big this game is, there is absolutely no need to pad it out like this.

It's been a while, but I don't think there's a story explanation as to why you collect 40 characters. It felt Suikoden-lite in that sense, except that all of the characters are morons.

The problem with Chrono Cross was that it felt too much of a different game than a direct sequel. It only raised more questions and made folks hope for another game to explain this convoluted things. I mean there was a letter from Lucca to Kidd about someone that has been watching over her while she isn’t there and told her to tell him “Hi Janus!” hinting that Magus should be present. But he isn’t.

Characters don't behave anything like their PS1 counterparts, even before Cloud has his premonition. Like Coster said, Cloud went from a multifaceted character to someone who mopes all the time, forever hunting Sephiroth and trying to avenge Aerith. Nomura probably wishes that Vincent Valentine was helming this series. So, he's busying himself trying to angle Cloud into this Vincent-shaped hole.

Go skim the Let's Play Archives. Have a laugh at the screenshots. Get the gist of the plot. Or just play the original on PC.
I thought Nomura did a good job of combining his interpretation from AC with the original flippant personality from VII. Could have been a little less subdued, but he had more spark in him as he was more tired of other peoples shit then angst ridden.

I guess one of the things that kind of baffles me about FF7R is that most of the dramatic weight towards the end depends on the player having a working knowledge of the original game. Leading up to its release, I saw a lot of people say that they had held off playing the original because they knew the remake was forthcoming, and the last act of the game must have been incomprehensible to them. Again, we’ll see how it plays out, but it seems that FF7R’s story is extremely unwelcoming to new players as it requires knowing a bunch of lore they are unfamiliar with, while simultaneously potentially alienating fans of the original who don’t want the original story altered too much.

As I said, the ghosts make the story incomprehensible and I did play the original game. At least Sephiroth was set up in the forced walking segment early in the game. It also shows the difference between Nomura's and Sakaguchi's writing. It's like Nomura thought "Hmmm, that Spirits Within movie that bankrupted Squaresoft sure looks like something I should add in this game."

I thoroughly enjoyed the remake, but the ghosts and theme of changing destiny have me kind of hesitant to see what comes next. It's hard to say what they're going to do with Aerith and Zack now because frankly all possibilities are on the table. I kinda hope they don't fuck with Aerith's death and keep it in because of how classic a scene it is (plus it would look awesome with the new graphics), but at the same time, I could easily see them doing a fake-out with the ghosts saving her or someone else getting killed off instead. Pretty big gamble overall.

As someone who played and enjoyed the XIII trilogy I've just about had my fill of the whole "time travel to make things right" plotline but I guess they could pull it off in theory. We'll see.

It has been discussed before, but Square was promising a faithful remake for years up until it was no longer a faithful remake and instead became a mess of ideas directed by a man that seemed to completely miss the point of Yoshinori Kitase's original game and instead wanted to make something that was, to quote Tetsuya Nomura: cool.

Pretty much sums up Final Fantasy's slide into mediocrity for me. They are trying to be cool.

At least they can't go back with retcon spirits and ruin the original version of the game. Still plays great!

Took me a minute to find it.
