The Final Fantasy Thread

I even find the stupid laughing scene charming in a cringy way.
That is what the scene was going for, that Tidus and Yuna's laugh is fake-sounding and awkward. Plus the reactions from the other characters ("We thought you gone crazy!") sell that this is supposed to be cringy in the game itself. I get kinda annoyed that people mock it and use it as an example of bad acting when it's literally the point of the scene.

That being said, that mod that replaces the music and Tidus' dialogue with his laugh is hilarious.

Sure, he doesn't have lovably grumpy social awkwardness

I played FFX for the first time last year and I really enjoyed it. I was surprised at how linear it was because I know that’s a complaint leveled at FFXIII constantly, but FFX seems to have avoided such criticism. And I’m not saying that this linearity is a bad thing. I think it worked with what they were trying to do. I also thought the ability to swap in other characters during combat made for one of the best turn based experiences in the franchise.

That was one of the main criticisms, actually.

Look closely: The fans claiming 10 "got a pass" are still butthurt over nobody liking Eclair (or her trilogy).

If I didn't know better I'd say Nojima was planted there by Atlus to sabotage it.

How was this demented fanfic writer allowed onto the premises?
I was confused at first but then I realized that was the guy who made Balan shitland.

I’m linking this as a tribute to the 20th Anniversary of FFX.

I assume it was just down to FFX not having a world map.

None of the prior FF games to that point had been a shining example of open-world design, unless you liked getting murdered by the frogs outside Mysidia in FF2.
Critics single it out for starting the trend of sappy cutscenes over exploration.

AAA games emphasize open worlds: because they sell. Gamers want to choose their own adventure.

You are right about that. Hell, I’m addicted to fallout 4 right now just because I can do whatever I want at any point.

The growing backlash to "open world" has more to do with studios promising an "open world" experience, and then not delivering. Any game claiming to have the "biggest open world ever" pretty much guarantees miles of empty landscape.

In that vein, I don't think people are sick of linear games; they hate it when games try to be movies. Kojima is playing to the crowd by comparing his own work to French and Italian cinema.

I've actually never played a FF game but I recently picked up FFXV Royal Edition. It's by far the biggest game on my hard drive at like 100gb almost. Is it any good, where does it rank among all the FF games?
I haven't played all of them so I can't rank it fairly, but I enjoyed XV and it was generally well-received. That said, there's a lot of content that either got scrapped or didn't make it into the game, so it kind of takes a decline in the latter half and leaves several unanswered questions. It unfortunately had the Mass Effect Andromeda problem of being stuck in developmental hell for years and going through massive rewrites.

Probably not one of the best entries, but it's pretty good for what it ended up being.

I remember being wowed when FFX was announced and they promised voiced cutscenes and I was like "holy shit, they can finally talk?!" (this was before I knew what Metal Gear Solid was) and how real it looked at the time thinking game graphics could not get better than that. And come to think of it, X was probably the game where worldbuilding got weird in the series.

To me, this is the best Final Fantasy game. In terms of narrative structure, worldbuilding, characters, concepts, etc. it just knocks it all out of the fucking park to me. Spira is one of my favorite fictional worlds of all time and while I fear the idea of FFX-3 in a sense (despite liking the setup present in the audio drama with the HD remaster plus a few details from the light novel) if I got to visit it one more time with a modern rendition then I'd love it. The beach where Wakka finds Tidus is the representative map for FFX in Dissidia NT and I thought it was pretty breathtaking the first time I played on it.

Next month there will be a free login month for FFXI. You will not have to have an active subscription to login. I do hope next year for the 20th anniversary they will do it as well.
Anyone having played FFXI there is a website from SE called „we are Vana‘diel“
Wearevanadiel
It has as of now only the interview with Tanaka and some nice official artwork by Amano.
Over time to the process to 20 year anniversary they will add hopefully a lot more.
