The Final Fantasy Thread

I've actually never played a FF game but I recently picked up FFXV Royal Edition. It's by far the biggest game on my hard drive at like 100gb almost. Is it any good, where does it rank among all the FF games?
It’s pretty good, although not one of the best. I can say from what I’ve played that VII and X are far better games. That being said, I hear it’s still much better than final trilogy XIII.

So FF8 is on sale on PSN, is it worth picking up? I've been eyeing it for a while since i'm only familiar with Squall due to Kingdom hearts and the "Squall is dead theory" but outside of that I know nothing.

I recently picked up the original FF7 and so far naming my party weird shit has been one of the best decisions of my life, but i'm still super early in the game. Also watched internet historian's video on it, yea still not a damn clue what I witnessed so i'm still going in the game pretty blind all things considered.

Also dumb question #2. Anyone think in the future we'll get something like a "complete" FF15 or something? Part of me is like "no we won't" since the guy who was the head of it left square, but the other part of me is like "yes it will or something kinda like that" but that just might me being overly optimistic.

I enjoyed it enough to start dabbling in the older games, so I'd say go for it.

I haven't finished 8 yet (I'm at the very end and keep putting it off) but to be honest? No, it's not worth it. The battle system is a horrendous, broken mess and the plot is hard to keep track of. The characters aren't much to write home about either. I really wish I'd done my research before diving into it because it was more frustrating than anything. I'd suggest just looking up a playthrough.

I doubt they'll bother going back to 15. They had their chance to expand on a lot of things with the DLC, but since most of it was thrown out, I think that speaks for itself.

I enjoy FFVIII, but it's a narrative mess and the worldbuilding is too shallow for its own good. I speculated elsewhere that because Titanic was the biggest movie of 1999, this game awkwardly made its love story the main story even though it doesn't have the characters to do so.

Well, look at the bright side. Ignoring the FF13 games, the series only gets better than those games.

From what I hear FFVIII is on the same tier as XII or XV. Good but not fantastic. But hey, take what I say with a grain of salt. I haven’t played it.

There was a rumor going around that Shina is the ancestor of President Shinra, whose family pioneered space and colonized Gaia before the events of 7. That turned out to be a misconception: In an interview, one of the devs working on 10-2 admitted they were trying to craft a new world and ended up with something quite similar to FF7. The Lifestream is still there, for instance.

People turn into fiends if they're not unsent! Unless they're a main character, I guess. Is the Farplane truly the afterlife? Are pyreflies fragments of the soul? It's best not to ask too many questions about this, I guess. It's definitely one of those games that require a GameFAQs or Reddit thread to understand.
It wasn't a misconception, it was based on a joke in FFX-2 where late-game Shinra states that the Farplane could be used as an energy source. People turning into fiends as unsent was only because their spirits would become envious of the living and over time that would turn into bitter rage that twists them. If you're an unsent though with a focused mind you could resist it no problem. If you required a thread for clarification on the lore in FFX I'm tempted to think you didn't pay attention.

Pointing out your inattentiveness to basic lore the game goes out of its way to explain to the player is gatekeeping?

Show me the line of dialog explaining how a disciplined mind can keep shape after death.
Can't really point at one dialogue line but this is demonstrated with Auron, Belgemine, Maester Seymour,
and especially Maester Mika.
Or where Dream Zanarkand exists in Spira.
It exists in the middle of the ocean. Sin destroys anything that comes close to it, and usually anything that strays too far from it.
Or how Sin can travel between the two.
It flies there.
Or why Sin always returns for its spawn.
This is a "it kind of just does" thing, though I feel like it existed for the sake of foreshadowing the true nature of Sin being Jecht.

Yeah no, 8 doesn’t compare to either of those. I’m close enough to the end to confidently say it’s a clusterfuck of a game with possibly the worst battle system I’ve ever come across.

And this is coming from someone who legitimately likes 13. People can rag on it all they want (I’m absolutely not denying the glaring flaws or looking for a debate here), but at least that FF didn’t feel like a chore to me and I generally understood what was going on. I dunno, maybe I’m just autistic. I wanted to like 8 but it fell short in so many ways. More power to those who actually are fans of it.

Lol figured I'd get some dumb ratings

According to Ultimania (which has to be taken with a grain of salt), Sin draw pyreflies out of the atmosphere to recover from damage. Sinpawn are already made from pyreflies. Fetching sinspawn allows it to heal faster.

Huh, that's neat. I was just going by what I felt was demonstrated by the game's narrative.

So why make the MMOs part of numbered franchise anyhow? Is there a particular reason for it? Because I could see a myriad of reasons why having a big numer behind a MMO title with games with even bigger numbers in the same franchise coming out years after its release might scare potential customers away

Well originally FFXI was only supposed to be called FF: Online, but they changed it because they wanted more sales. Because attaching a number to a title makes it look like a big release.

Seems short sighted. People who don't know better are going to be terrified of trying a MMO with freaking 14 in the title, they'll presume it requires prior experience with the 13 past titles to fully get what is going on. Also seeing a MMO that isn't the newest entry in a series is disconcerting for the people who're instinctively afraid that it isn't going to be supported for long.
Perhaps Final Fantasy: Primal or Final Fantasy: Ultima would have been better titles

FF11 and 14 are the two highest-grossing FF games in general, so I think any shortsightedness has been blown past by now.
