Out of Africa still works in that all hominids are ultimately descended from ones that came from Africa Archaic Homo sapiens originated there as well. But anatomically modern Homo sapiens is the result of convergent evolution among multiple hybrids of archaic Homo sapiens and other hominids in Africa, Europe and Asia. And there were almost certainly many migrations out of Africa with different root populations in the first place.

And no one knows why. Something got popularized and can even be found in some highschool and early college biology texts about "all the sperm's mitochondria hang out at the base of the flagellum (true) which falls off before it enters the egg (false)". The father's mitochondria just disappear. It's a mystery.
