Pilpul is simply, "By whatever means necessary" applied to rhetoric. Consistency and logic doesn't matter. Confuse and disorient the target, but more importantly, impress the audience. Chutzpah is a big component of this.

I have heard that as well. But I think it goes beyond that. A kind of supreme confidence where you can make the most ludicrous claims in front of a large audience, and never once show a flicker of self-doubt or shame. But where does this bravery come from?
