The General Thread

I just bought a new (used) keyboard because I'm sick of the increasing numbers of typos my piece of shit Logitech has been giving me and that end up in my posts (and other documents) because I often type blind without even looking at the monitor.

This is some random Jap's channel where he uploads himself farting on his cat. 540 videos over 5 years, almost all of them are like that. Why are people like this? I just wanted to watch funny cat videos.

Is it just me or does this forum have more of an edge now than it did five or six years ago? Things seemed a little... lighter back then. People seemed to be a little more easygoing. Maybe it's me who has lost my edge?
Tbh, the whole internet (in regards to comment sections, forums etc) has felt that way to me lately. I was wondering the same thing - am I getting old or is the internet really getting 'rougher'? Probably a combination of both.

People have grown a bit bitter about being treated as the niggers of the Internet.

Also frankly the recent cows are worse than usual. Many of them were pretty reprehensible even in the old days but now we have a bunch that are just, frankly, outright evil to a degree that isn't even funny.

Yeah people are bitter and cynical and tired of this shit, and so am I.

The world is fucked, our quality of life is being tanked purposefully, there is no good media to distract ourselves with and everything is so dark.

And that includes cows like you said, the lolcows of today are so evil that you often don't come away laughing but with a queasy feeling. In a way lolcows are the image of contemporary society, old cows were more carefree, the current cows are degenerate filth and even they are more miserable than they used to be.

Nobody is happy.

I noticed the same as well. Now it seems like this is just 4chan 2.0. Not that I mind it.
There were too many trannies from what I remember.

In my observation, as a functioning young adult, its a direct reaction to attempts to make public discourse more “cushioned” and “inclusive.” Being told you can’t say retard anymore, make short bus jokes, or laugh at fat people leads to a compounding, growing resentment. The only outlet for those kinds of feelings is the internet. Getting it out in real life usually has direct and dire consequences, especially if you have a career and friend group on the line. I’m a fucking asshole online for this reason.

Also, its the teenagers getting online. I don’t get people younger than me. I grew up online, but I came online when the internet was different. Teenagers these days got thrown off the deep-end into the already enshittified, nihilistic internet. I don’t know what the fuck that does to a person. All I’ll say is that I don’t think the Sharty came out of nothing.

I got on the general thread just to say that there’s something weirdly comforting about being called a nigger by another user. It feels like a pat on the back.

I've only been lurking regularly since 2019, but the forum does seem much more jaded and negative to me than before. It feels a bit like 4chan with very palpable nihilism and hopelessness like @Forsaken Wanderer had just demonstrated. Even terrible, politically-charged events like the Summer of Love, January 6th and the Covid lockdowns were discussed much more lightly and with less serious vitriol than is common in threads nowadays. Similarly, the Unicorn ranch and Fedsmoker threads were jolly good fun while Sterling and Philosophy Tube trooning out was just funny rather than crying about troons destroying everything good in society. The fun isn't all gone though as the Catler saga was recent and just plainly ridiculous.

Mind you, I might just be seeking out the edgy content more often nowadays which paints the site in a bad light for me. Still, I just can't escape the feeling that the userbase is getting weirder in a bad way with just plainly miserable people destroying the vibes. There's a general feeling of embracing negativity rather than laughing at it.

Edit: Expanded on my examples of nice threads from the past.

The Internet is so small and so tightly censored now and it does indeed build resentment. If you have light moderation and treat people like adults then most people will act like one, if you try and micro manage people than it creates a toxic environment that nobody likes. The algorithms often catch you when you try to sneak in words by putting symbols in between them now and other methods you may think of won't work, it's very difficult to speak at all outside of the farms.

I think the farms is made up of two groups -

- age 30+ who are now aware of how dire the situation in every western country is and the weight of it is bringing them down.

- age -30 are people who grew up only knowing the horrid "social media" era and on wards. They have had to avoid groomers on Roblocks, Minecraft, Discord etc, they have seen dark shit everywhere and the media that the youth are into is Analog Horror and their cows are deranged people like Daniel Larson. They have probably not made it out of the last decade unscathed.

Further to this, Josh had been putting on his Lawyer hat a lot this year and he has been wanting people to behave more seriously in case it causes issues in any of his on-going cases. There have also been some rapid sweeping changes. It feels like the farms is moving under your feet.

I think the general feeling of loss and sadness will grow as people continue to witness the world around them crumble away.

I’ve been a lurker since 2017 and I can attest the site culture went through a big shift around the COVID lockdowns, and the past couple years there’s been a lot more anger and vitriol replacing what would have formerly been lighthearted banter and shitposting. I hate to say it, but part of it is the moderatorship. I’ve noticed more posts getting removed for not “being serious”, even though laughter and humor is how people tend to cope with stupid situations and darkness. I miss the site culture of the 2010’s. There’s so much more finger-pointing at different groups than there used to be and it’s created a lot of unnecessary tension. The whole world has changed so much for the worst in many ways and it’s unfortunate that the bitterness has been leeching onto here.

I don't know about that, man. Even with the economic situation deteriorating, I do not see the world crumbling away, especially to a degree that would affect my emotional state. Even after a shitty week at work, I find it difficult to not feel happy when reading in the summer sun and enjoying the lemon tartelette that I got from the bakery. Mind you, the book was recommended to me by a Kiwi Farms user and I am thoroughly enjoying it. I'm not starving, I live in a modest home and my peers forgive my mistakes. Even if my success is not absolute, I cannot fault the world for it.

The feelings of loss and sadness seem to become amplified by Internet use and it concerns me that Kiwi Farms is contributing towards that instead of curing it with laughter. Once that misery sets it, you will never remove it.

General Tso’s chicken versus Colonel Sanders Kentucky fried chicken? Who would win
The General wins every time unless you're talking about the original KFC before they went woke and quit even calling it fried chicken. It was actually good (at least some places) up until the point they stopped calling it Kentucky Fried Chicken.

In fact, the Colonel actually sued them for defiling his recipe at one point.

@Cherry Eyed Hamster I think most of the jannies are okay but I have also noticed that things are getting stricter and it's easier to get yelled at for minor things which creates a bad atmosphere. It's also not good to split the forum up into multiple groups and then create reasons for them to fight, detractor vs non detractor, sticker lover vs not sticker lover, rackets shit poster vs rackets lawyer poster and so on. Also that bastard that thread bans people from the Anti Vax thread for not laughing at "anti vaxxers" is out of control.

I can understand that and when I have one of those moments I can feel the pain wash away as well. In the weekends I sat outside in the sun with the cats and a beer and it was easy to forget all the woes and ills in the world.

The problem I think is the geographic location of the farmers. If a farmer is in a 100% white rural town then they can forget about global events and be happy, if they are in a rural town that is rapidly becoming brown or in a city then they are more likely to be miserable. If every time you go outside to relax you hear some Dindu rap music then you won't enjoy yourself much.

Country Fried Chicken is better, it's fish n chip shop quality rather than Mcdonald's quality.
