The Ghostbusters Thread (Old, New, Animated, Whatever)

honestly the new gb was always going to be a bad idea because kids today will go "what the fuck is ghostbuster" and not care

old people will go "melissa mccarthy is no bill murray" and not care (tho i liked her in spy and think she's not bad comedian at all)

fans will go "FUUUUUUU WHY ARE THINGS DIFFERENT" and pay to see but then bitch about it, discouraging others

so only 2 groups will care: tumblr (who will probably pirate it because they can't find anyone interested in going with them - and then complain when it fails to represent non-binary micronesian people) and clueless movie reviewers who will jizz in their pants about how progressive and forward they are for getting paid to promote a movie.

star wars worked out because it had a 2 billion dollar ad budget to tell the kids why dad is so hyped about the space movie and they got the original cast to play a fairly large role. so it did a good job of appealing to everyone, even if the plot was just a rehash.

Did anyone else giggle at how blatantly racist the black character is? She looks and talks like something out of /pol/'s nightmares. I thought the whole point of this film was to lick the assholes of sjws and then they put this shit in?

Fat and sassy is how tumblr draws black women, so what's the problem? It's only as racist as SJWs are.

That really cries out that they have absolutely nothing going for them but SJW bullshit. Did they realize they had a stinker on their hands and look for some cynical marketing ploy in a desperate attempt to get a decent opening weekend?

Preemptively screaming at the audience that they're misogynists literally raping women by not liking the trailer is pretty pathetic.

Manufactured outrage and controversy are money generators, and nothing stirs up outrage than poking the autistic hugbox that passes for feminism these days.

Well, I wish them luck if they think screaming rape is going to get people to watch a movie that looks like shit.

The thing is, Star Wars has always had a multi-generational draw. From 1977 onwards, there was always something Star Wars related. Gen X got the first movies, Milineals got the prequels and more recently they had the TV series and now the new movies. On top of this, there has been an onslaught of comics, books and video games going back all the way to the beginning until now. Fuck, I can't remember in the 30 years I have been alive that there were not Star Wars toys in the toy aisle. Ghostbusters died in the early 90's, with only one sad attempt to revive it (Extreme Ghostbusters). The only appeal will be to Gen X'ers and older Millineals. Even then, most of them won't want to see it anyways. That is the movies biggest problem.

Let's not forget that there hasn't been a good/decent Star Wars film since "Jedi". That was a pretty damn good reason why it made as much as it did too.

With this, I keep asking "Outside of the fans, who's really asking for a new Ghostbusters film?"

So... who wants to bet the villain or at least a minor antagonist is going to be a straw misogynist that's all but a gamergater?

Heck, we haven't seen a Walter Peck yet. Just replace dickless whining about the environment with a neckbeard ranting about how "GIRLS CAN'T BUST GHOSTS!" Might as well at this point.

The international trailer is up. Make of it what you will.

Well...the Janine stand-in actually got to say something, more of the plot was revealed and they corrected "scientists" to "friends". But now they're just showing off more soggy knees and a different race-related joke with Jones's character.

Yeah, that was...really something. Leslie Jones has aggressively pursued race- and gender-stereotype-based cringe laughs in her stand-up for like 25 years. When she made the switch from playing what she has called "shitty chitlin-circuit-ass rooms" to more lucrative and prestigious bookings in front of white audiences, she seems to have captured an Archie Bunker fanbase who is not laughing with her at the painful absurdity of racial stereotypes, but is unironically entertained by racist jokes.

Especially given Hollywood's - ahem - fraught history with black people and ghosts, Jones was a bad casting decision if this was not supposed to be a racist shitshow. People who are crying because her Ghostbusters character is an MTA worker and not a scientist are retarded.

Personally, I'm genuinely disappointed by the absence of practical effects. This is a movie I'll probably watch on an airplane someday, not something I'd pay money to see.

I love that this trailer seems tailor-made to address all the legit critiques that people had. For example, replacing "Four scientists" with "Four friends" after everyone called them out on how that wasn't accurate to the first movie.

Still looks like garbage. I'm amazed that one could make a less funny Ghostbusters movie than II, but by God Hollywood continues to surprise me.

Winston was your basic guy who needed work and was willing to do anything a job needed. He didn't claim to be a guide or street smart or anything like that. He was just a blue collar guy willing to put up with anything for steady employment. He was originally supposed to be a scientist/marine but they nixed that idea.

Here's how Winston became a Ghostbuster for comparison.

That shit just works better. Quick, funny, and serves it's purpose.

Honestly, I don't care about the new Ghostbusters. If it isn't funny and bombs then it'll just be forgotten. I'm just looking forward to the internet salt though. When this drops in July we're all going to be called MRAs or SJWs for liking or disliking the movie and it's gun b gewd. It's just the first trailer and already people are being called sexist for not liking it.

I can't help remembering this old internet fanfilm someone made of another branch of the GB (I think it was in Detroit) that had Egon's nephew and this two friends don the proton packs. It involved a haunted mattress that contained Freddy Krueger's spirit and he could come out and kill anyone who slept on it. I wish I could find the video because it would make for a more fun film. They also wanted to make a sequel where someone is using the ghost traps to suck in people's souls to sacrifice them in an ancient Egyptian ritual.
