The Godzilla Thread - Plus other giant monsters, no matter how popular or obscure

I've always found the Godzilla fanbase to be rather wholesome. Yeah, you'll get the occasional squabble about which monsters or which series were better, but for the most part it's just memes and cooing over cutesy kaiju moments. Definitely not toxic in my book. I'd rather have a bunch of spergs discussing who would win in a fight over a bunch of bean-mouth shit any day.

I will finally preorder tickets when they are available for Godzilla vs. King Kong and see that shit in IMAX as that is the only way to see two giant CGI behemoths pulverize the fuck out of each and everything around them.

Of course this will bomb in the theater as no one is ever going to the movies again which is sad, and the whole Monster Universe will die with a whimper...

That's one thing I've always loved about the series. No matter what tone they go for (silly and cartoony or serious and dark), they almost always manage to give these massive beasts personalities.

The Mama MUTO's sadness over the nest being blown up and starring down Ford as if to say "IT WAS YOU!" was another great moment to me.

To me the giant monster fanbase is in this nice little sweet spot culturally where it hasn't gone completely mainstream which keeps corporations from shitting it up through flanderization or wokeshit. Yet is not too niche where it would be considered a dead or dying fanbase that would not be really worth your time.

Also your all forgetting the one power that Kong has over Godzilla.

What is everyone's favorite Godzilla film?

Mine is Vs. Destroyah. It was one of those movies that hit every note for me. I really liked how the movie dipped into horror near the beginning when Destroyah was a microscopic lifeforms picking off fish, and then turned into its aggregate form and started picking off humans. I also think it has one of the most compelling human stories of the series (since Dr. Serizawa's sacrifice) in Miki Saegusa. She had been in the previous five Heisei movies, getting a bigger part of the story in Space Godzilla and this film. I was very happy to see her plot resolution with Godzilla Jr at the end. Then there were the very tragic moments involving Godzilla, and those broke my heart because I've been a fan of Godzilla since I was a very young boy. As gay as it is to say, the last 30 or so minutes of that movie make me tear up everytime I watch it, and I've seen the movie at least a dozen times.

It may be no surprise that my favorite villain monster is Destroyah. It was such a perfect match against Godzilla, and his design of his final form is one of my favorite designs of all time. It's like the devil in kaiju form.

It's an interesting choice but my favorite showa is Ebirah: horror of the deep lol. Don't get me wrong I absolutely love gojira like the rest but I enjoy how ebirah was just the right amount of crazy and with the dub it gave the movie surfer vibes. Aslo interestingly this was the last showa film where godzilla was still a "bad guy" or at the very least an anti-hero.

My favorite heisei usually comes between The return and Biollante. Both are solid films and for all its goofiness 84 is my favorite suit.

I say with the exception of megaguirus the the first string of films are great (2000, GMK, GxMG)

So now comes another question. What are some of your favorite non ifukube scores?

I think second to none definitely goes to Michiru Oshima and her original godzilla theme from GvsMGuirus a theme so nice she came back and reused it for the kiryu saga.




Gmk is a banger as well!

Not including the 1954 original, my favorite would have to be GMK. I just like the spiritual aspect that was given for Godzilla (him being comprised of the souls of Japan's victims during WWII was quite bold given how the atrocities have been tiptoed around for decades in Japanese media). He was the Big Bad and presented as such with having the other monsters small in size, which includes King Ghidorah since this looks to be only time he has been depicted in a heroic manner. Despite the dated CGI it is still a blast for me and I always seem to get goosebumps when the score plays in the final scene.

It's fantastic. In terms of Godzilla themes, my baby brother hums Oshima's theme the most, weirdly enough, though that might be because the Millennium films were the ones he watched the most before he moved on to the Showa-era films. I think she was a wonderful choice, though I wonder if her composing for the Millennium films is why she was hired to write the music for Fullmetal Alchemist? Never could figure out the timeline for it.

Showa: Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster besides the original film. Chose to watch it subbed which might've actually helped, but I think even dubbed I would've still loved it. The way Ghidorah comes out of the asteroid after being in hibernation for millennia was pretty cool. Although I guess it's kinda amusing that he spent so much energy on Venus that he had to hitchhike on an asteroid to crash onto Earth and sleep it off.

Heisei: Hnnnnngh--Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth like holds sentimental value to me. I honestly couldn't tell you why, I just watched it a lot growing up even though I know I saw Godzilla vs Mothra prior to that film since my dad had a few VHS tapes before the '98 Godzilla movie came out. It's why Mothra is my favorite besides Godzilla himself, but Battra was always a favorite one-off kaiju. He's just so cool, I'd love to see him again. But that film (both films, really, but this one in particular) is also why it is I wished I had a sister growing up so I could do a proper duet for "Mothra's Song", "Mahara Mothra" and "Sacred Springs". It's a secret dream of mine.

Millennium: GMK or Tokyo S.O.S., I'm honestly having a hard time deciding which I like more. With exception of Tokyo S.O.S. (eh), I'm glad they decided to have the movies be their own self-contained stories to give themselves more leeway. Shame as an era that it's pretty short like the Heisei era, but they sure put their all into making sure the films looked good (for the time now that the CGI has aged lol).

Reiwa: Besides the Monsterverse being good watches, Shin Godzilla is a hard one to top, for sure. Here's to hoping the World of Godzilla series is good fun.

I absolutely agree. Oshima hit it out of the park with her scores, and her theme for Godzilla is a high mark worthy of Ifukube.

I'd also like to throw a ton of praise towards Bear McCreary, who did a fantastic job with his score for 2019's KOTM. Awesome tracks all the way through that also included some of the classic movie themes for Godzilla and Mothra that we know and love. His theme for Ghidorah is particularly great.

Showa: Outside of the first which is a masterpiece, I'd say Mothra vs. Godzilla. The Godzilla suit is one of my favorite and the destruction scenes are pretty fun. In one scene I'm pretty sure the actor in the suit tripped and fell and destroyed the castle by accident and they had no choice but to leave it in due to budget reasons. The fight with Mothra is pretty good and the ending where the Mothra larvae defeat Godzilla by spraying him with silly string is hilarious. A nice blend of drama and goofiness.

Heisei: Going with the predictable, but Biolante. Unique monster and introduced an interesting plotline with Sayaka Miki being able to telepathically communicate with Godzilla.

Millennium: Either GMK because its the best written of the Millennium films and has some good human drama along with a unique take on Godzilla and some good monster fights, or Tokyo S.O.S. because the whole ending half of it was pretty much a non-stop fight as ridiculous as it got at times.

Reiwa: Shin but thats kinda cheating as its the only one released so far unless you count the animes they released. First half of Shin is great but after Godzilla goes apeshit on Tokyo with his atomic breath it kinda drags until the end. Also enjoyed how every location and military vehicle got a subtitle introducing it. Don't know if that was the actions of the people writing the subtitles or Annos autism for military stuff.

American: KOTM. Its the only American Godzilla movie that feels like a Godzilla movie and is proud to be a Godzilla movie. 98 should have been its own thing and 2014 at times felt like a generic disaster movie instead of a monster movie. Also 2014 needed a lot more Bryan Cranston though it at least made Godzilla into a force of nature every time he showed up. KOTM has its problems with a weak script and weak characters, but the monster fights were great, the monsters themselves were fun to watch, and it embraced the cheesiness of the series with stuff like lost underwater cities and crazy superweapons.
