The Godzilla Thread - Plus other giant monsters, no matter how popular or obscure

I honestly don't wanna get my hopes up since we don't know if more movies or material of the Monsterverse will be made, but I legit think Gigan could be next, if not Destoroyah.

I must say I would more likely see them making something different. Something that can: regenerate from a smallest bit of it's body, thrive in any environment (water, land, air), is corrosive to touch and can poison large populated areas by it's presence alone:

Beats a big rose \ crocodile, doesn't it? :)
And it would be a nice tribute to late Yoshimitsu Banno who kickstarted Monsterverse.
It seems that when the MonsterVerse was being put together, it would include the main five of Toho (Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, Ghidorah, and MG) and Kong while new monsters would be made. Since Ghidorah was revealed to be a space monster, that could open the door for space invaders like Gigan or Hedorah. With the latter pollution could still play a part in Hedorah's creation if Godzilla ordering the other Titans to go dormant (which is what Godzilla Dominion explains why they are not present in GvK) while he was searching for the last remnant of Ghidorah had an adverse effect on the planet.

As for Destoroyah, I personally would like to see his creation to be similar to what was done in the Heisei series. So far all the monsters that have appeared have been ancient species with most being the size of people. But what if there was ancient species that was on the bottom of the food chain and when the Oxygen Destroyer was detonated in KOTM, this prey animal began to mutate and would become a new threat to Godzilla and Kong?

With Gigan they'd have to introduce some aliens. Gigan is clearly a cyborg so someone had to build him

I liked anime Hedorah's origin as a bio-weapon. Or possibly something created to reduce pollution that later turns against it's creators.

Problem is there is no Oxygen Destroyer incident in the Monsterverse so it would be harder to link Destroyah's origins to Godzilla.

The Oxygen Destroyer was detonated in KOTM, and in the Heisei era, Destoroyah had been mutating since 1954 when the first Godzilla was killed that way. It took decades for that to happen, though, but modern technology could make Destoroyah mutate faster.

After watching the Godzilla vs. Kong film and then recalling KOTM. I think I personally preferred KOTM more over Gvs.K.
You have the main 4 Godzilla monsters there, Mothra, Rodan, King Ghidorah, and big green mean Godzilla himself. You have the original Godzilla music piece playing while Godzilla goes nuclear, King Ghidorah's reveal was epic, better fights since it was chalked full of it, etc.

Godzilla vs. Kong was alright, I wished for more fighting between the two had happened. I was satisfied with the fact that Godzilla basically was beasting the whole time, and Kong would lose the fight. The MechaGodzilla reveal was mid, was hoping for a bigger reveal out of it, or it was gonna be MechaKing Ghidorah, but it was fine.

Wish they would just drop these semi-plots with kids or adults. No one cares about someone losing their son, it doesn't make us grow any attachments toward them. If anything, they should be looking to make the humans blank slates and only be there to represent humanity as a whole, rather than individuals and try to make something of it.

Overall, nice fight scenes, epic films if you're interested in only those parts.

If the MonsterVerse continues with Toho monsters included, here's a shortlist of good choices to come back:

From Showa:
1) Anguirus = Godzilla's best buddy and sidekick!
2) Gigan = One of Big G's greatest and most unique foes from the Showa period.
3) Baragon = Bit of a fan favorite with the ladies because he's "cute" but he's also a cool little guy too.
4) Gorosaurus = I'm probably the only GSaur fan on the planet...please let me have him and his Kangaroo Kick!
5) Hedorah = Its like The Blob if it was a Captain Planet villain. Lets do it!

From Heisei:
1) Biollante = Has never made a comeback on film and it'd be awesome to have her back.
2) Mecha Ghidorah = They've already kind of set it up, so....lets do it!
3) Battra = The Yin to Mothra's Yang
4) Spacegodzilla = A ridiculous premise for an antagonistic monster, but also a really fun one, haha.
5) Destroyah = He looks like the damn devil and has a cool evolution process too.

From Outside Godzilla Series:
1) Gamera = If they could pull that off....Christ! And why stop at Gamera? He has his own group of monsters to choose from: Gyaos, Barugon, Guiron, Legion, Irys...
2) The Gargantuas = Toho's greatest monsters that never properly crossed over into the Godzilla film series. It'd be nice to see.
3) Daimajin = A giant stone statue god might be a bit much for people, but I'd love it.
4) Rhedosaurus = WB owns this, right? It'd be nice to see a nod to the master of stop motion, Ray Harryhausen, and this monster was the spiritual inspiration for Godzilla, so it'd be cool to get the nod.
5) Ultraman = I mean...Christ! How sick would that be?
6) Yonggary or Gorgo = Get one of the international Godzilla inspired monsters too!

Look, all I'm saying is, they got plenty of options.

Many of the original Kaiju they created seemed to have been relegated to comics so far, (still waiting for a torrent or online version of Godzilla dominion to read). So I don't think if a new movie is made its gonna be one with original kaiju/titan. They would bring an old monster back for the hype or just because it would probably sell better.

I'm all for creating new monsters too. As a kid, part of the appeal of these movies was "What crazy thing is Godzilla going to fight next?" and that is lost if you just bring back the classics over and over again. I mean, I remember the first times I watched Godzilla Vs. The Smog Monster, Godzilla Vs. Gigan, and the original Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla, and I was hooked the minute I saw the title and the box art. It was like "Say no more, I'm in".

Its always cool to have the classics come back like Ghidorah, Mothra, and the like, but I honestly liked some of the MonsterVerse creations like the MUTOs and the Skullcrawlers too. And some of the side monsters in KOTM, like Behemoth, made me go "I'd like to see more of them".

EDIT:

Has anybody seen this?

Aw, that's real bittersweet. It's either a farewell, or they got something up their sleeve. Apparently #ContinueTheMonsterverse has been trending on Twitter from what my brothers said, and the movies have been top hits on HBO Max, so it's possible Legendary is stoked to make more, but ultimately Toho has the final say.

Also this is something I wish more theaters would've done in their seating.

Picking a side, yo.

Problem I have with MUTOs is how generic they felt. It's pretty much Cloverfield monster with some insectoid features. Those monsters from the 70s like Gigan or Hedorah were probably some of the most original and unique in the series and I would really like to see something as wild as them in the Monsterverse. Background Titans in KotM don't fill me with confidence in this regard.

In all fairness, they were designing the MUTOs literally up to the very last minute and had honest struggles figuring out how to make an original kaiju while keeping them down-to-earth. I like the idea of sexual dimorphism in a kaiju species which I don't believe was ever explored (outside of Mothra and Mothra Leo--don't know if Battra can really count), and making them natural enemies to Godzilla by leeching off the radiation and using EMP was pretty cool. Their interactions I think helped kept them from being terrible monsters, but supplementary material (where it was clear they had more time to work on designs and concepts) showed the female of the species can go through metamorphosis and become legit threats to other kaiju like the parasites they are.

So while I wouldn't say the MUTOs are a favorite of mine, I think they've deserved their place in the Monsterverse. Of the more original kaiju, Scylla's my favorite but that's just 'cause I really like cephalopods and she looks like an arachnid nautilus. And despite slowing down the melting polar ice caps, she's a noted destroyer class because she can poison the water with a bacteria she processes naturally while feeding on carcasses. She was also pretty aggressive in Dominion, was great seeing her wrangle with Godzilla for a bit.

Well, leeching was already done by Orga and Keizer Ghidorah but true, the closest we got to Godzilla's natural enemy was in Raids Again, so that's a cool concept.

Sure they do. At least they aren't in the "giant animal" territory like Ebirah or Kamacuras.

I like the lovecraftian feel she has.

I'm surprised the Monsterverse writers haven't had a single "alien invaders use giant monster to fight Godzilla" plot yet.
Has anybody seen this?
Well if this is the end of the Monsterverse, at least it went out a pretty high note. And at least we have the upcoming Shin Ultraman movie... that's been delayed indefinitely... and the Ultra Series in general has been through some controversy thanks to some editing choices from a clip show series... but we still have Kamen Rider and Super Sentai, right?

Got to say im hooked on Godzilla Singular point. I'm really curious about the mystery surrounding the monsters in the show, Also the characters are likable. This seems like a big upgrade from the animated Godzilla movies plot wise. I get strong Shin Godzilla vibes from the Kaiju regarding their origin/biology.

Caved and started Singular Point even though I'd like to watch it with my baby brother on Netflix. Oh yeah, this is great. Building up to a great mystery and potentially new kaiju every week, too. Art is really good, the CGI is probably the best I've seen in a TV production, and the OP slaps. I also love the idea of the kaiju being attracted to radio waves, like that is so cool. Possible it might just be the Rodan species at the end of it all, but nah, radio waves for all sounds neat.

Next week: Titanosaurus.

Quick things I wanna note:
1618521031802.png

Whoever was subbing the second episode thought they were being cute about translating "Taihen" to this. C'mon, man.

I want that Mothra hat, it's so cute. Hell, seeing all those monsters in the end credits is making me hopeful we will see them in the show at some point, but I kinda feel like it's mainly going to be Showa-era (though I dunno if Hedorah will show like in the credits), so Biollante and Shockirus are probably a no-go.

And was it just me, or did this look like N.I.G.E.L.?

Saw it in theater last weekend and it was everything I hoped for and just like I predicted as dictated by pro wrestling logic Godzilla got his win back. It doesn't topple KOTM but for me it's an unfair comparison because kotm holds a special place in my heart as my first ever theatrical Godzilla film. I'm sad that the monsterverse might be ending but if nothing else it ends on a high note for me
