The Godzilla Thread - Plus other giant monsters, no matter how popular or obscure

I'm gonna have to chew on this a bit longer, but honestly, good to know the Japanese are becoming more ballsy at criticizing their government to the point of outright saying they're useless and only the people can step in to do something.

But legit, probably the scariest Godzilla to date, and Shin Godzilla was already horrifying.

I quite liked the human drama. A lot. A lot of the times it falls into either "Hey, that's pretty compelling human shit for Godzilla" or "At least it didn't get in the way of the monster action." But here I found Shikishima and his makeshift family really compelling and I enjoyed the rest of his boat's crew. I wish it had a bit more of that almost Jaws-esque vibe before things got a bit bigger in scale, but I still enjoyed the monster action. I liked the detail on Godzilla's design this time around. Overall, the movie wasn't what I expected. In a good way.

I'd give it an 8/10.

Oh yeah, the sound was so loud, it's like they just wanna bust out the speakers so fast. I don't remember Shin Godzilla being that loud in the theater. Modern Hollywood and its consequences have been disastrous for the cinematic experience.

I still need to sit down to watch Monarch. Is it gonna be needed to get what's going on in the new movie, or is it just more-or-less extra fun information?

Currently, the season is set between Godzilla 2014 and KOTM. Unless something happens later, it's extra fun information.

My experience with Minus One is much like previous posters. It was a perfectly balanced with the character drama, the monster action, and the bits of humor that were not out of place. The score was incredible especially when the main Godzilla theme was used. All the characters were likable and it was nice to see ones who were initially antagonistic to Shikishima had arcs themselves (the neighbor and Tachibana, the main engineer). Given we are burned out on Western media that puts identity politics in period pieces, it was particularly nice to show Japan's culture changing after the war without being preachy. Shikishima and Noriko were not shunned for raising Akiko despite neither of them being her biological parents and they were not married themselves. And Noriko didn't go on a feminist lecture when she got herself a job.
I am torn when it was revealed that Noriko survived Godzilla's attack on Ginza. On the one hand, it was nice happy ending for both of them along with Akiko since the Japanese Godzilla movies tend to have a main character couple make it to the end. On the other hand, it cheapens her sacrifice and the third act when it comes to Shikishima. He is ready to give his life for Akiko only to learn his plane has a ejection seat and Tachibana tells him to move past his guilt and live. Also, lasting shot on Noriko in the hospital reminded me of how Shin Godzilla ended with showing humanoid creatures coming out of Godzilla's tail as it possibly hints that she could become a hybrid monster in a hypothetical sequel. I'm not sure if Toho will make a second installment to this continuity or have it be one and done. This would not be a new thing as some films in the Millennium series had sequel or post-credit teases that were not followed up (Megaguirus, GMK, and Tokyo S.O.S.) and you can also include Shin.
Ya those purple spines are totally millenium era throwbacks. This had better have Rodan and Mothra on the assist or at least some other titans helping out Godzilla and Kong or I'm gonna be super disappointed.
Unfortunately, I think Toho loaned their other recognizable monsters for only one appearance in the MonsterVerse (which is why you saw Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah in KOTM and MechaGodzilla in GvK). You probably will only see new incarnations of them if they are featured in a Toho production.

iirc as-of KOTM somebody from Legendary said in an interview that it's strictly a pay-per-use budget thing, they paid a specific amount for each monster, so it's more a matter of shelling out for each monster they use rather than Toho being too picky about them appearing
granted KOTM was a while ago and there's been some successful Godzilla movies in Japan since then so Toho may have rethought their plans too
underground civilzation's got me thinking Megalon or Manda

I would have been totally down for a Godzilla X Kong being a Godzilla vs. Megalon remake. Have Kong battle Megalon underground while Godzilla battles Gigan on the surface leading to the tag team bout at the end and Monarch making Jet Jaguar or something. Shit would have been dimes I tell you.

Dude just give me fucking MechaniKong!

Oh my god I am so happy the people making these movies legitimately love Godzilla in his entirety and keep throwing in a schmorgasboard of references to every continuity (2022 had the long mouth like the 62' suit and the white eyes from GMK) I don't even really like the purple spikes from 2000 but I'm glad they're getting their chance to shine.
It's honestly one of the only franchises modern Hollywood has adapted that has been faithful and made out of love for the originals without any of the usual bs nowadays.

I think we're in the best timeline for Godzilla considering if I want Showa-era beatem ups I can go to Hollywood and if I want serious, somber standalone movies, I can go with the Japs. There's really nothing to complain about. We're getting some of the best Godzilla movies ever made within 10 years of eachother.

Good film with good story.

The subtext about Japanese remilitarization, that stood out a lot, though. I guess the popular opinion has turned against their Article 9.

Interesting to see all that Imperial Japanese military hardware in a film, even if it's all CGI.

We got a new trailer for Godzilla X Kong
Godzilla has pink spines now for some reason. Might be a reference to Godzilla 2000
Godzilla should not move that fast

The one thing I don't like about the Monsterverse is that the heft of the monsters keeps decreasing to where every monster is basically equal in speed and agility

Kong and the Skull Island and Hollow Earth monsters, okay, they're a bit smaller

2014 Godzilla and the female MUTO are the only big monsters that have felt like they have the appropriate heft to me. KOTM Godzilla, GvK Godzilla, Ghidorah and Mecha-Godzilla should not be bounding around and moving like they are hollow themselves or something. They're not capeshit characters and shouldn't be fighting this non-stop swift fluid capeshit style

The ending of the trailer with Godzilla running alongside Kong made me laugh. I don't know why but my mind instantly went to buddy cop movie shit. It feels so weird seeing this kind of trailer for Godzilla now after all the Minus One stuff. It's such a contrast my mind wasn't ready for the goofiness of Monsterverse Godzilla so fast after Minus One.

How long til we get to the a modern Destroy All Monsters which would also feature Rodan, Mothra, GIdorah, as well as American Zilla, Jet Jaguar and Mighty Joe Young?

I finally finished Gamera Rebirth. I was not prepared for how anime it was going to be. They got the monsters right, though. Gamera takes a licking and keeps on ticking. He probably gets the shit kicked out of him more than any other kaiju, across every series and era. The path of the giant turtle monster is lonely and difficult but he always gets it done in the end.
