I think the reason it's gotten acclaim is a mixture of factors.
Shekel is kind of right, even though he's being a faggot about it.
The standards for what makes a great film have fallen so low that anything even decent is going to be film of the decade.
But I said it before and I'll say it again:
I think what made Minus One so beloved is it represented something. It's a Godzilla movie made on a fraction of a budget of anything Hollywood has done in the last twenty years, that has heart, soul and is really damn beautifully made. I agree that if this was any other time it would have been still a good film but nothing insane. But the fact a Godzilla movie of all things became a bigger commercial and critical success than most american films that year was something that meant something.
I'm not saying Minus One "ended" current Hollywood, but it was kind of the moment where everyone had to acknowledge the emperor had no clothes.
When more everyday normal people are going to see the radioactive lizard movie from a franchise that was for the most part only associated with the kind of people who liked trains a couple years prior and enjoying it to some stale capeshit or butchered IP reboot, it's kind of a sign things are changing.

I enjoyed Godzilla Minus One. Some plot points felt contrived, and I think, could have done without the very last shot. Godzilla's introduction comes too quickly and characters figure a couple things out too easily in my opinion. Still a good movie overall and much prefer it over Shin. Unlike most godzilla movies, this one feels like a real film.

The only part I actually didn't like was the ending. I'm all for Koichi getting his happy ending, but they should've set it up better. Noriko surviving getting shredded by debris after Godzilla's Atomic (bomb) Breath is retarded, though I have to wonder if it's trying to set up some Biollante hints or something the black veins on her neck. Or if it's because of these black veins (G-cells probably) that allowed Noriko to survive due to seeing Godzilla start to regenerate right after. Seeing Japan stick to the more serious aspects of Godzilla like Shin and Minus One while also keeping the goofiness in the case of Chibi Godzilla (fuck that thing is so adorable) is just great. Especially compared to the Legendary Pictures movies...especially the latest one. That's not to say Japan only makes good Godzilla related things and everywhere else is shit, I still remember that Godzilla anime movie trilogy, how dogshit do you have to be to make the setup (this is just a basic timeline, there's a narrative to it but I'm too lazy to find it) to the movies far more interesting than the movies themselves? America and other non-Japanese places made some good shit as well, like comics such as Rulers of Earth, Godzilla in Hell, Dark Horse's comics. And how can I not mention this masterpiece?

Something interesting I found, there's a Novelization of Minus One. I can't find it on any official website but there's several on Ebay. There's some interesting differences between the movie, some I think were to add more details and to fill any plot holes, but one I particularly found interesting is this:
In Ginza, Godzilla does not roar up at the mushroom cloud resulting from his atomic breath and instead stands still for a moment before moving onward.

I remember when DAM came out the reviews were basically "This game is mostly a bald-faced ripoff of the old Neo Geo game King Of The Monsters, but with the Godzilla license. This game is mostly fucking great"

I would say it was a fully realized King of the Monsters.

Games back then were just ripping off and refining shit *cracks open a zero cal monster*. They were better back then *siiiiiiiiip*.

Destroy All Monsters and The LoTR rings movie tie in game were what I played more than anything else.

Not really that much like King of the Monsters, especially when you put it by Godzilla Domination, which is EXACTLY like King of the Monsters, except better tbh.

Also, furthermore, there's a fan mod called Godzilla: Save the Earth Melee that's trying to put more stuff into Save the Earth.

And... possible remaster?

If there was a Godzilla video game I would want, it would be a revamp of Godzilla: Monster of Monsters on NES that fixes all the issues and maximizes the potential of the game.

  • Keep the chessboard/map system that you take your monsters across, but make the level selection different enough to encourage exploration. Say some levels give you items, unlock more playable monsters, give you XP points to level up, unlock short cuts to different stages...all sorts of things. The game as is, you move around the board playing levels that mostly look the same, so your best bet is to use find the shortest path to the goal because there is no reason to do anything else. Well, lets make it so that both exploration and quick smash and dash are viable.
  • Expanding on variety of the levels, the different worlds need to be different too. In the old game, it was all the planets with maybe predominant features (plant-life, fire, etc.) but ultimately, they all kind of felt the same. In a new game, give us different areas that are familiar locales for fans. Tokyo of course, Monster Island is a must, Planet X, New York, the Pacific Ocean would be a good one...lots of options.
  • I talked about this, but expand the roster. In the old game, the only playable monsters were Godzilla and Mothra. Rodan and Anguirus sprites were in the source code, but ultimately not utilized, but there are a ton of allies and good monsters to build up Godzilla's team and have fun with. Say you enter each new stage with a team of three monsters you can pick and depending on the predominant environment, it becomes advantagious to go with certain monsters. If its mostly fire levels, then Rodan is a must have. If its mostly water levels, Godzilla is your guy. Things like that.
  • Cut out the repetitiveness of the game. One of the biggest killers of the MoM was having to fight every single boss monster again so that every new level just had the same roster of bad boss monsters but with one more added. I gotta tell ya, fighting Gezora 9 times back in the day was pretty tedious. I say, keep it to 3-5 bosses per level, and then on the last level, do a big Destroy All Monsters-style free for all where you take your team against everybody.
Monster of Monsters is one of those games that is super frustrating because I feel like there is a fantastic game in there, but what we got did not maximize the potential at all. What I'm hoping for here is merely a pipedream, but if it ever happened, I'd be happy.

Japan just had their Godzilla Day stream. It was interesting:
  • If you're a gachafag that's playing Godzilla Line Battle, Showa Gamera and Gyaos are going to be in the game through a collab. Gigan Rex will also be added to the game.
  • Good news: We finally got a Gabara figure in the Movie Monster line, and there's also figure of Kamakiras from Son of Godzilla. Bad news: They're in a fomo collection box with 3 other figures that kinda suck (Ghidorah 72, Anguilas 72, and Mechagodzilla 72), and the Kamakiras looks very eh. Said fomo is around $120+ usd, so have fun getting this from Buyee.
  • We might get a giant condor figure from the movie monster line after Japanese and US fans voted for the next figure.
  • They showed the last Godzilla short that wraps up Godzilla and Jet Jaguar vs. King Ghidorah. It was pretty good, and they're releasing a DVD that might have all of the shorts spare G vs. Megalon for some reason.
It was ok but it could have been better. During the Line Battle segment, they brought Yumiko Saku from Godzilla SOS to play against some of the crowd and a top player, but while the top player lost to Yumiko most of the audience stomped on her with their whale teams (it was so bad they grabbed some kid who lost to her because he couldn't do much). Anyone who tried to spam "PAY TO WIN" or whined about the segment got silenced because nobody liked it. Some autist kept reeeing about Shin Godzilla sucking ass in that game.

Apparently there was vote amongst the Japanese and US fans for the next Movie Monster Series figure Everyone at G Day was surprised to see Giant Condor win the vote, and they were more surprised more Americans voted than the Japanese (there was a vote for Varan and Gorosaurus years ago). Other choices were Myserians Moguera, King Ceasar with Ears Up, Desghidorah, Eternal Mothra, Orga, Rodan, Dorat, Space Godzilla Crystal Form, and Mecha Godzilla without the head. Ngl, these choices kind of suck out of Orga, Deshghidorah, and Moguera. As for the fomo box, I don't think I'm forking $200usd for Gabara because the rest of the figures in that box suck. I don't need 3+ varieties of Anguirus even though he's one of my favorites. I do wanna grab Red Bagan (reminds me of Yasushi Nirasawa's concept art for Bagan), Jumping Godzilla, and Condor unless it looks like shit.

Nothing about the upcoming movie sadly. The new short was pretty good (RIP Jet Jaguar :( ).

At the end of the stream, they had a more detailed behind the scenes with a talking Godzilla figure explaining everything. It was pretty cool.
