The Godzilla Thread - Plus other giant monsters, no matter how popular or obscure

Has anyone watched and have an opinion on Godzilla Singular Point? I started watching it but kinda lost interest after a few episodes and I am curious if anyone thought it was worth finishing. I didn't make it through the other anime trilogy. I have seen pictures and figures of Godzilla's Singular Point design and think it's pretty cool.
I haven't watched it, but the consensus is that it uses a bunch of science mumbo jumbo to explain how Godzilla is a cosmic force that will always exist.
In addition to Minus One on Netflix, TokuShouSu went nuts on Youtube, live streaming Godzilla movies and episodes of Ultraman and Super Sentai.

Its a good time to be a fan!
Got a good sentai rec? I've seen Gokaiger (favorite) Timeranger/Dairanger (both tied for second place), and halfway through King Ohger.

I enjoyed S.P., though I bet binging it would help it instead of waiting week-by-week (which was still fun). I could kinda wrap my brain around what they were going on about in that they were practically describing the kaiju/Godzilla as literal black holes/dimension-warping entities tearing reality apart at the seams. Was a neat idea along the Eldritch abomination vein that Godzilla was still in at the time.

Also further cemented my belief that good CGI can exist in anime when properly utilized. Studio Orange did great with it, and Bones knew how to work with them. I hope that second season happens.

The three shows used to make Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers seasons 1, 2, and 3 (Zyuranger, Dairanger, and Kakuranger) are all really good.

I wanted to check out Ohranger too because I remember the special effects footage used for Zeo looking awesome, but I haven't seen it yet.

SP is much better than the anime trilogy for sure, but not without its flaws.

The monster stuff is mostly great and always makes for fun moments whenever they show up.

The biggest issues with the show are: 1) The human cast is way too big and its hard to get attached to anyone, and 2) The techno-babble expository dialogue is far to prevalent and really drags the show down after a while.

Still, it makes for a fun watch. It definitely looks better than the fully CGI run of Kaiju shows like Godzilla's Anime Trilogy, Netflix's Ultraman, and Netflix's Gamera (which was a good show despite that, but still, I don't like that visual style at all).

So I watched Godzilla Minus One, though it was the b/w version. It was pretty good and actually a movie with characters who overcome an arc in their progression through the plot. That being said, in the last ten years we’ve gotten three movies that are “Godzilla shows up for the first time but not in 1954.” Which is fine, but I’d really like a shift to different styles of movies, maybe more in line with the Heisei era films (though I’m biased towards those) with essentially monster arenas.

Zyu is a nice point to start into sentai
it's not bad but it's not the best, you've got a bit of a hook in "oh lol like that time in Power Rangers but wtf"
for me Deka is probably best sentai. They have the gimmick of being the local ranger cops on Earth so they're just part of a much larger world, so you get episodes like "a mutt and jeff are trying to steal a gem that can be used as a power source for a super weapon" but they're just looking to flip it on the space black market for space cash, and give literally no fucks about blowing up Earth or stopping the accursed power rangers.
It gives a shitload more possibilities to "oh wow the new person we've never heard of showed up today, sure hope they're not an agent of Evil Empire!" and on top of that they can dip heavily into cop show stock plots.

We got an update back in the beginning of June for who will direct the next Monsterverse installment.

Legendary’s Monsterverse has found a new master of disaster. The studio has tapped Grant Sputore to direct the next theatrical outing in the franchise following March’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Sputore came up from the world of commercials, and as a features director helmed the sci-fi movie I Am Mother, starring Hilary Swank. The film bowed at Sundance before hitting Netflix in 2019.
The new Monstervese feature is described as a continuation of the franchise centering Godzilla, Kong and an assortment of other Titans. The script comes from prolific genre scribe Dave Callaham, known for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

A24 Scoops Up Adam Wingard Action Movie 'Onslaught'

Sputore’s hiring follows news that Adam Wingard would not return after directing both the latest installment and Godzilla vs. Kong (2022). Upon the release of Godzilla x Kong, Wingard told The Hollywood Reporter he hoped to return for another film to complete a trilogy, but he ultimately moved on to the A24 feature Onslaught.
In challenging times at the box office with movies underperforming left and right, the Monsterverse has managed to stay robust. Godzilla vs. Kong managed to bring in an impressive $470 million worldwide amid pandemic challenges and a day-and-date release on HBO Max. March’s Godzilla x Kong has grossed more than $567.5 million worldwide. The Monsterverse kicked off with 2014’s Godzilla and has also included Skull Island (2017) and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) for a combined $2.5 billion. It also spawned a TV show, Apple’s well-regarded Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
Sputore is repped by CAA, Navigation Media Group, and Jeff Hynick and Peter C. Sample at Jackoway Austen.

Still rewatching the Showa movies; gotta say it is some supreme bullshit that the male Mothra twin from Mothra vs Godzilla dies offscreen without explanation. RIP, the brightest candle burns quickest. I don't suppose a comic or something ever tried to address what happened there?

Chibigojira does a Father's Day special
roughly translated "my dad had lots of inspiring things he said like 'SKREEEEEE-ONK' and 'guWAAAAHORH' they sure were impressive even if I didn't understand a word of it!"
chibigojira is the wholesomest purest chungus

his dad being heisei godzilla is also the best

I read the Godzilla vs. Kong vs. Justice League comic series that just recently wrapped up.

Honestly, it was a sloppily put together narrative that left potential on the table in favor of cramming as many characters into it as possible. A Kong/Supergirl partnership is explored, but ultimately rushed and goes nowhere. Kong also gets a Green Lantern ring, which is cool, but comes completely out of nowhere. Also, Godzilla, Kong, and Mechagodzilla (the three main MV franchise representatives in the series) hardly interact with each other, if at all.

The best part of the whole thing was the Godzilla/Superman dynamic, which I enjoyed so much, I wouldn't mind if we got a Superman vs. Godzilla movie at some point. That stuff was cool.

My understanding is that the original plan for Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster (1964) was to have two Mothras, one adult and one larva, implying that one of the twins grew to full size inbetween films while the other inexplicably stayed as a larva. That would have been cool, but it was deemed too difficult to pull off.

Keep in mind that these movies were made on a tight schedule and budget and concessions had to be made at times. Usually when you see something like that happen, its because the original prop was too damaged to reuse and there was no time to make another one, or there was some kind of logistics issue. I'm sure having Ghidorah, Rodan, and an adult Mothra (3 flying monsters that all require intricate wire work) would have been a nightmare to pull off for the crew.

Similar issues happened in Destroy All Monsters (1968) which was originally supposed to have an even larger monster cast, including the Gargantuas, Maguma, Ebirah, and Baragon with a substantially larger role than what is in the final film. But the Baragon suit was on loan to Tsyburaya productions to create several monsters for the Ultra Series, and the Gargantuas would have been hard to pull off becuase those monsters relied heavily on the performers playing them. Haruo Nakajima did a terriffic job playing Gaira (the Green Garganua) but he was also Godzilla and they need him for that more important role.

This is where CGI solves a lot of those problems where it just makes it easier to create certain situations, but it ultimately lacks the charm of those practical effects.

Supes vs G
starts out as Godzilla is heading to Metropolis, Superman has to stop him but doesn't want to kill him because it's more or less an animal, then for some reason Men From Planet X and Brainiac combine Ghidorah and Doomsday

Doomsday is played out, IMO. I'd prefer Brainiac interfacing directly with Mecha-King Ghidorah.
