The Godzilla Thread - Plus other giant monsters, no matter how popular or obscure

Looks like Godzilla has officially showed up in Singular Point, although it's definitely going the Shin route in that he's evolving for sure. Wonder if they're implying all of the kaiju are like off-sets of Godzilla.

Jet Jaguar is also becoming more like himself, so it's pretty cool. Still a bit slow of a series, but it's picking up.

EDIT: Music video of the opening is out. It's pretty lit.

It’s 100% Megalon. Just look at that high test jaw. Plus, no way you’d have JJ without Megalon to begin with.

I'm putting my money on it being Megalon too. The shape matches up and I'll be really surprised if it isn't him.

And if it is Megalon that gives me hope Gigan will show up too at some point. We've got JJ, Godzilla and possibly Megalon why not throw him into the mix too it'll be a great reference.

Most likely it is him, but I have a feeling he'll have a different name. Gabara is called Salunga, but it's clearly Gabara and Titanosaurus and Varan are actually different forms of Godzilla.

Looks like the Singular Point episodes on Netflix Japan have their own subs now, so no need to wait for fansubs.

Just watched episode 9. I'm liking the series overall I just think it's being rushed a little. Are there any plans to go for a second season? I feel like this story would be better if it were given some room to breath with more episodes.

Yeah, it does feel rushed, but I'm still enjoying the hell out of it. At the rate things are going, looks like next week we'll get Godzilla's Ultima form. So excited.

Also it's obvious they're taking so much inspiration from Shin Godzilla, which I don't think is a bad thing, but I kinda wanted another interpretation, personally. Maybe there's still something up their sleeve.

The teeth and spine design looks inspired from Shin Godzilla but the design of the Anguirus and Godzilla look to be like some Buddhist dragon, specifically the eyes and mouth/jaw. I dig it

I wonder if they're (Toho) considering this a Shin Godzilla AU?

unpopular opinion...Godzilla 1998 still holds a special place in my heart and i think it's over hated.

YES i admit in retrospect it fails as a godzilla film, yes i admit it's clearly a product of its time, and yeah there's been far better Godzilla movies since both from Japan and even the US. But...it has sentimenal value to me. Zilla 98 was the first godzilla movie i ever saw in theaters. Before I had grown up watching the older (and more campy) movies on reruns during TNT's monsterfest and AMC's monstervision. and keep in mind back then I wasn't a the horror fan i am now. Everything scared me and i was a total coward. But like most kids dinosaurs and giant monsters like Godzilla were the only thing i wasn't afraid of.

so for as bad as i admit it is now...like a lot of movies and tv from back then i just can't flat out hate it.

The cartoon spinoff that came out after 'Zilla arrived was pretty good for the time and at least it didn't bring us the dreaded hellspawn that was Minilla. So I don't hold as big of a grudge against the 98 version as some other fans.

You ever see the Hanna-Barbera Godzilla cartoon? That show gave Godzilla a different kid, Godzooky.

The thing about Godzilla 1998, at least for me, is that if they had called it anything else...literally anything else. Reptilasaurus, Dino Invasion, Jurassic City....ANYTHING, and if they had, I would have accepted it as a cheesy disaster/creature flick that was common in the 90s, like Anaconda.

But, the fact that it was called Godzilla raised certain expectations from lifelong fans like me, and that was only going to be met with massive disappointment.

Despite all that, I will say that, at the very least, good things came out of the movie being released, and here's muh list of them!

1) We got the animated series which is of this statement, my favorite animated Godzilla (We shall see if Singular Point changes that). What the 98 film lacked, this show had in spades. It still had to work, for the most part, within the framework of the 98 film, but it definitely felt more in line with classic Godzilla, borrowing elements from the films and even the old Hanna Barbara series.

2) The 90s Heisei films from Godzilla Vs. King Ghidorah to Godzilla Vs. Destroyah FINALLY got stateside releases. I was finally able to watch this huge part of Godzilla's history and complete the second series, and I believe it was the 98 film that got the ball rolling on getting those released.

3) Its a small thing, but I'm going to count it. Edy's Ice Cream released a chocolate swirl Godzilla themed ice cream that had Godzilla shaped chocolate chips in it and it was DELICIOUS. Seriously, it ruled. Its kind of like how Batman and Robin was a bag of shit, but the Pop Tarts used to promote the film? Fucking awesome. I'll take the Ws where I can get them.

4) I mean this one only happened because the 98 film sucked, but because it sucked, Toho felt compelled to make more Godzilla movies to make up for it, giving us a whole new string of films with the Millennium Series, and at the very least, we got a cool new version of Mechagodzilla with Kiryu and GMK is a top ten entry at least, and most of the films are, at the very least, fun. Its hard to stay mad at one movie, when its disappointment led to us getting 6 new ones.

5) And this is probably the most important, but for all its faults, the 98 film did create new fans. Some kids grow up with that movie and that was their gateway into the larger world of Godzilla, and for that, I can't fault. I'm sure some of my lesser favorite Godzilla films like Godzilla's Revenge and Godzilla Vs. Megalon created fans too, so who am I to fault that?
