Quite simply, you go after the most vulnerable. There's a reason why china has picrelated as part of their police arsenal, and it's primarily due to the regular mass stabbings in kindergardens that go on over there. The body count some of these stabbers have racked up goes above some US school shootings, but then again who follows what goes on in China.

Most gangbangers that American cops have to deal with only have pistols, shotguns, and (very rarely) low-quality SMGs - anything with more firepower is too prohibitively expensive for your average ghetto-dweller. And even with these weapons, most of them are usually illegally-acquired anyways, since the US already has laws preventing most felons from getting firearms. You ever seen Tyrone try and hold up a 7-11 cashier with an AK-74 or AR-15? The only time you ever see fully automatic rifles used in crime, it's either a mass shooting or rarely a terror attack (most terror attacks nowadays take the "Truck of Peace" route instead). And again, in these cases, the firearms are acquired illegally.

When you have a porous border with a narco state, guns being able to enter the country illegally is a given. If they can smuggle cocaine and other narcotics into the US through that border, they can just as easily smuggle all sorts of firearms in through that border. Most people in favour of gun control don't want to address that porous border which makes their attempts to stop gun-related crime futile, because that'd be racist.

I must say though, I do find it weird that the people who are most in favour of gun control are also hardcore #ACAB types. It's strange they'd want the only people that can legally access firearms to be a group of people they think are irredeemably evil and corrupt, who they seemingly think hunt black people for sport like a middle-aged Victorian man in a Kenyan safari.
