Most of the bad will stemmed from the second Sino-Japanese war, which was run by the generation after the Meiji one, and was managed a lot more incompetently by the nepobabies who inherited the machinery of the Japanese state. Speaking of Latvia specifically, when I was there (oughties), the gyppos there had some, then-fashionable, Snookie looking bitches (products of USSR futilely trying to domesticate them) in forward deployment.

This made me think of the hijra. If you're not familiar with them, they're a third gender role for men. The word itself roughly derives from a meaning like "the cowardly defective ones" and historically would have been translated as "eunuch", although there's lots of different words for them across India. There's some third gender stuff going on before the Mughals, but it's after the Mughal empire you really seem to see it emerge.

The Ain-i-Akbari of Abu'l-Fazl from 1590, for example, notes that the regions of Orissa, Ghoraghat and Sylhet "furnish many eunuchs" while discussing their primary exports like fruits, textiles and livestock. This is a book examining life in the court written by the court historian of Akbar the Great. Abu'l-Fazl breaks the Mughal eunuchs into three categories, one who had everything removed (suitable for inner harem work), one who retained some or all of their penis (other work - easier if they could still pee standing up) and then one who had everything removed at a young age and so was very effeminite. The book also discusses what the Hindu Brahmin believe:

Unclean things: These are, — wine, blood, semen, excrement, urine, excretions from the mouth, nose, ears and eyes, sweat, hair, detached nails, bones of animals whose flesh is forbidden, a woman in her courses, and one newly delivered during the period hereinafter stated, any dead animal, forbidden food, a sweeper, an ass, a dog, (tame) swine, the dust that rises from off an ass, goat, sheep or broom, and the mud shaken out of a garment, a sinner guilty of the five great sins, or whoever touches such, a crow, a (tame domestic) cock, a mouse, a eunuch, the smoke from a burnt corpse, a washerman, a hunter, a fisherman, a gamester, a spirit-seller, an executioner, a tanner, a dyer, a currier, and an oilman

That's something to bear in mind when people tell you the Raj demonised eunuchs who were previously "holy" - the Brahmin didn't like eunuchs and saw them as unclean.
Anyway, there's generally a differentiation between the Mughal eunuchs and the hijra - some probably had a disorder of sexual development, others were maybe gay or otherwise effeminate, and some seem to have been castrated as children as a tool for begging. James Forbes writing for the East India company in 1780:

There were a considerable number of human beings called hermaphrodites in the camp, who were compelled, by way of distinguishing them from other castes, to wear the habit of a female, and the turban of a man. I was called into a private tent, to a meeting between the surgeon-major and several medical gentlemen of the army, to examine some of these people: my visit was short, and objects disgusting.

There were also isolated examples of hijra fulfilling a religious role. The Bahuchara temple is associated with the rooster-riding goddess Bahuchara Mata, who basically has a lot of stories involving genital mutilation or magically transforming men into women or women into men. The Brahmins were not generally involved with this, it was generally overseen by the Rajputs (a lower caste that were traditionally warriors). The adherents were generally followers of Shaktism syncretised with Islamic rituals and did things that the Brahmin didn't like, such as animal sacrifice and eating cows, "theatrical performances considered vulgar and unseemly by city elites" and offerings of vulva diagrams made of metal. Lower class people and some Muslims would worship there, and a lot of the temple attendants were hijra (although they were called "Pavaiya" in Gujurati. Some of the Charan (lower caste, poets and pastoralists) adherents believed they could put the curse of the goddess on people by mutilating their own bodies or setting themselves on fire (tragu). The Brahmin got more heavily involved in the temple and while the hijra persisted there for some time, eventually the whole thing got demolished in 2009 and a new temple built to try and push the hijra out. There's a similar thing going on in Koothandavar Temple, which is associated with Vishnu turning into a woman to marry a prince called Aravan and all the hijra ritualistically marry him every year.

Long story short, the British and the Brahmin both didn't like the hijra. The Brits recognised there was a difference between the Mughal/Muslim Kojahs (castrated for use as servants) and whatever was going on with the Hindus and Hinduised Muslims; a 1910 report mentions a practice of impotent men ritualistically getting castrated in the hope of rebirth in the next life while yelling "Dīn! Dīn! Dīn!" - the Arabic word for religion. It also has this to say:

They cultivate singing, play the dhol (a drum), and attitudinise. They go about the bazaars in groups of half a dozen or more, singing songs with the hope of receiving a trifle. [Such a group I saw at Sandūr, who, on hearing that I wished to photograph them, made tracks for another place. — E.T".] They are not only persistent, but impudent beggars, singing filthy, obscene, and abusive songs, to compel the bazaarmen to give them something. Should they not succeed, they would create a fire and throw in a lot of chillies, the suffocating and irritative smoke producing violent coughing, etc., so that the bazaarmen are compelled to yield to their importunity, and give them a trifle to get rid of their annoyance. While such were the pursuits in the day, at nightfall they resorted to debauchery and low practices by hiring themselves out to a dissipated set of Moslems, who are in the habit of resorting to these people for the purpose, whilst they intoxicate themselves with a preparation termed majoon, being a confection of opium, and a drink termed boja, a species of country beer manufactured from rāgi (Elezisine Coracana), which also contains bhang (Indian hemp). In addition to this, they smoke bhang. The Hijras are met with in most of the towns of Southern India, more especially where a large proportion of Mussalmans is found

Basically they were considered unclean and were not liked by the Brahmin, and then in the 1870s the Raj classified them as "criminal tribes" and could fine, arrest or imprison them, in part to stop them kidnapping children to castrate and make more hijra so they could put them to work as beggars and child prostitutes (although they mostly took in orphans and kids who'd been kicked out for having a sex development disorder/being effeminate). They lived in a way analogous to those "drag houses" in 80s New York. So they mostly made a living from begging and prostitution because they weren't allowed to work, but clearly they got nasty if they didn't get their money.

One aspect of the hijra is that they were treated very superstitiously and believed to be able to bestow blessings, despite simultaneously being reviled as unclean. So a bit like the fairies in Sleeping Beauty or chimneysweeps at a wedding, it was auspicious to receive a blessing from the hijra at a significant life event, like weddings, childbirth or or a Grihapravesha (basically a housewarming). But like the evil fairy, they would lay a curse on you ("bad-dua", actually a Muslim term) if they were snubbed.

They forced me to go to ATM since I did not have cash. They left once we pay up . They gave their photo card and contact numbers to us and told to contact them if any other group disturb.

Myself and wife is traumatized so much, we could not sleep. Baby and elder Kid are also scared.

We were passing through financial difficulties recently due to maternity expenses and also my mother expired recently due to stroke and we had some hospital and ritual expenses there. I am the only earning person supporting family. This 50K demand is a big amount for us. We requested them to settle with 15K max to give us a relief and a peaceful resolution. They said , they are not beggers and became violent and asked to arrange funds whatever way and started ruckus inside house. We were very much worried about child safety. When my sister had her baby, there were serious complications. She spent almost a month in the hospital, and the baby was in the NICU the entire time. The total expenses came to around 5 to 6 lakh rupees. The day she was discharged and came home, a group of hijras arrived and demanded ₹1 lakh, claiming it was a boy and thus warranted a higher payment. When we refused, they started creating a scene, stripping off their clothes in protest. Eventually, the police arrived, and after a compromise, we ended up giving them ₹25,000. It was a huge financial burden—giving away ₹25,000 unnecessarily, which is about a month’s salary for most Indians. Even in a normal childbirth, the hospital and medicine expenses can reach up to ₹1 lakh, considering the care needed for both mother and baby

My close friend is about to become a father. When when his older brother had a baby a group of hijaras came to their house and demanded 25k and began harassing him. Even the cops didn't help and just told him to make a compromise. They eventually left after taking 8k and now my friend is worried that when his child is born they will return and demand more money. He and his cousins are considering using bats/stumps only for self defence and use violence only as a last resort if they show up in the society. Not the watchman. Usually it's the hospital staff. Wardboys, nurses, cleaners, etc. get a small cut for leaking this information. They tell the address and that's why hijras reach directly at home. In small towns it's very common for them to come directly at the hospital right before discharge and will not let you leave the hospital/sit in your car before you pay them. You’re from India, but you don’t know what hijra are? I wish I’d lived wherever you did, because we had them at every major intersection in Kolkata. Fuckers harassed me at my wedding, and once camped outside our flat for a few hours because they thought my wife and I were “hiding” a baby (we don’t have one, lmao). And no, they’re not typically “male crossdressers.” Some men have been caught wearing women’s clothes to try taking advantage of hijra-related superstitions, must most hijra are members of a “third sex” that doesn’t necessarily meet the Western definition of transgender. However, it’s a bit unfair to say that they’re “causing a bad rep for actual transwomen.” I have no love for hijra whatsoever, but they’ve been around for an incredibly long time—there are allusions to their existence in ancient Sanskrit texts, Mughal literature, and Colonial-era treatises and surveys. So you can’t really say that they cause a “bad rep for actual transwomen” when hijra have been around for much, much longer than any contemporary definition of the terms “transgender” or “transwomen.” I’m not an expert on gender studies, or the history of gender, but could provide more resources if this is something you’re actually interested in. I wrote a research paper ages back on the invention of the term “Adivasi” as a sociopolitical category, and remember seeing references to hijra in some of the colonial-era British censuses I reviewed.

I once went to a talk by an individual who runs a shelter for trans folks in Calcutta. According to them, the Hijra community is like a cult and is extremely predatory of its members. The details change with every Hijra community but the ones they interacted with had a tiered hierarchy within the community, and its finances were managed like gangs. The low level folks would have to bring in income via begging and prostitution and go up the ladder over time based on the influence they develop within the community. It also is extremely difficult for Individuals to quit the community because of it was run. Not to mentioned the fact that openly transgendered people don’t have a place in our society. All this is just made worse by the harassment they do and the stigma and attributions of disgust people have towards them (and which weaponize for begging). Not only that, the a few years ago the laws around transgendered individuals were changed to require them to get medical examinations performed to get certified as trans individuals before they can avail the corresponding benefits.

These hijras are a nuisance. A few weeks back, my best friend’s wife gave birth to the cutest twins ever. I really don’t know how these hijras came to know of it. At least 7 of them barged in at the residence without any warning. They demanded 40k(20k for each baby). Thankfully me and my other military buddies were there and my coursemate got into an argument and asked them to leave. They were not ready to and started breaking things in the house. PS: I am very afraid of them, idk why and always give them something when they ask (out of fear only, no sympathy) but this one time, I felt sad after this happened.

I got flashed by a hijra when I was 5; they had come because my little brother was born. Also, just 2 years back a hijra squeezed my balls in a train because I wouldn't pay. (I hate to admit this, but it did feel good in a way...she did it in a flirtatious manner and was sexy as hell)

Recently, I was blessed with a wonderful child. However, from day one, we were anxious, expecting a visit from the Hijras/Kinnars demanding money. Surprisingly, they didn’t show up for over a month.

Then, they appeared at my wife’s paternal home, where both she and our child are staying, and extorted ₹25,000. Later, another group came to my house and tried to force their way in. Fortunately, these two incredible members (Sooji & Lola) of my household stood their ground and prevented them from entering. The intruders hesitated upon seeing them, became agitated, and said, “We will take our due.”

I told them that another group had already extorted money from my in-laws and that I wouldn’t pay a single penny. At first, they insisted I had to pay. When I ignored them, they started hurling abuses at me. I shut the door, and they began banging on it aggressively. At that moment, both of my pets became extremely agitated and started barking furiously. That finally made them leave. But here’s my question—why should anyone be forced to pay for their own child’s birth? What role do they play in a child’s life? Absolutely none.

From the start, I was firm in my decision not to give them anything. However, since my in-laws are elderly and didn’t want any trouble, they ended up paying ₹25,000, something I strongly oppose. No matter the pressure, I refuse to give in. I won’t pay a single penny to these thugs.

You wouldn’t believe how professional they’ve become. Now they simply go straight to hospitals or nursing homes, collect data on which poor sods have died, then use the addresses to visit the families. They’ve even started giving stamped receipts, claiming that if any other group shows up, showing this receipt means the family doesn’t have to pay a single penny again. What a bloody farce.

Then let me tell you an incident—listen and you’ll be shocked how far their reach extends. I live in Konnegor, and there’s someone just like that in our neighbourhood. When his daughter had a child, we also heard about it because we have a good relationship with them. The person I’m talking about, whose daughter had the child, was once a high-ranking officer in Lalbazar, now retired. As expected, they came to his family with a gang demanding money. A lot of arguing and bickering ensued, and things got out of hand because they wouldn’t accept anything less than 1 lakh rupees. So, he called Lalbazar immediately using his employee code, and sure enough, a van full of police arrived. But despite the police showing up, it was settled for ₹20,000 in the end, and the police themselves advised to avoid trouble and settle quietly with some money. After seeing this, it became clear that even if the police come, the money must be paid—and the police can’t stop them from taking it.

"So, I went to a restaurant with my friend. At the entrance, I saw two transgender women collecting money, and we entered just as they were about to leave. One of them touched me—inappropriately, and I do mean quite scandalously—from my shoulder down to my waist. She then whispered in a very intimate voice, ‘Hey, paisa dena’ (Hey, give money). I honestly disliked the way she touched me and said, ‘Aisa touch kyun kiya? Aise touch nahi karne ka’ (Why did you touch me like that? Don’t touch like that). Then she said, ‘Satyanash hoga tera. Tujhe bhi mere jaise bacche paida honge’ (You’ll be doomed. You’ll have children like mine). I got angry. My friend told me to let it go, and we went inside. I was upset about everything. Maybe I overreacted, but honestly, I knew that touch and I did not like it. I told this story at home. My wife said I did the right thing, but the rest of my family freaked me out, saying, ‘Inka shaap lagta hai, tujhe paisa dena chahiye tha, kyun zagda kiya?’ (He’s cursed, you should have given money, why did you argue?). I’m not very religious and don’t believe in curses and such, but I do care about what my parents say. Maybe I’m asking here for validation. Any thoughts?"

So, I was hosting a Gruhapravesh (housewarming) early this morning—at the ungodly hour of 5:30 AM. Just as we were getting into the spirit of things, our gated community got a surprise visit from a troupe of Hijras. Now, I know some people hire clowns for parties, but this was something else entirely. These Hijras, bless their dramatic hearts, decided that our early-morning festivity needed an extra dash of excitement. They stormed in and, without missing a beat, demanded we pay them or they’d start a fashion show, featuring their outfits… on the pavement. Naturally, I called the police. I thought they’d respond quicker than my grandma’s home remedies. I called 100 and said, “Help, this is an emergency!” They called me back 15 minutes later, only to inform me that they were tied up with a similar situation somewhere else. Lovely. I could practically hear the police dispatcher shrugging. Frustrated, I handed the phone to my wife, who tried her luck with the police. They told us to say, “The police are on their way,” which we did. Cue the Hijras calling their friends—apparently, they have a whole network for these kinds of emergencies. One of the Hijras then decided to strip down to nothing and start a very one-sided game of "naked hide and seek." We were trapped. With small children and elderly family members present, we had to negotiate. My mom and cousin played the role of diplomats, eventually haggling them down from 1 lakh to 40k. It was like watching an episode of “The Real Housewives” but with more nudity and fewer luxury cars. When the police finally showed up, they must have thought the situation was over. The Hijras were long gone, and our party guests were left in awe at how one could get so much drama before breakfast. Oh, and I asked the gate security why they let these uninvited guests in. Their answer? They couldn’t do anything. Classic. For future reference, I’m considering some new party favors: large, fierce dogs (Hijras reportedly hate them), pepper spray, or even a small arsenal. Just kidding. Or am I? Anyway, that’s the story of how my Gruhapravesh became the most memorable one ever. Oh, I am trying to keep this on a lighter note but its horrific for people enduring it. May be Guns do solve some problems.

It is really irritating how they expect us to give large sums of money just because they are hijras. And they strip to show that they are really hijras. As a teenager(19M), it was quite scary for me as well,. I had cousins who were kids(10F and 8M), who were traumatized and started crying because of their behaviour. We had to pay a sum of 12K so that they could leave us alone. I wasn't able to forget about it, but all the grown ups got over it and acted as if nothing even happened like 30 min after. For them, they knew that it was like a normal thing in Hyderbad

It made me realise, this needs to be spoken about because there needs to be something called law and order. Because this cannot be normalised, there needs to be strong action against these ppl asking money just because of their physical disability. They are able enough to work, they need to be assisted to find a decent quality work to be able to sustain their life instead of hooliganism against small businessmen, and common people

They extort huge amounts of money from people who are scared of getting a magical curse. If the threat of a magical curse doesn't work, then they'll start stripping naked and singing bawdy songs and dancing in the street, so people will pay them off to avoid the shame of having a spectacle in front of the house. They'll smash up your house or ruin your party if they get into your property and you refuse them. They have networks of spies in places like hospitals and catering companies to find out when someone's got an event they can gatecrash (in exchange for a cut of the funds) and the police won't help you because they're scared of getting cursed and/or getting a cut of the funds. And they'll sexually harass men in public in the hopes the men will give them money to avoid the shame of appearing gay. And in the case of newborns they have sometimes been known to hurt, kidnap or kill the baby if they're snubbed. They do, however, run away at the first sign of physical violence... but people do not generally seem to hit them.

This does help explain part of the reason there's so many gated communities in India, although as some of the tales attest the people manning the gates will just let the hijra in anyway.
