The part of their culture that causes this is children being lead away from their interests and towards academics for higher paying engineering/medical jobs. Sports isn't funded or cared about in India either, and it makes sense if you look at it. Students get to go to first world countries with student visas, while humanities and sports are far harder careers to find guaranteed work in. If you go into medicine however, so long as you put sustained work into it, you aren't going to leave med school without a job.
Their education system is also fucked.
Why Is India So Fucked
I got decades (approaching my 4th decade) of dealing with folks from India, and got contacts of benchods from almost every province, including Nagaland. Let's talk about this region in general:
From Iran up to Burma, you're going to notice a lot of commonalities even with all the languages and religion changes from one end to the other. Same racial mixes, similar foods, and very common patterns of thinking from the populations.
The biggest, loudest, most apparent difference of these people from the rest of Asia, the West, even Russia, is one thing:
the honesty virtue.
The reason why the West can never understand the thinking of the people from this region is because most everyone has honesty as a highly-held virtue in the civilization they came from. It's not that Indians don't know what lying is, or what honesty is. It's the position that honesty takes in your personal value system, the one you use every day to make decisions and interact with people. The default mode in this region is that it's switched off, or it's stacked below other things.
Europe and other places have honesty as a very high-order virtue in society and it's programmed. You're taught this while you're still in diapers (provided you didn't have brain-dead low-IQ atheist feral parents). It's a fundamental virtue held in Judeo-Christianity, it's in the Ten Commandments. All criticism of human failing centers on people who proactively deprioritize the honesty virtue.
That's
why jeets annoy you so much.
Muslims are interesting due to their historical proximity to Persians and Indians, how Islam introduced lightswitch flexibility to honesty (yep; taqqiyah... where it's okay to lie, cheat and steal if you're doing it to spread or protect the religion). Even then, Muslims having a higher honesty virtue puts them in terrible conflict with the subcontinent, and it will be that way forever.
Loyalty: The Lingua Franca
It's going to sound weird to you if you analyze it, but one virtue that Westerners and Indians do share is the virtue of loyalty. Of friends, family members, and aligned individuals, and also to esoteric things such as beliefs. This is systematically ingrained on Indian children just the same as in the West.
But you'll discover that the loyalty virtue is a near universal requirement to even have a civilization at all. The only difference here is that Indians can form loyalties that project outward rather than super-insular loyalties.
This is the key feature that allows more abstract human ideas like nationalism to exist.
And that's where you get confused. Indians certainly seem somewhat similar, there's English speaking ones who can certainly--at a level anyway--understand and commiserate, and they certainly are willing to defend ideals that you may hold.
So why is all this so fucked?
Read Your Indian
It's fucked because you don't understand which Indians hold the honesty virtue in high regard or not. Like I said, I've got 30+ years experience with the subcontinentals, from all over India.
You've heard the terms "high trust society" and "low trust society". Indians operate in a very low trust environment. This is the honesty virtue in application. BPO companies have learned how to deal with this by linking loyalty to honesty. Like magic, most of the Indians involved in the relationship comply. They want to prove their loyalty, and you've directly told them that honesty is the pathway to keeping loyal. It's a very simple contract with simple terms, and for most Indians, this works. That's why they're scooping up your jobs.
But with the latest events, and if you have Indian call center scammers pointing a VOIP dialer at your phone and ringing it 30 times a day, like mine, you're seeing all these people who were never forced to make that contract. To be honest, be loyal, and prove you're not a shitstain. They're coming into Europe and the West and enjoying the No-Tests environment we've put everywhere in our high-trust societies.
Have you ever worked with an Indian, in India, who is allowed to write code? Jesus Fucking Christ you have to lock down the source control so they can't push branches to main, you have to have every audit feature and code linter known to man enabled, you have to run every scanner, style checker, security auditor, every test must pass, every test battery needs a performance analysis, and set every fucking thing to gatekeep the commits to the protected branches... and every single test you put them through you have to send them a War and Peace email from the automation WITH the links so they can go learn what it is they fucked up.
And that's before you even get down to wanting to read their fucking code. Claude isn't making their shit any better. In fact, it's making the volume of it oh so much fucking worse because it's generating so much more code that they don't have the time to understand.
What companies have learned is that on-shore Indians who can't escape the people surrounding them with high honesty virtue have to take more effort than standard desi bullshitting tactics that Indians normally do. They know their work is going to get evaluated, and they are being judged. It's high pressure, so they will always put more than a basic effort in. And that's good enough for them to fire your ass and deal with that instead.
For most of these desis, the minute the monitoring is switched off there's no attachment to loyalty anymore... so the honesty virtue drops away almost immediately. So many Indians calculate where to put their efforts and burn it on scamming, which to them is just mindless panhandling, rather than investing in the people around them.
In my travels I would say only 5% of Indians, at home and abroad, have the same sense of honesty virtue as we do. It's the people who learned the value in that virtue themselves; no spirituality needed.
These are also the people I have some of the most deepest conversations with. It kind of kills me inside because India is hamstrung by its own value system. But without honesty being widely held as a topmost personal priority, at scale this has sunk the whole nation into this land of broken ambition. The corruption is massive. The will to make infrastructure better is not there. And it's insane because India is good at heavy industry, but can never make the leap that requires broad societal trust to do better things than just operate an air drill. It's the frozen ambition that low-trust societies are left with that halts human progress there at a snail's pace.
That's why so many Indians want to roam the planet and escape that place that is frozen in time, but they're bringing with them the same value system in their heads that holds India back. And that's why you cannot stand these constant bullshitting, lying desis. Even if you command loyalty and respectability, your pet dog can do the same thing, and your dog is more trustworthy than a desi.
At least they have their nationalism, even though they can't be bothered to cut back on the bribery long enough to build septic systems and process trash.
