Senior BJP leader and Madhya Pradesh minister Kailash Vijayvargiya has said the Australian women cricketers who were molested in Indore three days ago while on their way to a cafe “should have been more careful”.

“Look, there has been a lapse. But the players suddenly leaving from there without telling anyone — they didn't even tell their coach — this is a mistake from their side too. Because, there was personal security and police security too, but they left as no one noticed, and this incident happened,” Vijayvargiya said to NDTV.

‘Unfortunate, but…’: What Kailash Vijayvargiya said about players

“The incident is unfortunate,” he added, “But now the players should also learn from this. I feel that when we go to another country, or another city, we should also worry about our own safety.”

He further said, as per news agency PTI: “Players must keep in mind that when they leave their place, their security and local administration should be informed because there is a huge craze for cricketers (in India)."

This statement came just a day after another BJP MLA pointed towards the arrested accused's religion — Aqeel Sheikh, who has a previous criminal record, happens to be a Muslim — in his reaction on the incident in which at least two players faced stalking and harassment by a bike-borne man.

Comment comes after Hindu-Muslim statement

BJP MLA Rameshwar Sharma had on Saturday referred to the accused Aqeel Sheikh as being among “some illegitimate children" who “conspire to defame Indian culture”. He further brought in an incident from neighbouring Uttar Pradesh wherein a 13-year-old Muslim girl was allegedly harassed by a Muslim cleric.

He added: “Whether the daughter is Hindu or Muslim, guaranteeing the safety of daughters is our guarantee. Whether the daughter belongs to India or Australia, her safety is also our guarantee."

What happened to the players
It was around 11 am on October 23 when two Australian cricketers left their team hotel to head to a cafe ahead of their clash against South Africa. That's when they were allegedly inappropriately touched.

The cricketers informed their security officer, Danny Simmons, about the incident, following which a complaint was lodged at the MIG road police station. Police are examining if there were any shortfalls in the security protocols.

BJP govt faces questions

While the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) slammed the incident, a political slugfest broke out over the alleged molestation of the cricketers.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi took to X and condemned the incident, saying, “Disgraceful. We boast about economic growth, but, we continue to fail providing safe spaces for women. What a shameful act.” Congress's MP unit president Jitendra Patwari condemned the incident.

Fun fact about medieval London in comparison to India. They banned street shitting in 1309 and by 1388 the fine for public defecation was set to 20 pounds, which was the equivalent of 1000 daily wages for a skilled tradesman back then (Which would have bought you about 34 cows or 15 horses). Even back in the days of the 4 Humors and Miasma Europeans were just inherently cleanlier out of instinct than Indians are nowadays.

A lot of the relevant text is in Kannada, the language that gave us the letter for this: ಠ_ಠ. Which is rather appropriate. 44 million speakers but it seems most of them aren't online. The name of the God they're venerating appears to be Beereshwara Swamy, which basically translates as Lord Heroic God and seems to be an avatar of Shiva mixed with their local farming God Beerappa. They seem to think he was born from cow dung, and the cow dung they're having a snowball fight with either evokes him or somehow is him, and therefore this cow dung is magic and might cure them of all diseases. In Kannada it seems his name is rendered as "ಬೀರೇಶ್ವರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿ".

The people with the funny grass moustaches are part of the ritual, they're the "sneaks". Here's a summary from what appears to be a 2003 article:
Starting early morning, men, women and children begin collecting cow dung from all over the village and dump it in a place designated for it, behind the Beerappa temple. Later, half naked children go all around the village collecting oil and butter for offering pooja at the temple. After the required oil and butter are collected, they offer pooja at the Karappa temple which is about one km away from the Beerappa temple. Once the pooja is done, the villagers come back in a procession. On the way back, one person is designated as a Chadikora (sneak). He is then fixed with a mustache and beard made of grass, seated on a donkey and brought to the temple in a procession. After reaching the temple, the Chadikora's mustache and beard are removed and buried in the pit where the heap of dung has been deposited. Pooja is offered to the heap of cow dung and then starts the fun! Immediately after the pooja is offered, a handful of cow dung is splashed on the priest which is the green signal for the others. Every single person in the village is pushed into the pit and smeared with cow dung. Thousands of people from the nearby villages gather to watch the game. Later, an effigy of the Chadikora is made and taken to the Kondigekara Gudda (a hillock nearby) to be burnt. A chicken too is burnt along with the effigy. The villagers clean themselves in the lake, come back to the village and abuse the Chadikora. It is also believed that participating in the cow dung splashing game cures people of all kinds of disease, which is one of the reasons for keeping the tradition alive, even after hundreds of years.

Traditionally a dalit performs the first offering to the pile of cow dung festival. The "sneaks" represent nasty people who gossip and spread lies and once caused some big issues in the village, so they're paraded around on donkeys as a symbolic reminder of how those people were punished.

From what I've been able to work out, this cow dung festival arose out of a regional belief, Shiva is often depicted being covered in ashes, which is why some Holy Men smear themselves with ashes (Vibhuti). It's purportedly because Shiva burned the universe he created and smeared his body with ashes. The regional belief at play here is to do with the magic bull he rides, Nandi, and the idea that actually what he did was collect the magic bull's dung, burned that and then smeared himself with burned cow shit. This article and this article are the closest I've found to a retelling of the myth for this cow dung festival.

Once upon a time, an itinerant worker came to the village of Gumatapura. He was a devout follower of Shiva. He got some work from the village chieftan, but then this worker randomly died (reason unspecified). His special shoulder bag (jolige), prayer beads (rudraksha) and cremated ashes got slung on the village dung heap by the chieftan. A few days later, the chieftan was riding in his bullock cart, when the wheel got caught on that bag. At this very moment, the large stone statue of Shiva's penis that they worship (the lingam) began pouring blood. Or possibly some villagers had dug up the dung heap to look for fertiliser, and discovered a Shiva penis statue had appeared. Either way, Beereshwara Swamy appeared to the Chieftan that night and said "you need to make up for the bad thing you did. I command you to build a shrine to me on top of the dung heap, and also start having a cow dung festival". People who've made a vow to Beereshwara Swamy will get their wishes granted as a result of participating in the cow dung festival. It kind of feels like this might have started out as some sort of atonement ritual for dishonouring someone (you sling him in cow shit? You must also sling yourself in cow shit) and it's just ended up turning into some weird scatalogical party.

This article from 2024 has a paragraph that piqued my interest further:
"The Beereshwar Jatra Mahotsav will be held on March 21, 22 and 23. This is a fair that has been held for about 9 years. When we were preparing for the fair 3 years ago, we stopped it due to the arrival of Covid. Now preparations are underway again, and the festival will go to the homes of all the clansmen," said the village leaders.

It's not about the poop festival, but about another of this God's festivals, the miracle of the coconut breaking. The miracle is they smash each other in the head with coconuts and the coconuts break open. But this has only been getting held for about a decade. So I'm wondering if this poop festival is also a relatively new phenomenon, although articles keep saying it's a centuries old tradition. There's an unrelated cow dung festival held in another village on the same day that seems to commemorate Shiva getting defeated by one of his monks. This is all so abjectly disgusting that it somehow hasn't disgusted me researching this because it doesn't feel like it could be real...

Over the years I've experienced many different levels of integration from Indians, and from my observation it's only a small selection of the totally 100% Americanized ones that can end up looking pretty okay (aka a TINY amount). An Indian's horrible genetics is partially passed down from the homeland due to the horrible living conditions and their diets consisting of nothing but sugar and spices, and it doesn't help that they refuse to change their lifestyles upon arrival. A real Indian will never be attractive, but maybe their grandkids will grow up to be passable. I've encountered some decent looking Indians (male and female), but it's the ones that drop the lifestyle of their parents that advance the furthest.
