Oh fun fact, not sure if this was previously mentioned but because jeets are incapable of normal burial rites the catfish in the river Ganges have grown to the sufficient size to swallow a man because they feed on a diet of Jeet corpses floating down stream. This was actually proven in the 2nd episode of the show River monsters .

The problem really is where you draw the line. When it comes to illness, it's actually remarkably difficult to determine what has killed a person, which is why stuff like "dying of old age" is becoming less common. If you smoke your whole life, weakening your lungs, then you catch the Flu, get pneumonia and die, what killed you, the cigarettes or the Flu? Both?

I'd have to see the particular study you're referring to, but it doesn't seem outside the realm of possibility that with all the very unhealthy people in this country, Covid could complicate existing illnesses that they otherwise would have kept limping on with, especially given that it was a sudden pandemic and people didn't have immunities built up like with cold and Flu. This is how you can end up with Covid related deaths being added to the numbers, if Covid complicates pre-existing illnesses, then like with the cigarettes and Flu example, it isn't perfectly clear whether to count it or not. I generally lean towards including them.
Also mind you, I'm not a Covid hoaxer, though I am very wary of the use of statistics to lie to people, so please do share the study if you wouldn't mind!

Maybe what we should do is measure deaths by median death age for a given cause instead.

I do wonder about the actual pathogenicity of all this cow poop. Sure, I can see fresh poop as being hazardous. But they stockpile it for months in piles. India is a hot place. Bacteria and sunlight are going to heat those piles up, and most bacteria we can get infected by like to live at our body temperature. So it might actually be less dangerous than one might expect, at least from the bacterial perspective.

Now parasitic eggs and cysts, that's a different story. Many of them are built to withstand adverse conditions. I wonder if these Indians are absolutely riddled with worms and eukaryotic protozoa and everything in between. Just not dangerous bacteria. Another possibility is that the poop bacteria is now simply a part of their normal skin flora, kind of like that way hospital staff often have MRSA as normal skin flora.

I'm impressed with the paint jobs on their temples too. Those things are trippy as heck. It's not even something simple like a rainbow pattern. It's more like the lighting effects in early 3D games where they just made them as colorful as possible with all sorts of emitters. Custom FPS levels made by kids used to be like that. You sniff enough poo fumes and go to the temple and you're definitely going to meet some half-crab half-elephant half-snake deity.

If Indians get mad when westerners document this sort of festival, and we know about it, what are they doing that we don't know about that's even worse?

Aryans were not exactly white, the ones who arrived in India probably looked a bit like this:

Dravidians (blah blah blah technically a linguistic group) are/were largely a mixture of the Ancient Iranian Zagrosian farmers who looked something a bit like this (they didn't have the light skin gene like some Iranians do now, they'd have been olive skinned) and brought farming and lactose tolerance with them:

and Ancient Ancestral South Indians, who probably looked a bit like the negrito Andamanese (not African despite some superficial similarities) or certain indigenous groups like the Veddas.

That link suggests a relation to Australian aborigines but from what I can tell that's incorrect, and in many ways the AASI were sort of the opposite (small and lithe, rather than big and stocky like Polynesians).

Most Indians actually have very little Aryan ancestry even though they largely ended up speaking Aryan (or heavily Aryan-influenced) languages

You'll note the heavy skew towards Ancient Iranian in the Indus Valley/Harappan civilisation, so the people who the Aryans encountered and initially settled down with probably looked quite similar to other Iranian groups they'd already encountered who'd taught them barley farming. It's unclear what religion they followed (they didn't seem to build temples, despite having an advanced urban civilisation) but given they engaged in fractional burial (stripping a body to the bones, like the Zoastorians) I'd guess it had a bit of an Iranian skew - which makes sense, as the early Vedic religion appears to have syncretised some Iranic beliefs compared to other PIE religions (greater emphasis on fire rituals and a ritual soma drink, the asuras becoming more explicitly antagonistic demi-gods, a more formalised view of dharma linked to orthopraxy).

The AASI seem to skew more towards tribal gods/animism, and that's where a lot of the more out there Hindu practices seem to come from (especially the really disturbing looking god figures that more explicitly seem to scream "DEMON"). This does also partially explain why people are picking up on something to do with the "Dalit-types" looking smaller and darker, as a lot of them seem to have significantly higher proportions of AASI and lower proportions of Ancient Iranian or Indo-Aryan
