Your party traverses through a dank cave system, the air around you thickens as the light from the torch held dimly casts a short veil of vision forward. While your group slowly navigates, you sense a strange presence nearby, the sensation of being watched grows. Rocks, drips of water and debris echoes from the tunnels ahead, you advise your companions to hold their position as you go further to investigate.

You approach the threshold of a cavern corridor, it stretches far down a narrow pass. Raising the torch in an attempt to quell your fears and curiosities, the thoughts of possible sources of sounds circle your mind, "perhaps it was just jittering bugs on the wall or maybe a rodent feasting upon rotted flesh of one of their own". The noises of shuffling and stones crashing against the walls become louder and more clear, a couple more steps are taken until you are able to make out a faint silhouette of a figure blocking the path. You roll for a perception check (17). The figure is tall in stature and almost completely obstructs the path forward, "a giant boulder? surely there must be enough room to squeeze by", you take a few more steps forward until you come to a complete stop, stunned in pause while staring at the hulking creature before you. Startled from it's slumber, the creature swiftly turns to face you. Roll for initiative (7). The towering troll gleams with a verdant reptilian aura speckled with vermilion hues across its hide. I hope it's friendly...

This community challenge features a limited palette restriction polled by you and your fellow kiwis, but with a twist! Not only will your palette be randomly selected, it will be paired off with a randomized subject to use it on. The challenge will be a little more involved than the others, you better have prepared your travel pack well, the trial ahead might get rough.

Palette/Creature Bestiary
1741052396650.jpeg1741052264418.jpeg
Before you are 2 charts with designated names and numbers that will decide the selections through the use of a dice roll, specifically a D20 (1 20-sided dice). In no particular order, you will roll for each to see what you get. Then, using the palette chosen, you will make a beast that dawns the colors shown. The creature can be as close to or as far from what the conventional appearances would be: if you got a Dire Wolf but want to make something more dog-like, just keep it within the Canidae family species of animal, same goes for goblin/rat/etc. You can also shoehorn in a lolcow if you think they would fit the selected creature well, NakedAndLaughing might make for a good troll design.

The colors within the palette must be used at least once in some fashion on the creature, if any other colors outside of the palette are used, keep it to a minimum as to not ruin the spirit of the challenge (use those colors for minor backgrounds or setting pieces). Since some palettes are purposefully strange, you are allowed to slightly go up and down 1 shade for each color to help with shadows/lighting. Colors are not to be mixed for simplicity sake, the tones given should be static outside of what was mentioned.

Dice Roll Site To Use <--- Free site to use, it offers all dice types and possible coin flips you'll need.

BONUS CHALLENGE
For the brave who want to spice up their random encounter, select any or all of these attunements for your challenge to alter how the creature appears. This may require a bit of creativity on your end, alternatively you can follow the suggestions listed. A mock card I will try to use for a submission will be shown as an example.
1741053448601.jpeg
Did it spawn alone or is there a pack of them? Roll 1 4-sided dice (1D4) to see how many appeared. Trouble often travels in packs after all.

Determine if the beast comes in peace or is hostile: Flip a coin (Heads = Friendly, Tails= Hostile). The result can be expressed through the general attitude the creature might have. If it's peaceful, show it sitting calmly or with a curious pose, for more humanoid creatures perhaps they have been lost in the dark cave and seek the refuge of good company, waving their arm as a sign of being friendly. If hostile, show the teeth or a leap in aggression towards you, as mentioned, for more sentient creatures, have their weapons drawn and pointed or preparing a shot to attack. You may also flip a coin for each creature if you rolled higher than a 1 for the pack quantity, there might be a bit of infighting between the creatures as a result perhaps.

What type of enemy are we dealing with? Some creatures are ambiguous enough to where they can come with a variety of features. Make a list of 4 weapons and 4 classes: Some sentient creatures are wielding a particular weapon or learned the arts of a certain proficiency, roll 1D4 and see what they're holding and roll for what class they are. For creatures more akin to nature or dont hold conventional armaments, use 4 of 5 the colors of the palette as a possible selection to see if they are enchanted with some kind of elemental aura or property (these can also be unconventional). If you rolled their pack quantity of 2,3, or 4, you can roll for each creature if you want to give weapon/property variety (1 holds a sword, maybe 1 holds a bow, etc).

Show your kiwi engaging the beast. Create a kiwi to combat your foes, make a list of 4 classes and roll 1D4 for what your kiwi might be. Someone has to be the first to confront the interloper, guess that means you. You may also choose to roll a D20 if you maybe want the kiwi to have a separate palette than the creature, it's up to you.

There was so much more I wanted to do for this challenge, but as it grew in complexity, the harder it was to get finished. Originally I was going to make a custom font for all the lists but after getting the rough done, there was no way it would be made without everything else. I also wanted to make a theme of creature silhouettes for the charts, which also would have taken me ages. Eventually I'll get around to inking it and just donate the font here for people to use for whatever, it's going to take time but it should be cool if/when its finished. After looking at everything after the fact, it looks so bad lmao, this is worse than Limbo of the Lost type shit. This is like where the budget went into the writing but the whole thing was filmed on a 50$ camcorder.

Apologies for being late, I'm going to try shooting for having the challenges posted early in the mornings like before, life is complicated atm.

As a disclaimer, I had to cut some corners and caved to using some AI/stock images for many of the creatures. Dont worry, it was all ethically sourced theft-I mean transformative works that are clearly differentiated from the originals. I make no claim to the ownership of the creatures shown anyway, they are merely for our educational purposes via challenges.

Also, some may have heard that the son of Gary Gygax, Ernie Gygax Jr who helped co-produce/test DnD, recently passed. This is somewhat startling because this challenge was in the process of being made for about a month, and shortly near it's release, he kicks the bucket. This is a strange coincidence and feels like we're sharing some kind of synchronicity as of late, people thought this a bit with the tarot challenge. Weird.

Dont Cheat!
Okay, fine. You can cheat a little if what you rolled isn't what you wanted, but at least stick to 1 of the results for either the creature or the palette. Some may have experience with many different palettes so its often not an issue, for others it's not so easy. There's no way to verify your selections anyway, so odds are people are probably going to pick what they like, and thats cool. As a side note, these palettes are 95% original (outside of Kiwi Kabana which happens to be the forums color scheme), some curated based on lolcows while others were created from colors that looked interesting together.

Simple Is Often Better
As the saying goes: "An idiot admires complexity, a genius admires simplicity". Getting hung up on all the finer details can derail you from getting the bulk of a project done. Dumbing something down may result in making a superior end product.

Hope this lives up to the hype! Enjoy!

I love the potential of this prompt, but I’m real busy with work for the time being. I rolled a gnome, but only had time for a sketch - so let’s pretend I rolled the greyscale palette. ;)

So please enjoy my cracked-out, territorial gnome. They got shotguns and crack in DnD world, right? I look forward to doing a high-effort piece next challenge. :)

Title: "It ain't free, you bastard!".
Medium: digital, Paint Tool SAI 2.0.
Challenge Name: "Palette lockdown".
Choices: (14 - gnome), (4 - ardent BPD).
Description: during your adventure, you decide to take a nap in the middle of a strange forest. After waking up, a mystical gnome is waiting for you to pay for the damaged mushrooms that lay on the floor... but was it you the one who did it? You don't remember, but you better think fast! This tiny fella is growing impatient by the second!
Time Spent: maybe between 1 and 2 hours? I don't know.
Art Specific Critique: yes, however you want.
Permission For User Edits: you can use it.
Notes: wow, I also got the gnome! The most powerful creature. The palette I used was slightly altered, simply because the given colors were way too saturated, also, any color added is within a similar hue-range, just to give it a bit more of variety (like the purple of the boots, or the mushroom aura).

I'm just posting to remind myself I got 11 and 10 for my rolls. I dunno what a Kobold is but it looks neat.

This one fun.

Title: "Thou enchantment suck thou dong, thee armour now posseseth"
Medium: digital, Krita
Challenge Name: "Palette lockdown".
Choices: (5 - Foodie Booty), (18 - Enchanted Armor).
Description: While exploring the abandoned castle, you've stumbled across an armor that seem to be... floating in parts? as if there's something that keep them levitating in the air! Unfortunately for you, it is this kind of case, indeed. This armor was enchanted by aspired magician who, however, have done the prep work wrong and messed up with the spell casting, resulting in mean spirit possesing it, making armor, well, truly enchanted, but at what cost?
Time Spent: haven't counted, probably 4 hours again.
Art Specific Critique:
would be a surprise but a welcome one.
Permission For User Edits: No problem. Gu(n)t it however you want.
Notes: Kekw.

Very excited for this challenge, I love any excuse to get my dice out! One of my friends made a zine where he had a group of artists do a piece based on several dice rolls, determining the location, the creature, and some adjective we had to incorporate.
Mine was something like, a goblin, in the forest, with drugs.
It would be fun to do more dice challenges in the future

I will be very curious what you do with 11 and 10, because that's exactly what I rolled, lol.

>20 and 2
really going to need to find a way for this to work
I think I found out the issue with my drawing tablet, need to dedicate some time to it tomorrow and it should be fine again. Going to just count all the challenges I missed as "skips" because frankly if I devote myself to doing all of them I'll run and hide lol.

Might reroll the creature if I can't make a slime work? There's only so many things you can make a slime look like with those colors, and none of them are pleasant. Seriously. Red, white, yellow, brown. What a great selection of colors to use for a vaguely liquid-like entity, lol.

A goblin, but reptiloid. That is if we talk DnD-adjanced conventions.
From the reference guide I thought it looked like a Tonberry from Final Fantasy, so I might lean into that.

Whoops, just realized I forgot to post my submission for the first challenge. I will put it in spoilers as not to derail the current challenge.
Medium: Krita
Challenge Name: Technical Challenge: Line Work
Description: I tried to capture a chinese drawing/line art style.
Time Spent: 5-6 hours
Art Specific Critique: No
Permission For User Edits: Yes

Challenge 5:
Medium: Krita
Challenge Name: Palette Lockdown
Description: I rolled the extra dice for ammount and enemy/friendly. I got 1 creature and friendly. So it's a kiwi traveler who's taking a break to share a drink with a humble gnome.
Time Spent: 5 ish hours
Art Specific Critique: Yes. Whatever you want to say about it.
Permission For User Edits: Yes.
Challenge Feedback: I really liked this challenge! I will probably do this again for practice. I really liked that it was less lol-cow related. Since if I don't like the cow or am not familiar I am less likely to make art for that person. Also I would recommend avoiding grey scale palettes. I like that I could play with the color and layering them which isn't really possible with the grey scale palette. But that's just my opinion :). I also really like doing character/creature design. 10/10 stars!
Future Challenge Suggestion: I would love to see this challenge again!(maybe same palettes but dnd classes?) Or another roll dice challenge.

Edit: Does anyone know how to do thumbnails so they aren't blurry? It's kind of annoying that to see the details you have to click on the image.

rerolled the monster because I seriously have the brain of an infant I couldn't make anything decent out of that slime palette

I think I can work just fine with an imp

posting part of the sketch here to make myself commit to finishing the piece even though it got way out of hand

0 way I'm making the deadline but hopefully I can still post the finished product, it's going to be rather big

Gonna jump back in with this challenge, and also try my hand at a couple of the previous ones I missed. Glad this isn't a real D&D campaign, as my rolls for this were quite low, but I like the combo I got so sticking with them.

Title: Spoopy Archer
Medium: soft pastel
Challenge Name: "Palette lockdown".
Choices: Skeleton, Pastelli
Description: You turn the corner and encounter a gay, possibly disencorporeal bone boy and he is armed! Oh, and he has a bow.

I've never really tried to shade something with pastels before at all but it seemed like the most appropriate medium for this one.
Time Spent: 20ish minutes after doing the rough drawing on paper.
Art Specific Critique: Sure!
Permission For User Edits: Sure!
