The Kiwi Coloring Corner - Calling all creative kiwis! Join in a workshop made for those who seek to improve in the arts.

This is the first time I've used a pen in a while. I wanted to challenge myself since I tend to overthink and erase a lot. This took longer than I wanted plus some crumpled papers with deformed cats on them as casualties , but I'm happy with how it turned out.

Hey all, hope the drawing is going good. As some may or may not have seen in the community feature submissions, member @Cats has presumably passed away. At the end of the challenge, I will gather the ceiling cat submissions (only the ones involving cats), and integrate them into some kind of collage as a type of tribute/memorial for him. The submissions included will of course be credited in the post.

It will be posted on his profile page in the comments and maybe his "ask me nothing" thread at some point when it's ready. Those who don't want their works included, let me know in DMs. Thanks!

Requirements
1. You must use 3 or more different types of shading for the challenge.
2. The piece must contain both high contrast and low contrast, these features don't have to be side by side, anywhere on the challenge piece is fine.

3. The ceiling entity must have a shadow cast on the wall/ceiling.
I will eventually catch up with the rest of the challenges.

how do you get that static effect? i assume you are painting in photoshop
I use Clip Studio but there will be an equivalent option in Photoshop: look for a filter with 'Noise' in the name. Alternatively, you can google 'noise overlay' and take your pick from the results. Here's an example I found.
Noise Overlay Layer.webp
Put that in your image as its own layer, switch the layer type to 'Overlay' then reduce it to about 10-15% and you'll get the same effect.

Statue of Sneedery
Happy Canada Day for you Canucks and Early 4th of July for Americans! Since both days are so close together, might as well celebrate them at the same time.

Perspective
This challenge will go into the elements of perspective; bringing an image to life depending on the distance between the subject(s) and the viewer.

You will be tasked in making a structure, whether its a building (skyscrapers/towers/house/church/etc) or a statue (of a person/thing/animal) that immortalizes a level of patriotism as an homage to the west. For those on the outside, fear not! Make a work of any building you like the architecture of or at least one to dip your toes into drawing a structure or statue if buildings aren't your forte in drawing.

Vanishing points are merely points in a drawing where the details of a scene become so small they "disappear". The horizon line is typically what you see at eye level along the horizontal plane.

1 Point Perspective: The object has a single vanishing point where the distance is shown on the horizon line.
2 Point Perspective: The object has 2 points where the distance is stretched along the horizon line in both directions.
3 Point Perspective: The third point simulates whether the viewer is looking up or down on the object/scene. This means the vanishing point wont be on the horizon line but above/below it.

The further along you go in 4+ point perspective, the more complex the overall design will be. Video below shows some other ways to look at it.
Time is always your enemy when drawing, this is a simple strategy to expedite the process, and while its not perfect, it'll do the trick.

Some examples: Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Statue of Liberty, Church of Notre Dame, George Washington Statue.

Requirements
1. The work must have at least a 1 point perspective (1 vanishing point)
2. The work must be a structure.

3. If you end up deciding on making a statue, make sure it has a prominent base or pedestal that emphasizes a perspective even if the figure in the statue itself doesn't.

(It doesn't have to be real buildings/statues either, if you get inspired on making something farms related, just be sure it follows the perspective challenge)

AVOID: Drawing or mentioning your work being based off a structure/building that is local to yourself. Maintain a decent level of proximity for good opsec, just a suggestion of course.

Bonus points if you include any of the previous techniques thus far: shading/line work/contrast/etc

Announcement
One last thing, the Koloring Corner will be on a brief pause in the month of August, there will be a special event that will be hosted for artists looking to try their luck and make something interesting for a mystery recipient, akin to Secret Santa. A signup page will be posted here a week prior for those interested.

I might do a few more of these in the near future since perspective is something I've been wanting to work on, the more I look at this the wrong-er it looks. *yawn*

Putting the images next to each other I can really see where better construction would have benefited me, though in some spots Mario's big ass head was in the way. This would be worth redoing entirely for learning purposes.

I think the imperfections make it more charming and the colours are really nice; much warmer than the reference. There's a danger when you stick too close to your reference that things end up looking stiff.

Is this paint or markers btw?
This was done in alcohol markers! I do like how my colors turned out, I wanted to limit myself to just a few and not focus too much on copying the colors in the reference.

Tried my hand at the Papal Cross in Phoenix Park (Dublin, Ireland). I've been trying to paint it for days now. Figured I would throw up the sketch at the very least and post the painted version later (if I manage to finish it).

The path got so misaligned as fuck lmao.

Visited Ireland as a teen. Out of all the places we went, this park was among my favorites.

Requirements

2. The work must be a structure.

I'm not from the U.S. so here's a kiwi courthouse, where normal ridicule of cows, as well as typical legal troubles that the Ooperator occasionally goes through, occur.

NEW CHALLENGE!
Avatar - Beyond The Bounds*

Challenge Abstract
Pick any user avatar on the Farms and draw beyond its borders to create a new piece of artwork.

Detailed Description
Depending on your age, you may have played a game as a child where you and some friends fold a piece of paper and each take turns drawing on a designated section until at the end you have a connected drawing based on multiple different people's ideas. That's the basis for this challenge. Go find any user avatar on the forum and simply continue it to create as much or as little additional content as you like.

IMPORTANT: Despite me repeatedly saying 'draw' throughout this post you are allowed to approach this challenge however you want. Cut up a bunch of photos (real or digital) and frankenstein something together if you want, or make a clay golem then photoshop your avatar of choice onto it.

If you're still unclear on the concept I have prepared some extremely rough sketches to demonstrate the concept using probably the most famous avatar on the site:
Slobbermutt Null.webp
Firstly you could go with the most obvious choice of just drawing the rest of the dog:
Null Avatar Extend 1.webp
Or you could mix it up a little:
Null Avatar Extend 2.webp
Alternatively you could get freaky:
Null Avatar Extend 3.webp
While it may seem restrictive at first, I try to make my challenges as inclusive as possible --the good kind of inclusive not the trigger warning kind-- so you are welcome to approach this challenge in whatever way would bring you the most enjoyment.

I'm placing no hard rules on submissions but here are a few tips to consider:
  • The background of an avatar doesn't have to be incorporated unless it's integral to the overall image
  • Modifications to the avatar to fit your design are acceptable, but try to maintain the original as much as possible
  • If not working digitally it's acceptable to recreate an approximation of the avatar you want to use
  • When posting your submission include the original avatar and which user it belongs to, but don't directly tag (@) them because it's annoying
I know this challenge post is a bit sloppier than usual and I apologise. If you need any further assistance or clarification just ask. Myself (and hopefully other users) will be happy to help if you aren't sure about how to do something or need help cleaning up the avatar(s) you want to use.

Remember the thread was started in the spirit of sharing art skills and resources with your fellow Kiwis, on top of flexing your own abilities, so don't feel like all you can ever post is your challenge submissions.

*The challenge has absolutely nothing to do with Zone Of The Enders, I just really like that song
