The Kpop thread. - LEGGO

Anyone excited for Aespa debut tonight?
i just want them to give Exo some more attention first lmao, Red Velvet and Exo have some good vocals and they've pushed that aside in favour of chasing Lee Sooman's fever dream of this NCT thing lol
Every BTS release past idol has been terrible
agree, even "idol" was pushing it for me

TL;DR: I'm bitter because I've been brainwashed by Twice when I was still a teenager and seeing kpop being shaped kinda different now in a way people getting into it don't recognize my girlies makes me kinda sad tbh, I'm in denial of what could be or not a new gen. Thoughts?

Some Kpop companies are attempting to capture the foreign market. Loona is probably the most notable, but it's arguable if it was intentional from the start. Kim Lip and Odd Eye Circles explosion of popularity in the west seems fairly organic. Although their next release will be english, so you could say they are now explicitly targetting that market. K/DA and Aespa are other you could see as specifically global targetted groups. Unlike the Pan Asia "global" groups like Izone or Twice. Blackpink you could probably lump in with them. Jisoo still hasn't learnt english so you could argue Western interest seems more like a side gig to YG.

I think companies attempts will end up backfiring probably. People like Kpop because it delivers a style/business model that Western pop doesn't have. Pander too hard to the west and you dilute the essence that made it popular in the first place.

At the other end of the spectrum you have the niche idol groups, like AKB48 or HKT48 who explicitly rely on the small number of hardcore fans to drive their funding.

aespa debut song is the worst in sm history. literal noise
didn't even bother watching it lol. SM needs to quit trying to churn out more groups and focus on the good vocals they have

Yesterday it was announced EXO's Kai will be releasing a mini solo album on the 30th, not exactly what I had in mind for wishing they'd focus on their "powerhouse vocals" but hey I'll take it. It's supposed to be "R&B" I think so hopefully it will be like Baekhyun's "un village"

also naming the title song with a grunt is an interesting choice lol--

The fact that Kai's doing R&B isn't a surprise. It's the route nearly every male idol looking for international appeal is taking for their solo these days. Wonho did R&B for his solo debut, and BM is planning on going that way too, even though their groups are known for completely different styles of music (as if their fans were ever there for the music lmao)

The teaser video for Kai seems like SM splashed a lot of money on this.

I like how they dressed the girls somewhat modestly compared to what you can see in SK; even then, it wasn't enough to not get le stare of disapproval from the crowd. Thing is, they most probably would have been jailed if any of them were to cheer them on, kek.
>implying those northern gooks weren't creaming their shorts at the sight of Seulgi, formerly known as the ugliest and most hated tranny by some schizo on /kpg/.
