People complain about the abundance of cutscenes and political wanking in Metal Gear, but the difference is those scenes are also entirely skippable. Plus the gameplay itself can be enough to carry the experience if you choose to ignore the story. What does The Last of Us have if you ignore the story? A bog standard third person stealth-action game with occasional shooting. And even then, the story is omnipresent during gameplay with the ingame conversations with Ellie and the painfully slow walking scenes, and you can be damn well sure they're going to continue that trend with Part 2.I absolutely don't care about games having a larger societal message on purpose, so long as the game/Dev isn't bashing me over the head with it constantly and shoehorning it in at every opportunity. For example, the Metal Gear series developer, Hideo Kojima walked a thin line with this but managed to stay on the side of "gameplay comes first", generally keeping most of his preaching about governmental corruption and the military complex till after you've completed the game.
