The Last of Us Franchise - Because it's apparently a franchise now. This thread has been double-DMCA’d by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

With hindsight I want to say that the reason why the story doesn't work is because it relies on having sympathy for what I personally and many others see as a unsympathetic character.
Ignoring her physical characteristics, which is a miss for most here I guess, there is the problem that Abby doesn't seem justified in her actions by many. Sure, her dad got murdered while doing what he considered to be right, but who hasn't lost someone in the world of Last of Us? And the righteousness of his cause is completely subjective, most people think what they are doing is for good. So the loss of Abby's dad is supposed to be a tragedy, but it's just another to add to the pile in the end.
Then there's the fact that her life doesn't really seem that hard. She bears no physical scars, she has a Burger King Kid's club of comrades willing to trek the country side with her to find Joel and bash his head in. Her home has some of the best comforts in a world where modern society collapsed. Exactly what hardships are supposed to make us sympathize with this character? The evil cult she singlehandedly massacres? They made her so fucking strong that it becomes really fucking hard to sympathize with her. The relationships she have all seem sappy and cringe, not that any of the relationships in Last of Us 2 seem to really work, but in the end Abby has to compete with the relationship between Joel and Ellie from the first game that she demolishes with a golf club.

I don't sympathize with a character because the game tells me they're good. I wouldn't feel sympathy for Hercules as he pummels another monster into the ground. if they really wanted to make the player sympathize with Abby they had to make the character more tragic, more flawed, more hurt. I honestly think people would feel more sympathy for Abby if she actually was a deranged lunatic on a one woman's revenge quest for vengeance, and not a young adult with young adult relationship drama in between bashing in the skull of anyone named Joel.
They should have made her life after her father died a living hell, and her appearance and personality carry all the scars of a life having struggled on your own. Instead we got a Mary Sue like she hulk which the writer clearly like too much.

On top of all that, don't forget that there was nothing about Abby whatsoever before the leak that revealed the golf clubbing scene (and also the sex scene). Until that point, all anybody knew was the game was going to focus on Joel and Ellie, which people wanted given their bond was the highlight of the original game.

It sort of turned into an even worse version of the bait-and-switch MGS2 pulled but where MGS2 simply had some random new guy instead of Snake after the first level while Snake ran around as an NPC, TLOU2 literally has to force Joel to act extremely OOC (when the first game had a scene explicitly setting in stone why he would never do what he ends up doing), beat his head in with a golf club, and pretty much tries to hamfist a message of 'revenge is bad, m'kay?' when the actual events of the game tell a much different story where the bitch who got all her friends killed due to her stupid revenge lust survives crucifixation (which, y'know, killed Jesus) and gets away with her tranny sidekick, while Ellie just decides to not kill the one person she killed a ton of other people to get to in the first place and loses everything anyway.

Fucking lol:

How much of a financial disaster was TLoU2 that they have to rinse the original for sales again?
Read the full article, Sony sounds like a mess right now. Basically don't give a shit about your game unless it's a huge AAA monstrosity. Lots of devs getting shifted around and/or departing. Days Gone 2 apparently cancelled. New Uncharted game was getting made (possibly a remake?) but may have been scrapped. And this TLOU1 remake thing.

I really, really miss the previous Sony regime. *sigh*

And I wonder how ND will butcher TLOU1. I suspect they'll try and make Joel look way worse than he was originally to try and justify the shitshow in TLOU2.

Ehhhhhhh, according to the original article Here. It was actually back in 2018, and it wasn't originally their idea. Plus, I think this is more about making bank on new viewers from the tv show than anything relating to part 2. Like look at netflix’s witcher, successful tv show led to increase in witcher 3 sales, which equals more money.
