I'm not opposed to the idea that female characters don't have to be glamorous, boobzilla hotties in order to be appealing or compelling to the player. I'm actually quite fine with the way Senua looks and wouldn't even call her ugly. She's more or less a realistic-looking female character with a much smaller chest but still very much feminine with how she's modeled.
Female characters don't need big boobs in order to be engaging, nor do they need to be flawlessly beautiful. You can do a lot with variety in terms of how characters are modeled. Sometimes, grimy or grody is interesting given the context of the situation.

But what sets Abby and her tumblr-y ilk apart from a character like Senua is that she is designed with the sole purpose to eliminate conventional femininity in order to pander to MUH STRONG WAMAHN. Her design is a scientific anathema and it looks like Anita and ND went out of their way to make her as unappealing to look at as possible.

There's a difference between being a gamegate sjw and knowing that female characters can still be cool without having to look like a gross man or a scantily-clad damsel. Not every gamer goes into shit with the mindset of wanting to fuck the chick. Lots of players are looking for a personal experience and can empathize with female characters based on how they act or what their emotional plight is.
