An episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender has a plot and theme the same as this fucking game and despite being a children's show, it told a better and more mature story. I single fucking 23 minute episode did a better job with this subject than a 25+ hour game. I'm just tired of the concept of people trying to be "deep" because if you have to try in order to say something profound then you're already doing it wrong, interesting people write interesting stories by writing out what they actually think and feel. All of the "deepest" shit I've ever watched or read has come off as extremely genuine and from the heart of somebody who was compelled to write what they wrote by life experiences or a need to express themselves, not critical acclaim, money or asspats from journos. That is where people like Cuckman and David Cage fail. You don't try and be an "artist", you just are.

Profound is going into Nier Automata expecting a flashy anime game with gothic lolita/shota robots and coming out of it shook at its philosophical depth. And it still didn't take itself so seriously that it couldn't include giant fighting robots.

If you write a story jerking yourself off about what a deep genius you are the entire time it tends to show.

'you have to play it to judge it' applies to games that are focussed on actual gameplay, not narrative driven dramas that are mostly about watching extended cutscenes

I wrote 6 pages of why it was bad. I don't need to play it. I only need to watch the story beats. I play games for story, and TLOU 2 is very much a story driven game.

There's too little gameplay to make up for the terrible story. You don't need to play something to judge it.
