The Lighthouse - And I'm never, never sick at sea

Just got out:

I fucking love it, I'm going back and forth between this and Parasite as my movie of the year.

Even by A24 horror standards, this felt more like a psychodrama than a horror movie, but it's also funny as fuck at times. If you're a fan of stuff like Bergman and Tarkovsky, then you'll love this.

Pattinson and Dafoe are fucking phenomenal, and if they aren't nominated for anything, then I'm fucking rioting.

See this as soon as you can.

This movie was incredible. I loved basically everything about it: the visuals, the acting (especially Dafoe, I really enjoyed basically everything about his character), and even the comedy. I absolutely did not expect the amount of dark comedy in this movie. My favorite moviegoing experience this year, probably my favorite movie I've seen in theaters since Sicario.

It was an excellent movie, as long as you don't mind having no goddamn clue what's going on. There are no reliable narrators in the movie, so it could arguably fall anywhere between 'it was all a dream' and 'it was completely literal and everything happened'. And yeah, Dafoe and Pattinson were both perfect.

Finally saw this a couple nights ago. Alone. At one in the morning. Only a guinea pig to keep me company.

My eyes were as wide as saucers the whole time. I don’t even know what I expected. It was phenomenal. I think my pig liked it too.

Anyone else notice the Prometheus connection at the end?

Also thank you, Robert Eggers, for finally figuring out merginas.

Saw this a few nights ago. I wish I hadn't had so much of it spoiled for me beforehand through trailers and random internet comments, but it was great. At least as good as The Witch, which is high praise. Eggers can fuck off with his woke opinions, but he's a great writer/director, and I'll watch anything he creates. (Aside: I'm glad he didn't go with the planned shot of the lighthouse juxtaposed with Pattinson's erect penis.)

Also, keep in mind when you watch this modern masterpiece that it and The Witch were both made for $4 million each, and they both look better than most massive blockbusters. Imagine that! Focus on storytelling, on getting great performances from great actors, on inventive cinematography (in other words, on creating art), and you don't need hundreds of millions.

Anyone else notice the Prometheus connection at the end?

Yes, thankfully. Without that little bit of meaning I don't know how I would have felt about the ending.

The only film I've ever seen alone in my own home and still felt like I ought to give it a standing ovation. Every single frame, if paused, is worthy of a painting. My favourite of 2019 if not truly one of my favorites of all time.

Fun facts: The name Thomas means 'twin' and Winslow means 'burial mound'

Minor rant on the state of film that I will spoiler when I'm on a PC:
It pisses me off that some dangerhair out there will find The Lighthouse problematic because it stars two white men and the only female thing is a masturbatory aid. I didn't see Rise of Skywalker, Charlie's Angel's, the new Terminator or Little Women. I'm so embarrassed that everything feminine can't stop screeching about how woke and deserving of praise it is, and it's expected that women should want it. The last time a femalecentric film made me feel remotely 'empowered' instead of patronized was fucking Suspiria.

I just watched it and I have the same feeling that Eraserhead gave me when I first saw it. Nausea, dread, confusion, delight, like I saw something I shouldn't have seen. Pattinson and Dafoe were spectacular--they're both such recognizable actors but they felt so unfamiliar throughout. The Oscars are a joke, I know, but it's genuinely a travesty that it didn't get more nominations.

The only complaint(?) I have is that the mermaid's pussy kind of looked like claspers which only male sharks and rays have, but I wasn't wearing my glasses when I watched it, so I couldn't see all the details.
