Infected The Linux Community - Operating systems are serious business

I'm cringing here just by knowing there's at least a few folk who've written the word linuxfag or that the OS is a total failure from their precious Android phones. Also who wants to bet the Farms itself is running on a Linux VM?

Linus himself can be pretty lolsie from time to time but he's only worthy as a cow if you think rants about code commenting style are fun, which no noob ever thought. Also if he is a cow he's the polar opposite of OPL since he's arguably one the most successful people in the world or even the.

Finally: this thread absolutely needs a funny "what operating system are you using" pool.

Also people have this weird idea that the majority of people choose their OS. 99% of people just use the one that came preinstalled on their prebuilt machine. If Linux ever starts getting preinstalls then people will start using it as a desktop OS.

I'm running Linux because I'm cheap and don't want to contribute to bill gates.

It takes about as much effort and technical knowledge to install Linux, as does a pirated windows.

Almost anything, other than just installing it, takes more effort to do in Linux. Some people who have struggled to get a feature to work, because of their own ineptness, are elated with their own cleverness when it finally does work.

In short, all those fags crowing about being superior because Linux aren't.

Phone Wars are actually proving to be worse than Desktop OS wars. Jesus Christ anyone catch salt of that Samsung phone exploding?

Speaking as an IT professional: You can't really live without Windows, although it's getting easier with mobile operating systems like Android. I use Linux on the desktop and it's really much better than it was five years ago but it's still not for grandma's or your girlfriend's computer, you really do need to know what you're doing.

It's much better designed and fine-tuned. Windows 10 runs literally hundreds of maintenance services to maintain the illusion that it isn't encumbered by legacy cruft; ever wonder why your CPU is ALWAYS 100%? That being said, performance isn't everything as we don't live in an ideal world. For user-friendliness on a standard desktop PC, Windows beats all competitors.

Oh because grandpa and grandma are so fucking comfortable using Windows?! Dude I know young people who have trouble understanding the simplest basics of computers, what the fuck you're taking about?!

At this point the only reason people think of Windows as simpler is the fact they already built their skills using it. Most people use the computer for two things: browsing and gaming. For 90% of people this means using the exact same programs on any OS- their favorite browser and Steam. Also office stuff but if Libre Office comes installed it should be pretty straightforward to use, just like learning to use a new Office version whenever they change the interface layout.

Both of you, stop sperging.

Wine is kind of shit and still has many issues running a lot of things from my experience. Plus isn't wine just a sort of virtual box of sorts? Why uninstall windows and install linux only to just use a virtual windows?

I can see why maybe back in the day when using computers itself was sort of niche and you could easily get into most programs via linux/virtual boxes but now I don't see the point in using something other than what literally every program is designed to work on unless it's for something very specific (like servers or other programming things) or your computer is shit running windows/OSX and you need something light to make simple web browsing faster.

Mst Linux users only use it to feel special and cool honestly.

Wine isn't so much a virtual machine as it's a Linux substitute for running actual Windows, rerouting specific Windows file requirements to Linux friendly equivalents so Windows programs can run without needing Windows.

Unlike a virtual machine, which is running an entire operating system in a window and is a massive drain on resources, Wine acts as Windows to Linux translator so Linux burns far less power to run programs without needing to run another operating system in a window to do it.

If you are a gamer yet prefer Linux, I can definitely see the draw in using it if you don't want to have to deal with Windows all the time to play a game, not to mention there is a cap on resources in a virtual machine so not all games can run well, so doing so via Wine cracks the throttles open so this can be avoided.

Of course, using Wine is still an implicit admission you need to rely on Windows based software, since Wine tries to use native Windows DLLs whenever it can to supplement it's own generic substitutes, and sometimes has no choice to make certain applications run.

There are some vendors who sell pre-installed Linux PCs.

But anyway, why is there an edition of Linux called, among all things, Fedora??!

Does this come with a special pre-installed streaming app for MLP and a Browser add-on which automatically posts "lol jesus suxx" to forums with keywords like "religion", "god", "Jesus", etc. in them??

Fedora is the spinoff of the Red Hat distro. Red Hat is a more professional distro, whereas Fedora is the "general user" version, as Red Hat is more tailored for business use.

The thing is, no one really cares about the desktop pc market these days.
Everything is either mobile or embedded, and almost every device (router, tablet, phone, smart-home devices and servers that run the back-end to every "cloud" service) is running on some sort of linux kernel.

Richard Stallman's ideas are great intellectually, but he is about the worst possible figurehead for them, being an obese white male autist with a neckbeard and pretty much the stereotype internet-troll.

People don't care what drives their device, as long as it works.
