Infected The Linux Community - Operating systems are serious business

-he has whole slew of terms he deems problematic: http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/words-to-avoid.html

I went to the website and was presented with the German version, where I found this gem (Copied the English version).

“PC”
It's OK to use the abbreviation “PC” to refer to a certain kind of computer hardware, but please don't use it with the implication that the computer is running Microsoft Windows. If you install GNU/Linux on the same computer, it is still a PC.

The term “WC” has been suggested for a computer running Windows.

Well in Germany the term "WC" is already in wide use. It means toilet.

I always find it amusing that nowadays IBM compatibles are referred to as "Wintel" (Windows+Intel) -- just change a little letter and you get "Windel", which in Krauteese means "diaper".

No one's bothered to add the whole sarah sharp incident and the SJWs who tried to take over the Linux Foundation so I'll quote a post from KIA:

LOL I remember the Sarah Sharp incident. When it happened I thought "wow, you really were shielded from every development team you've ever worked on, weren't you?"

I think it's pretty funny that the primary reason SJW's couldn't take over the Linux Foundation is because none of them have the technical expertise that a qualified kernel developer and project manager would. Then they tried to punch down at the gaming industry, failed, and had to settle for gaming "journalists"

IIRC correctly she works/worked at Intel and they have that whole diversity thing going on so it really begins to line up and make sense why she thought she could bend the project to her rule, Intel being the largest non-Linus contributor.

Funny, in plumber's jargon a WC is a water closet which is a toilet
Exactly. In German the word "Klosett" (short "Klo") is derived from this. Checking Wikipedia I notice that "Null-Null" is also another synonym. Strange didn't knew that before. But I think "Donnerbalken" (roughly "thunder beam") is funnier.

But back to topic, I think this fixation with people using the right terms screems control-freak all over it. It's a pity when a community is all stuck up because what newcomer right in der mind would ever want to join?

And being completly against GUIs is stupid squared. Of course, if you have learned for years on end how to use an command line interface you can do things fast - but the new user has it incredebly hard to become accustomed, because CLI's need constant remembering of stuff, while a GUI just needs recognition. I think the GUI and integration of deictic principles has lead to the widespread use of computers that we have now today and that's why Linux fails: it makes stuff unessessary hard to use. Most people don't want to spend an hour learning to install a programm. They want to make three clicks wait for a few minutes and then be done.

Any elitist Linux users who obsessively look down on Windows and Mac users for "not being as smart as them" are probably annoying to deal with.

Powerlevelling a bit here, but I studied computer programming in college and now work in IT. So many people, students and instructors alike have a sense of superiority about what OS they use. As someone who grew up on early Windows, used Knoppix in high school, OS X for a few years in university, and Ubuntu's command line in college. I don't understand how it can be part of your identity. All have some good features. All have some annoying traits.

I've never really been the best at command line outside of the courses I took on Linux, but I obviously understand what an important skill it is to have. I can't help notice some people in IT really love to circlejerk about their preferences and their choices in software.

Don't get me wrong, if you love an OS or piece of software, it's OK to be excited about it and show it to your friends/colleges, but I really can't stand this "My OS is better than your PLEB OS" mentality. It's very reminiscent of the "My Dad could totally beat up your Dad!" argument you hear from children.

*gazes into the abyss* Holy frijoles, I had NO idea about any of this. O_o

I use Linux on my laptop because it's what I'm used to and these days, I don't need anything else. Somehow, though, I'm not very surprised there's a mass of lolcowosity in the community. My sole experience of Linux users en masse has been going "What the fuck are these guys talking about?" when trying to solve a problem. User-friendly it is not; I'd find a complete answer to my question, but the answer would be loaded with terms and procedures I didn't understand in the slightest, so I'd have to Google each one on down the line until I managed to get the For Dummies explanation. And half the time the answer wouldn't work anyway because different distros, different setups, etc.

Also, some of these guys can't just let a thing rest unmodded.

Good god, and I thought Macfreaks were bad.

Wait, did he just say he was going to speak Spanish?

Spanish? I guess that explains why he came to our University then. From what I heard when he realized he signed a raspberry pi from one of the participants, he wanted to erase the signature  .

So yeah, what a exceptional invidual.

This is how you install an app in crossover.

EDIT: Thread derailed due to :autism:.

Why set up a dumb emulation of a bad OS just to run shit on it? (I like CrossOver and actually have a subscription but it's a stopgap at best.)

Why not just compile the Unix application yourself?

https://www.macports.org/

Seriously, you can actually compile most worthwhile Unix applications directly on anything running OS X. As opposed to the fucking nightmare of trying to do the same on any Windows piece of shit.

This is the problem SJWs have in tech. If they ever try to take over anything, it will not be long at all before people get pissed off because SHIT ISN'T WORKING.

So from reading this thread, what I'm getting is that Stallman and the people surrounding him are kind of like if you combined a crippling autistic programmer with a sovereign citizen?

Stallman is actually autistic. I don't even think I'm going out on a limb saying that.

He's also an absolute god and while we can't live up to his fucked up paladin neckbeard ideals, we should remain aware of them.

I'm not sure if he still does this, but he used to refuse to even have passwords on all his accounts, so rms was his account name and rms was his password, and you could just log into his shit and see what he was doing.

He was forced to stop doing that, but that is how serious he was and is about his philosophy.

I personally like Linux and use Mint on my laptop, which also happens to be my only computer at the moment. I mainly use it because, for some odd reason, it seems to run TF2 and CS:GO a lot better than Windows. I'm also a huge Valve fanboy and those are pretty much the only games I play, so the fact that Linux can't run too many titles natively never really bothered me.

Those guys who constantly go on and on about privacy and everything being a botnet are weird. I call em the /g/ types because that's where they like to congregate the most, while also fapping to their godking Stallman and shitty animu.

If you want to find a sore topic to discuss with any Linux user, bring up systemd and Red Hat's role in the creation of most of the user programs for Linux. They'll either worship their Gods from Raleigh, or (more likely) decry them as the most evil thing to happen to the community since Satan himself. A lot of this reactionary backlash also congregates around projects like cat-v and suckless. Anyway, here was their rallying page from a year and a half ago.
