As for it being bloated. I just checked the RAM usage on my system. It is using about 400MB of memory.
This website is currently using 350 MB in this tab, according to Brave.

Bloat as in features, I don't want my game launcher to ship with a web browser for example. I like Linux for the Unix philosophy, I am very much of that mindset. It sounds like we are just completely different users so what you enjoy, I hate.
I don't even have a steam account anymore, I use GOG because I can just download the installer and run the game exactly the way I want to. For somebody like me Steam is everything I wanted to escape on Windows.
They do a great service for us all with Proton though, I credit them that.

Lutris ships with an embedded webkit browser, much like Steam ships with embedded Chromium.
Lutris probably has a comparable feature list to Steam.

No, not at all. What you and many others don't understand is that I've learned to pick my battles and not obsess over a load of stuff that doesn't really matter too much.

What I care about is "Do I control my PC, or does some corpo control it?" Steam doesn't take any control away from what I do on my PC.

For somebody like me Steam is everything I wanted to escape on Windows.

It is a digital shopfront, I suppose. However, for the most part, it isn't intrusive. I think any comparisons are a stretch.

The only reason we have decent gaming on Linux is because they started pushing it. I've gamed on Linux in the ancient past, and it was a PITA.

I don't know what made you say this, we clearly are different users. That is fine, I wasn't judging you for liking Steam. I for one do care and will pick my battles for how I like to play games. It is okay to like different things.

UWP was a good idea, the only reason why it died was that Microsoft made four mobile OSs in a row that were incompatible with each other and by the fourth one developers just gave up and stopped supporting it.

I would argue developers were quickly being demotivated by Windows Phone 8 as Android had the app gap situation sorted out pretty early into its development history, Microsoft just assumed the enterprise mindset is what made Android and iOS become insanely popular.
